SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 74-year-old man reportedly hit a bicyclist with his truck in La Mesa Tuesday before leaving the scene thinking he simply hit a curb, police say. According to police, the crash happened on the 7000 block of University Avenue at 4:19 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the 74-year-old was driving his 1994 GMC pick-up truck when he turned right onto Harbinson Avenue and struck the 21-year-old bicyclist. Police say the cyclist was in a designated bicycle lane. The man kept driving, thinking he hit a curb, according to authorities. “When contacted by the police the driver of the pick-up truck was shocked to learn that he had hit a bicyclist and cooperated fully with the investigation,” La Mesa Police said in a news release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A coffee shop owner in City Heights has planted a handful of coffee trees in his garden. He plans to be at the forefront of the "small-batch coffee" movement growing across San Diego."I'm learning more and more about coffee, and it's just becoming way more intriguing to me, and it's fascinating," says Justin Boone, the owner of Burly and the Bean.Boone says he planted his first tree about 18 months ago, after talking to friends about the idea. He got more interested as he heard of local farms planting the trees in large quantities."I guess it's a little risky," says Boone, "because I really don't know what the outcome is going to be."Boone says his trees won't produce enough beans to harvest for another 2-3 years. But he's excited to taste the first cup from his crop.Meanwhile, coffee is becoming a trendy new crop across the County.Frinj Coffee currently manages around a dozen farms in San Diego that have planted coffee trees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 36 students reportedly felt sick at a Bay Terraces elementary school due to possible construction-related fumes, according to the San Diego Fire Department.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to Zamorano Fine Arts Academy around 10:30 a.m. following the reports of students feeling ill. Crews said the kids complained of not feeling well and were being held in the school's cafeteria.An ambulance brought one child to a nearby hospital, SDFD said. Around 11:45 a.m. SDFD began releasing students who were being held in the cafeteria. A nearby construction site was in the process of pouring resin when the smell caused some children to start feeling sick, according to San Diego Unified School District. The resin is non-toxic, but fire crews were called to check out the students. 835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A couple of thieves hosted an unintentional comedy act after surveillance cameras captured them making a huge mess inside a Normal Heights salon. Salon Bordeaux is reaching a big milestone."We are getting ready to celebrate our 14th anniversary here on Adams Avenue," salon co-owner, Laura Price said. But Price in not quite ready to celebrate. "Somebody threw a rock through a window and climbed through," Price said. Just before 2:30 a.m. Friday, their surveillance cameras caught two people attempting a smash-and-grab at the salon. One of the men threw a rock through the side window and climbed through. The two headed straight to the counter. They pried open the cash drawer with a crowbar and took off. But not before one of them tripped over and broke the side table. He then realized he forgot his crowbar, so he climbed back in to get it, and hurried off.But Price said the joke's on them. "Fortunately, we do not keep any cash in the salon overnight, so they didn't get much, except for hopefully some injury from the glass," Price joked. This isn't their first break-in. Almost four years ago to the day, Salon Bordeaux was one of 15 small businesses in Normal Heights to be a victim of burglary. Back then, criminals got away with ,000, their client appointment book, and computer."We learned a lot from the first incident, and this time we were ready," Price said. Since then, they installed multiple security cameras. They never leave cash overnight and instilled new safety practices. So this time, the clumsy thieves made off with nothing. "We just want to spread the word and make sure that other businesses are as prepared as we were this time. It could've been a lot worse. None of the staff was hurt, and really, all we have to do is deal with the glass and replacing it," Price said. San Diego Police has not made any arrests at this time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A brazen package theft — and attempt to stop it — was caught on surveillance video at a Pacific Beach home.Penny Ryan wasn't home when the scene on her porch unfolded, but it was all captured on her doorbell camera. A man walked up to the residence with a small green skateboard and bag before he lays down the board and walks up onto the porch. The man then begins stuffing his bag with packages left on the doorstep.But before he gets away, a concerned nearby resident comes across the man as he's leaving and tells him to put the bag down multiple times.MAP: Track crime in San Diego County neighborhoodsThe thief appears to be willing to put the bag down, telling the resident, "I'll put it down, sir. Sir, I'll put it down." But instead, the man runs away.Ryan said the incident highlights a rise in crime within Pacific Beach, and residents are worried. A look at CrimeMapping.com shows there have been about 30 thefts and burglaries in the Pacific Beach area in the past six months."It has escalated so much in the last 3 years that we are all quite worried about how bad it’s going to get," Ryan said.
