SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In an effort to help San Diego's homeless population, the City of San Diego is proposing a third storage facility the homeless can use to store their belongings. The city organized a town hall in July to gather input for the facility that would be placed on 54th and Lea Street.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, the facilities provide a "safe place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness to keep their belongings as they look for work, attend classes, or meet with a service provider or doctor."One of the centers, located on the 200 block of 16th Street, provides bins for more than 400 homeless individuals. Although the centers provide a service to San Diego's homeless population, some residents have made their opposition clear. Before one of the facilities opened in Sherman Heights, residents voiced their concerns. Neighbors told 10News they worried the facility would increase illegal activity and pose safety concerns in the area. To address concerns, security was placed inside the building as well as patrols sent out into the neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections.In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags.It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Leaders from Mexico and San Diego led a conference on the effort to end human trafficking Tuesday at Liberty Station. Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, who recently took over as Mexico's Consul General in San Diego, was the first speaker, followed by San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan.An estimate by the United Nations reveals that millions of people are living in modern day slavery worldwide. In San Diego, the most common form of human trafficking is for sexual exploitation. The District Attorney's office told 10News that between 3,000 and 7,000 women are sex trafficked through the county each year, with the average age of the victim's being just 16.RELATED: Two teens arrested in San Diego for possible sex trafficking of 12-year-old girl"We have to watch the borders, but we also have to watch in the privacy of the bedrooms of our kids," Stephan said during an interview with 10News.The forum came just a few days after 18 Camp Pendleton Marines and one Navy sailor were arrested, accused of taking part in human trafficking and drug smuggling from Mexico. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kelvin Barrios, a candidate for the San Diego City Council's 9th District, has announced he has contracted coronavirus."After being hospitalized two days ago, I have tested positive for COVID-19," Barrios said in a Facebook post. "While I have been following all social distancing and self-isolation recommendations, I had what I thought was a normal flu for about a week," he said.Barrios described feeling "bad body aches, sweating, headaches, labored breathing, high blood pressure, and an elevated heart rate.""I strongly urge everyone to practice social distancing and stay safe and healthy during these times," he said. 652

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many doctors across San Diego County have seen a recent surge in positive COVID-19 cases. Five hundred one new cases were reported Thursday.But, most people don’t require hospitalization and can isolate at home.“We just do video visits with patients and talk to them about their symptoms,” said Dr. Michele Ritter, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health and an associate professor of medicine.“At the end of April, May, we were getting maybe four or five new referrals a day to be seen, and then it went up to about 40 a day.”Ritter is also the medical director of the COVID-19 clinic. She said many of her patients live with other people.“There are times there are three of four generations of a family living in a house together and sometimes very close quarters, so that’s a challenge,” she explained.If someone in your household has COVID-19 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends they stay in a separate room and use a different bathroom if possible, avoid contact with other members of the household and pets, don’t share personal household items, and wear a cloth face covering when around others“The absolute ideal situation is your own room, your own bathroom. Not everybody has that, we have patients who live in two-bedroom apartments with six other people and a single bathroom.,” said Ritter.While isolation is critical, Ritter said if you must use a shared space, like a bathroom, it’s essential to disinfect after every use. That includes using a shower, toilet, or sink.“When you’re done if you’re able to have something like a Clorox wipe, or a washcloth with some Clorox bleach on it wipe down the surfaces that you’ve used and wash your hands,” she said. “In terms of laundering clothing, it’s probably fine to launder them together if you’re using high temperatures to wash your clothes.”She said to wash all dishes and utensils used by someone with COVID-19 in hot water and soap or run them through a dishwasher.“A lot of patients have their family members bring meals to them and set it outside their door so they can eat,” she said.Another challenge is parents who test positive for COVID-19 and have mild symptoms, but still, have to take care of their kids.“I find that most parents do well wearing a mask; the kids get used to it,” she said. “You can still be around your kids; just do the best you can.”Ritter said many of her patients have been able to keep the virus from spreading to their loved ones at home by following simple steps.“Wearing masks, washing hands, cleaning frequently touched surfaces is the best you can do,” she said. “We don’t always have perfect situations, so we do the best we can with what we have.” 2720
