SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade surplus was approximately 84 billion U.S. dollars from Jan. to July, down 20 percent year on year, and the year 2010 is expected to see a small trade surplus, said Commerce Minister Chen Deming on Tuesday.Chen made the projection at the ongoing World Investment Forum that runs from Sept. 7 to 9 in southeast China's coastal city of Xiamen.China has seen a trade surplus in recent years, but with a decreasing margin, and the trade surplus takes up a very small proportion of the GDP, noted Chen."China's foreign trade policy aims to stabilize exports and increase imports, which can boost China's economy and also bring positive impacts to neighboring countries," said Chen.Customs statistics show that China's import and export value in the first seven months reached 1,617 billion U.S. dollars, with exports worth 850.5 billion U.S. dollars, up 35.6 percent, and imports at 766.6 billion U.S. dollars, up by 47.2 percent.China's trade surplus in 2009 was more than 190 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.4 percent from the 290 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.The World Investment Forum is the global meeting on investment and development issues organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. KHARTOUM, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Ahmed Karti said on Friday his visit to China carried reassurances and confirmations to the Chinese side his government keenness to enhance cooperation with China even after a referendum to be held in southern Sudan."We have delivered a message on our keenness on continuation in enhancing the cooperation with China and expanding its investments in the country, particularly in north Sudan," Karti told reporters at Khartoum airport today upon return from a tour that included China and Egypt."China is an important country for Sudan and we are keen to fully coordinate with it, particularly with regard to current international issues. BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Xie Yun, a 24-year-old new graduate, felt excited when he opened the door of the 50-square-meter apartment he rented in Changzhou city of east China's Jiangsu Province.Starting work in a computer company in July, Xie is one of the lucky few who enjoyed lower rents offered as part of the local government's affordable housing program. He pays 4.5 yuan per square meter for one month, around 10 percent of his monthly income.Also, the apartment is equipped with an air conditioner, a TV set and automatic drying racks."I'm quite satisfied, and I prefer to rent such an apartment rather than buy one," said Xie.Xie's home is one of 133 small-sized public-rent apartments purchased by the Changzhou government and rented to low-income families and the newly employed. Monthly rents varied from 3.5 yuan to 4.5 yuan per square meter, about 30 percent of the average price in Changzhou.In the city's southern section, migrant workers pay even lower costs."I only need to pay one yuan per day for renting a bed in the dormitory-like apartment, sharing a balcony and a toilet with eight people," said Chen Ling, an 18-year-old worker in an electronic firm in Changzhou.The 260,000-square-meter residential community provides 5,000 migrant workers with basic living facilities, including a supermarket, shopping mall, bank, Internet bar and dining hall.The Changzhou government has so far built as well as bought 10,500 units of public-rent housing, and offered 11,400 units of low-rent homes to migrant workers.
