LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area was 12% contained but experienced a "flare up" due to extreme heat Friday afternoon after already scorching 11,637 acres, destroying five structures and threatening more over the last three days."There is a bit of a flare up this afternoon, but we don't really have a ton of information of where that is yet because it's going on right now," a U.S. Forest Service official told City News Service late Friday afternoon.Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, additional evacuations were ordered for the Fairmont area east of Lancaster, where residents were told to evacuate from north of Avenue D/Highway 138, south of Avenue A, west of 150th Street West and east of 200th Street West, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Palmdale Station."Fire will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon, Quail Lake, Three Points, Historic Ridge Route and Inventoried Roadless Areas, fire officials said during a late-morning update Friday. "Spotting and aggressive fire behavior will continue."Fanning the flames is this weekend's heat wave, with firefighters braced for dangerously hot weather that will make battling the fire more difficult. The focus for crews on Friday was "fire suppression, air operations, evacuations as needed and structure defense operations ... line construction where possible," officials said.No injuries have been reported, but at least five structures have been destroyed and further damage assessments were being conducted. The fire was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to the U. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.Mandatory evacuations have been in effect for the area east of Ridge Route Road, west of Lake Hughes Road, north of Pine Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road, and south of state Route 138, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Ron Shaffer of the Palmdale Station. There are more than 100 structures in the evacuation area, including primary residences and outbuildings, in the communities of Lake Hughes and Pine Canyon, officials said.Evacuation centers were set up for displaced residents at Highland High School in Palmdale and the Castaic Sports Complex."In this evacuation, unfortunately because of COVID protocols, a shelter is not actually established, people will have to stay in their cars," Shaffer said earlier. People staying in their cars at a center are allowed to have small animals with them.Animal boarding was made available at Castaic Animal Care Center, Lancaster Animal Care Center, Palmdale Animal Care Center and the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, according to the American Red Cross Los Angeles.San Francisquito Canyon Road has been closed from Stater Lane to Spunky Canyon, as well as Three Points Road from State Route 138 to Pine Canyon.A closure order is limiting public access to Cottonwood, Spunky Canyon, and Sawmill-Liebre campgrounds and, a small section of the Pacific Crest Trail for the safety of firefighters, forest officials said.More than 1,500 firefighters, along with three helicopters, five water tenders, and 173 engines, were assigned to the firefighting effort. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 3923

Lawmakers in West Virginia did something Monday night that might be a first in American history: impeach an entire state Supreme Court. The West Virginia House of Delegates' impeachment of the justices on the state's Supreme Court of Appeals is an unprecedented move spurred by an escalating scandal in the state's judicial system. But West Virginia Democrats charge it's just a ploy by Republicans to put more conservative judges on the bench in the state's highest court. The court's justices -- Chief Justice Margaret Workman and Justices Allen Loughry, Robin Davis and Elizabeth Walker -- are accused of failing to carry out the court's administrative duties and wasteful spending during office renovations. They were impeached on 11 articles of impeachment, dealing with wasteful spending, maladministration, incompetency, neglect of duty and potential criminal behavior, according to a press release from state House Speaker Pro Tempore John Overington. 964

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Dencil Gold, a father of three from Las Vegas, has never been into sports, let alone the game of hockey. But this year, all that changed.“It’s like the perfect storm in a perfect community,” Gold said, “and everybody loves it.”He’s describing the hockey fever surrounding the Las Vegas Golden Knights. From the oversized Knights jersey draped over the Statue of Liberty replica outside the ‘New York, New York’ hotel and casino, to the well wishes on the marquees, to the giant-sized chocolate sculpture of star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, hockey is the talk of the town. The Las Vegas Golden Knights are an NHL expansion team; it’s in its inaugural year, and few expected them to do well. Vegas Sports Book locations had their odds at clinching the Stanley Cup at 500-to-1.That was months ago. Now, they’re just one round away from the finals.“This is really special,” Gold said as he looks out over a packed house on a recent Thursday morning to watch the team practice. But it’s not even about their enormous and almost unrivaled success as a first year team. The Knights' very first home game ever took place just nine days after, and just down the street, from one of the most horrific mass shootings the country has ever seen. The city was in mourning. What this team represents is hope in the face of evil.“We were hurting as a community, and [these team members] were hurting as people,” Gold said. “All of a sudden none of that mattered. We were all in this together.”He can point to the exact moment he became a fan of the Golden Knights. It was during the opening ceremony at that first game, when emotions were still raw. The Knights put together a tribute to the 58 people who lost their lives, and the players, often considered heroes in their own right, escorted the “everyday heroes” of that fateful night, doctors, nurses, and first responders, out onto the ice.“It was a very moving and touching moment,” Gold said. “It was just like ‘Oh my God, this is really special.’”Golden Knights’ defenseman Deryk Engelland then skated to the center of the rink and took the microphone.“To the families and friends of the victims,” Engelland said, “know that we’ll do everything we can to help you and our city heal.”The crowd erupted into cheers before his closing line.“We are Vegas strong,” said Engelland.“The city was just trying to find a way to come together,” said mom of two Melanie Samaniego. “I think it brought something positive into the city in a time of mourning when people were really feeling low and sad and kind of lost.”Samaniego was also watching the Knights practice on this weekday morning, and admitted that, as Gold has done, she too has taken her kids out of school to be at these practices.“This doesn’t happen every day,” she said,  smiling. “I’ve never seen this kind of reaction to any team brought into this city.”Her daughter has even started playing hockey, mimicking the moves of the standout goalie. In the locker room after practice, Fleury, asked whether he thinks their success is helping people heal after an unthinkable tragedy, he demurred but said that if their games can help take people’s minds off something horrible even for “a few nights a week” and cheer for their home team, then “we did a little bit of good for the community.”Samaniego, beaming from ear to ear, summed it up with one sentence.“I don’t think anything more positive could have come out of this.”Chris Welch is a national correspondent for The E.W. LA MESA, Calif. (CNS) - Three people armed with handguns shot at a business and a vehicle in La Mesa, but no one was struck by the gunfire, police said Wednesday. The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday on El Cajon Boulevard just west of Parks Avenue, La Mesa police Lt. Brian Stoney said. The target of the shooting was an occupied business in a strip mall, Stoney said. The business' front window was shattered by the gunfire. The lieutenant did not disclose the name of the business."This appears to be an isolated incident," Stoney said Tuesday. "And although the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous, we do not believe there is any further threat in this immediate area right now."At least four men were inside the business when officer arrived, but were uninjured, the lieutenant said, adding that the men were detained for questioning.Officers spotted a vehicle driving away from the business with several bullet holes in its windshield, he said. Officers stopped the vehicle and also detained its two occupants, both men, for questioning.Witnesses told police they saw three people armed with handguns open fire on the business and the vehicle before fleeing in a vehicle, described only as a dark SUV, Stoney said. The suspect vehicle was last seen heading westbound on El Cajon Boulevard. No description of the suspects was immediately available and a motive for the shooting remains unclear.Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call La Mesa police at 619-667-1400. 1522
