CHICAGO, Ill. – A 9-year-old boy held his own Black Lives Matter protest in his front yard over the weekend to inspire others to support racial justice.Katya Kelley told WLS that a neighbor encouraged families living in their Chicago neighborhood to draw hearts in their driveways in solidarity with the protests over George Floyd’s death. So, her son Aiden grabbed a bucket of chalk and got to work. The boy covered the sidewalk in front of his home in drawings of things like hearts, flags and hands embracing. However, Aiden wanted to make his message more direct after learning more about the Black Lives Matter movement, so he decided to make a sign to walk around with.Aiden told WLS that he just wanted to support everyone and make sure they felt happy, because of the events of the past few weeks. Katya said she was taken aback by her son's enthusiasm to help bring about change.A neighbor ended up snapping a photo of Aiden and posted it to Twitter, where it's been liked and retweeted thousands of times. 1021

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after reportedly assaulting two Border Patrol agents as they attempted to arrest him for trying to smuggle people into the U.S. According to the agency, the incident happened around 1:17 a.m. Tuesday as agents patrolled Interstate 8 in Campo. Agents tried to stop a 2007 Ford F-350 near Kitchen Creek Road when the driver took off, leading agents on a high-speed chase. RELATED: 14-year-old tried to smuggle meth strapped to body, CBP saysAccording to Border Patrol, agents successfully deployed a tire deflation device, forcing the vehicle to stop a short distance later, but the driver got out and fled on foot. As agents searched for man, he reportedly jumped out of a nearby bush, tackling one of the officers to the ground. A second agent also responded to the scene, struggling with the suspect as well. Inside the F-350, agents found three men and one woman, all Mexican nationals in the U.S. illegally. They were all taken to a Border Patrol station for processing and the suspect, identified as a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested. RELATED: Woman tries to smuggle meth with 7-year-old in car, Border Patrol says“The Border Patrol like any Law Enforcement job is inherently dangerous. The Border Patrol is comprised of a highly trained / multi-disciplined work force. Our agents are trained and equipped to properly confront any situation they may encounter in the field,” said San Diego Sector Acting Division Chief Patricia McGurk-Daniel. “The ambush and assault of our agents will not be tolerated and this case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in order to protect our workforce and the community.” 1684

CARMEL — The pastor of a Catholic church in Carmel, Indiana, is facing scrutiny after he compared Black Lives Matter demonstrators to "maggots and parasites" in a since-deleted post on the church's website.Bishop Timothy L. Doherty of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana said Father Theodore Rothrock of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church should issue a clarification of the post Rothrock wrote Sunday in a weekly message. The group Carmel Against Racial Injustice called on Doherty to remove Rothrock from his position."The only lives that matter are their own and the only power they seek is their own," Rothrock wrote. "They are wolves in wolves clothing, masked thieves and bandits, seeking only to devour the life of the poor and profit from the fear of others. They are maggots and parasites at best, feeding off the isolation of addiction and broken families, and offering to replace any current frustration and anxiety with more misery and greater resentment."Rothrock continued, writing that, "We must stand in solidarity with our brethren across the world to oppose this malevolent force."He also questioned if Frederick Douglass and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would have marched in today's demonstrations and criticized the removal of monuments."Black Lives Matter, Antifa, and the other nefarious acolytes of their persuasion are not the friends or allies we have been led to believe," Rothrock wrote. "They are serpents in the garden, seeking only to uproot and replant a new species of human made in the likeness of men and not in the image of God. Their poison is more toxic than any pandemic we have endured."The post has been deleted from the church's website, however, an archive of the message was captured on the Internet Archive.Doherty said in a written post on the website of the Diocese of Lafayette-of-Indiana that he expects Rothrock to explain his message."I neither approved nor previewed that article," Doherty said. "Pastors do not submit bulletin articles or homilies to my offices before they are delivered. I expect Father Rothrock to issue a clarification about his intended message. I have not known him to depart from Church teaching in matters of doctrine and social justice."The group Carmel Against Racial Injustice called on Doherty to remove Rothrock as a priest and require training and education for priests and deacons on systemic racism and diversity. They also invited parishioners of the church, members of the community and other religious leaders to denounce Rothrock's statements."Carmel Against Racial Injustice is disgusted and shocked by the recent letter written by Father Theodore Rothrock," the group said in a statement. "We are also deeply saddened by the fact that the church leadership did not condemn the statement and saw fit to allow its publication. Silence is the action of being complicit in injustice."The group plans to gather from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Sunday on the sidewalk surrounding the church to peacefully protest Rothrock's statement.Rothrock has not yet responded to WRTV's request for comment. This story was originally published by Daniel Bradley at WRTV. 3138

CANARSIE, Brooklyn — This past weekend has been excruciating for a Brooklyn woman who was the victim of a heartless robbery.Anaika Forbes' 13-year-old shih tzu pekingese was swiped from her parked car. The brazen theft happened Saturday at about 3:45 p.m. on Avenue N near Canarsie Road in Canarsie, where the vehicle was parked.Forbes, who lives in a basement apartment on Avenue N, was overwhelmed that day dealing with flooding in her unit due to afternoon showers.“I was just going back and forth to the car bringing my stuff out, it was raining and just so much was happening,” she told PIX11.Her dog, Taffy, was placed in the unlocked car during the shuffle. When Forbes stepped back into her home to grab a few more things, an unknown woman snatched Taffy, Forbes said.In surveillance footage obtained by Forbes taken from across the street, a woman is seen opening the passenger car door of Forbes' dark-colored car, grabbing the dog and nonchalantly walking away with her by the leash.“She’s not a barking dog. She’s super sweet; she would go with anyone,” a tearful Forbes said. “I just want her back.”Forbes, who canvassed the neighborhood all day and night on Saturday and for a good part of Sunday, has launched an online campaign to get Taffy back, even offering a 0 reward for her return.“Please return Taffy, no questions asked,” she said in a plea to the unidentified woman. “She is my everything, I’ve had her since she was 3 months old.” 1466
