WINDHOEK, March 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday arrived in Windhoek to kick off his official visit to the southwestern African nation of Namibia.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top advisory body, was making the visit at the invitation of the National Council of Namibia.Namibia was the second leg of Jia's 10-day African tour which already took him to Cameroon. BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce Tuesday made a cautious prediction for the outlook of the nation's foreign trade for the rest of the year amid the fragile global economic recovery.The rebound of China's overseas shipments in the first quarter can largely be attributed to the low comparison base of the same period last year, the commerce ministry report said.Moreover, uncertainty in the global market remains as high unemployment in European Union nations and low capacity-utilization in the United States may dampen consumption and investment, the report said.China is facing deteriorating trade conditions as trade protectionism is on the rise, the report added.China suffered 19 trade-remedy investigations in the first quarter, up 93.5 percent over the same time last year. The investigations, targeting Chinese products, involved trade worth 1.19 billion U.S. dollars, the report said.The report also said higher costs may squeeze domestic enterprises' profits as a result of raw material price hikes and rising labor costs.China's exports increased 28.7 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2010 after dipping 16 percent last year amid the global economic downturn, customs data showed.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- China's trade volume will reach 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by the year 2020, Li Gang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce, said Sunday.Li made the remakes at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair, held in the southern city of Guangzhou.According to Li, China's merchandise imports and exports will hit 4.3 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total.Imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total.Weighed down by the global financial crisis, the nation's foreign trade recorded a 13.9 percent year-on-year decline to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars in 2009, with merchandise exports of 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars and imports of 1 trillion U.S. dollars.In the first quarter, foreign trade began to grow again, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.

JI'NAN, March 31(Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator has called for greater efforts to promote women's awareness and ability to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, made the remarks during a week-long inspection tour of the eastern Shandong Province ending Wednesday.Chen was sent by the top legislature to inspect how local law enforcement agencies implemented the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women.The law, which took effect on Dec. 1, 2005, had played an important role in protecting women's legitimate rights, raising their social status and mobilized them in the country's modernization drive in an active and innovative manner, she said.She called for more efforts to publicize the law to make people aware of the law's significance in protecting women's rights.Chen, also chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, said Chinese women faced challenges such as discrimination and a lack of labor rights.
