Children and the elderly may be good at spreading the coronavirus among their age groups, and young adults may be the primary source of community spread, or “super spreading,” according to a new study.The study, published Wednesday, involved the coronavirus testing results of a large contract tracing effort in two states in India. Researchers had results from more than half a million people from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh regions traced after more than 80,000 primary, or index, positive cases.They found that only 8 percent of index cases accounted for 60 percent of new infections. And that about 70 percent of infected people did not infect any of their contacts."That's a hugely disproportionate effect. Superspreading has been suspected, but not really documented,” study leader Ramanan Laxminarayan of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy in New Delhi, and also of Princeton University, told CNN.“The greatest proportion of test-positive contacts within most age groups were exposed to index cases ages 20-44 years,” researchers found.While that age group resulted in the highest rate of secondary cases, children under 15 also had high rates of secondary spread among their own age group.During the time period researchers looked at, roughly March through August, schools were closed and there were still high rates of coronavirus recorded among children."While the role of children in transmission has been debated, we identify high prevalence of infection among children who were contacts of cases around their own age," the team wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.The data was collected thanks to rigorous surveillance and contact tracing measures.“Procedures include syndromic surveillance and (COVID-19) testing for all individuals seeking care for severe acute respiratory illness or influenza-like illness at healthcare facilities; delineation of 5km “containment zones” surrounding cases for daily house-to-house surveillance to identify individuals with symptoms; and daily follow-up of all contacts of laboratory-confirmed or suspect COVID-19 cases, with the aim of testing these individuals 5-14 days after their contact with a primary case, irrespective of symptoms, to identify onward transmission,” the study lays out. 2292

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Laurence and Cherryl Lector's two small children were eager to show off their costumes and hit up their neighborhood for sweets. But the couple didn't want to abandon their home on Baywood Circle in Chula Vista and disappoint the several trick-or-treaters likely to stop by for confectionery.So, the couple filled a large candy bowl hoping their security camera -- fixed visibly in their porch -- would keep visitors honest.  The family then set off on their haunts.The Lectors phones were buzzing with video alerts showing little ghosts and ghouls digging through the self-serve candy bowl and respecting the Halloween honor system.Then they received a video showing an esurient group of older kids, and one small girl, emptying out the dish into their bags."I was devastated someone could just get all the candy and ruin the night [for other trick-or-treaters]," said Laurence Lector.One of the kids noticed the camera and even pointed it out to someone else in the group, but the kids continued to snatch all of the treats until every sweet was gone."We were disappointed that those that came afterward came to an empty bowl," Cherryl Castro-Lector told said.About an hour later, they received a video from their camera that warmed their hearts.The video shows a girl and boy investigating the empty bowl.  They must've known that the night wasn't over for other little trick-or-treaters. So, the group took turns emptying their own their treats into the bowl, starting with their mom."I got a little teary eyed.  Gosh, I hope my kids are like that someday," Castro-Lector said. "I would have hugged those little kids and mom if I were there."The Lectors are eager to find these children and their parents to say thanks.  "I would love to meet them and thank them for being so kind. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. (KGTV) — An upset truck owner is making a plea for tips after a man was recorded dousing his Toyota Tacoma with a destructive substance.On Falcon Peak Street in Otay Ranch, Marc Galvez stumbled upon a very odd sight when he went to his truck Monday night: A liquid he thought was a milkshake. "When I hosed it down, I could see the paint coming down. Just before 10 p.m., a man with "USA" written on the back of his shirt was recorded walking in the driveway, before walking away. Police took a look and told him it was likely car paint thinner. Galvez is insured.
