CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - The first woman on the West Coast to graduate from the Howitzer Section Chief course is stationed at Camp Pendleton.The Howitzer is the largest land gun in the Marine Corps. As the section chief, Corporal Julianna Yakovac is in charge of the unit firing the gun.Yakovac broke the glass ceiling in February, graduating on Valentine's Day. Just a few days before that she turned 21. "She's the right person, in the right place, at the right time for this job," Lt. Col. Kenneth del Mazo, Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 11th Marines at Camp Pendleton, said she's the best fit for the job.RELATED: Marines hold largest exercise in Camp Pendleton history"She has earned her position 100 percent," he said he wouldn't send anyone through the course, which he added was a notoriously difficult course, unless they were ready.The Marine Corps opened up ground combat positions to women in 2016.Yakovac didn't even know it was a newly available position for her.Once she graduated, she was thrilled to meet her unit and get to work, saying it's important to be prepared. She was contacted by a recruiter while she was on vacation with her family. Originally, she said, she was thinking about college but was excited about the opportunity to serve.Her parents are thrilled with her achievements, "they're ecstatic, they have more Marine Corps stuff in their house than I do," she said laughing. Only one other woman holds the same title, according to the Marine Corps.After her service, Yakovac wants to go back to school, "I would probably study medicine, maybe become a nurse or nurse practitioner."She said her brothers and sisters in arms have only held her up throughout her career. 2109

Charges have been filed against a California Highway Patrol officer in the Bakersfield area.According to a District Attorney, Brian Pardue is being charged for allegedly attempting to commit a sexual offense against a minor.Pardue's offical charges are a felony, for attempting to contact a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense. And a misdemeanor for arranging a meeting with a person believed to be a minor intending to commit a sexual offense.The incident is believed to have happened on July 3, 2020, and involved digital communications with an undercover law enforcement officer pretending to be an underage minor. CANARSIE, Brooklyn — This past weekend has been excruciating for a Brooklyn woman who was the victim of a heartless robbery.Anaika Forbes' 13-year-old shih tzu pekingese was swiped from her parked car. The brazen theft happened Saturday at about 3:45 p.m. on Avenue N near Canarsie Road in Canarsie, where the vehicle was parked.Forbes, who lives in a basement apartment on Avenue N, was overwhelmed that day dealing with flooding in her unit due to afternoon showers.“I was just going back and forth to the car bringing my stuff out, it was raining and just so much was happening,” she told PIX11.Her dog, Taffy, was placed in the unlocked car during the shuffle.When Forbes stepped back into her home to grab a few more things, an unknown woman snatched Taffy, Forbes said.In surveillance footage obtained by Forbes taken from across the street, a woman is seen opening the passenger car door of Forbes' dark-colored car, grabbing the dog and nonchalantly walking away with her by the leash.“She’s not a barking dog. (KGTV) -- Customers of the Campo Group Water System are being advised that the county has issued a drinking water warning after samples found increased levels of nitrates.Sample results found that on September 2, 2020, nitrate levels exceeded the maximum contaminant level for safe drinking water.The group serves a mini mart, gasoline station, and an office, according to the county.Nitrates in drinking water are a health concern for infants less than six-months-old and pregnant women are advised not to consume the water.“Boiling, freezing, filtering, or letting water stand does not reduce the nitrate level,” the county said.The Campo Group Water System is providing bottled water until nitrate levels fall below the maximum contaminant level, the county said. 788

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — A motorcyclist was killed on Friday after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a building in Carlsbad.Carlsbad Police say the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Faraday Ave. just after 3 p.m., when for unknown reasons he lost control and collided into a building.Officers arrived to find the motorcyclist unconscious. The rider, identified as a 29-year-old male from Encinitas, died at the scene.Police don't believe any other vehicles were involved and said it doesn't appear alcohol was a factor. It's unclear how fast the rider was traveling at the time of the crash.The area of Faraday Ave. and Orion Way was partially closed for the investigation but has since reopened. 728
