SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Blood Bank asked Friday for the public to donate blood over Memorial Day weekend to make sure local patients have an adequate supply.Summer can be difficult for blood centers to meet supply needs due to donors taking vacations and schools being out of session.“We’re asking our community to keep our blood supply at a safe level by donating as individuals, or hosting blood drives through local businesses, churches and schools,” said San Diego Blood Bank CEO, David Wellis. “There is no substitute for blood – donations are needed now.”   Most San Diego Blood Bank collection centers will be open Memorial Day weekend and there are perks for donors.San Diego Padres: Donate at any SDBB donor center or mobile drive between May 24 and June 4 and receive a voucher for two tickets to a future Padres game.USS Midway: Those who participate in the museum’s blood drive will receive free entrance on May 28.Just My Ticket: Attendees will receive one free ticket to the San Diego County Fair when they sign up for the Just My Ticket e-mail service between May 25 and May 31.Next Tuesday, May 29, San Diego County Credit Union will host blood drives at six local branches from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. 1243

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week, a massive Mola mola fish stunned whale watchers in San Diego. The fish is a unique sight, appearing to look like a giant fish head with fins. It's also known as the sunfish. Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, says they specialize in giving people once in a lifetime encounters. "Whenever I give my opening spiel, I tell them I'll show them anything that moves," said Biagini.RELATED: Thar she blows! Where to whale watch in San Diego — by land or seaOn this trip, the massive Mola mola stole the show.Biagini says while mola is common here, they're usually 2 to 3 feet long in our waters. He believes the one they spotted was 7 to 8 feet. "When we came across this specific one, we were kind of blown away by the sheer magnitude of it," said Biagini.Biagini happened to have divers on his boat that day, who told him mola is one of the prized fish to swim with. RELATED: Video: Rare blue whale with calf spotted off San Diego coast"Because I had a boat full of freedivers and scuba divers, it was like we hit the lottery, it was my equivalent of finding killer whales, apparently!"A lot is unknown about the fish, but the females can release 300 million eggs. And while usually spotted drifting in the water and basking in the sun, researchers recently discovered they're actually strong swimmers.Mola mola can grow as large as 14 feet by 10 feet. 1418

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo Thursday called for action against recent moves aimed at weakening the Endangered Species Act.Monday, the Trump Administration moved to lessen protections established in the act. The moves effectively end blanket protections for animals newly classified as threatened and now allow economic cost to be taken into account when deciding whether a species must be protected."We are concerned that the changes to the Endangered Species Act will make it more difficult for us to protect species across the world for future generations," San Diego Zoo tweeted. "We have a rich diversity of unique species, many of whom find refuge in San Diego county. The proposed changes will reduce the protections that these species currently have, & limit the ability of wildlife officials to protect their homes & provide for long-term recovery."RELATED: Birth of rhino marks major milestone to save critically endangered speciesDuring a public comment period, the zoo submitted their support for the act to the government. The zoo pointed to its works increasing California condor, giant panda, and the Hawaiian Puaiohi populations. In the letter, the zoo objected to the deletion of the phrase "without reference to possible economic or other impacts of such determination" from the act and advocated that such determinations of a species must be made "solely on biological factors.""Presenting cost-benefit analyses would serve no purpose other than to undermine the statutory requirement for using best available science—which is precisely why Congress acted to explicitly prohibit economic considerations in this Section, while allowing such considerations when designating critical habitat," the zoo argued. 1749
