KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Priority Care Pediatrics in Kansas City requires its patients to follow the CDC immunization schedule. With the recent measles outbreak in the Kansas City area, the office made a post on Facebook to educate parents and reaction was swift.Dr. Raymond Cattaneo said that post, "Turned into something much bigger than that when some anti-vaccine people got a hold of that and bombarded our post. Reading comment after comment after comment you just kind of get worn down because you know you're fighting the good fight. You're on the right side of science but you worry that what they're saying, people will actually believe."Kristen Kleffner is a mom of four who got a letter from her son's school."We've done everything we can on our end but that doesn't necessarily mean they're still safe," Kleffner said. "You hear about measles outbreaks but you don't realize it's going to hit so close to home."Cattaneo told Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City, "Measles is one of the most contagious illnesses out there. It's a scary thing, especially when we know we have an immunization that can prevent this from happening."He added that it doesn't take many people for an outbreak to turn into an epidemic."The science is clear, this is about saving kids lives," Cattaneo said. 1301

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –- For two parents, welcoming three bundles of joy into the world last week was a one-in-a-million feeling. Statistically speaking, that’s not too far off. Identical triplets were born at Truman Medical Center Thursday to Nicole and Caleb Choge. Baby boys Ron, Elkanah, and Abishai were born just minutes apart and six weeks premature. By Sunday, the brothers were doing well under observation in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. According to doctors, it’s not uncommon for multiple births to come prematurely. What is uncommon is identical triplets. According to a study in the Journal of Biosocial Science, identical triplets occur only about 20 to 30 times per 1 million births. While the boys’ mother rested, new father Caleb Choge spoke with reporters Sunday. The couple, who have a 2-year-old son, was expecting another baby but were surprised when they saw the sonogram. “My wife and I and our son prayed for another child,” he said. “And then, I like to say, God answered everybody’s prayer: one, two and three.”Until recently, the couple lived in Kenya, Caleb Choge’s home country. They moved back to the Kansas City area to be closer to Nicole Choge’s family.   1253

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Virginia Merritt always wanted to be a mom. “We were like, okay, we’re going to be married for a year, enjoy being newlyweds and then right at a year stopping birth control,” she said, looking at her husband, Dustin Merritt, with a glint in her eye.Virginia and Dusty started “trying” right around their one-year anniversary, exactly as they’d planned. Except, things didn’t go as planned.“Those first few months we knew it was early. Probably the three-month mark is when we were like...hmm, what’s going on,” she said.It seemed like all their friends were having babies. Several members of their family were having babies. They were happy for those announcing births and celebrating babies, but that happiness was muted. They found themselves staying home more. They were sad. They wanted so badly to be parents. 845

John Boehner is heading for the boardroom of a cannabis company, the former Speaker of the House announced Wednesday."I'm joining the board of #AcreageHoldings because my thinking on cannabis has evolved," the Ohio Republican tweeted. " I'm convinced de-scheduling the drug is needed so we can do research, help our veterans, and reverse the opioid epidemic ravaging our communities."Boehner, who served as Speaker from 2011 until his resignation from Congress in 2015, was appointed to the board of advisers at Acreage Holdings, a multi-state cannabis business that aims to "make cannabis available to any patient who can benefit from safe and reliable access."His decision to join the board is a marked shift -- in 2009, Boehner said he was "unalterably opposed" to legalization, according to Bloomberg.Former Republican Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld is also joining the board. The two said in a joint statement that they believe "the time has come for serious consideration of a shift in federal marijuana policy," specifically citing the drug's use by veterans "to self-treat PTSD, chronic pain and other ailments.""While the Tenth Amendment has allowed much to occur at the state level, there are still many negative implications of the Federal policy to schedule cannabis as a Class 1 drug: most notably the lack of research, the ambiguity around financial services and the refusal of the VA to offer it as an alternative to the harmful opioids that are ravishing our communities," they wrote. The Republican politicians' appointments to the cannabis company come as the current Republican administration has cracked down on state-level marijuana regulations. In January, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded a trio of memos from the Obama administration that had adopted a policy of non-interference with marijuana-friendly state laws. The move essentially shifts federal policy from the hands-off approach adopted under the previous administration to unleashing federal prosecutors across the country to decide individually how to prioritize resources to crack down on pot possession, distribution and cultivation of the drug in states where it is legal.  2177
