(KGTV) - A 10News viewer has a warning for pedestrians who cross a busy Del Mar intersection.There’s a warning for people walking across Camino Del Mar at 9th St., but no warning for drivers.Victoria Arthur says she was almost struck by a car twice while out for a walk.“The first time I wasn’t scared at all. You push the button, the white light comes on, and I’m crossing. I wasn’t even thinking anything about it until I was almost hit by the car,” Arthur said.The City told 10News it is illegal to drive through a crosswalk that contains pedestrians. Del Mar’s traffic engineer and traffic committee evaluate the situations and look for improvements in traffic signs, signals and controls, city officials said. 738

DESCANSO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County couple is warning others after getting a flat tire from an unusual source. Pamela Jessup was running errands last Thursday morning when she says she started hearing a thumping noise while driving her Toyota RAV4 on SR-79 near Old Highway 80.Jessup says it was then that she pulled over and looked at her back tire. After not seeing anything wrong, she went on her way.The thumping, however, only intensified after she drove onto Interstate 8. When she drove home, Jessup says her husband Davis found a temporary lane marker stuck, nailed in to the tire.While doing their due diligence, the Descanso residents found dozens of temporary nail markers along the side of the road in the same area Jessup ran into issues.A local tire shop was able to fix the damage to the tire, but it cost the pair . Other residents in the area took to social media to complain similar events that happened to them in the same area.On Facebook, at least three others said they also got flat tires after driving through the area.From Tuesday through Friday, neighbors reported a road construction project that included restriping.On 10News at 5, we follow David Jessup as he makes the journey to the Caltrans subcontractor for answers and to give them back their lane markers. 1313

Despite not meeting the original requirement of playing a minimum of six games this season, the Big Ten voted to allow Ohio State to participate in the Big Ten Championship Game for December 19.The No. 4-ranked Buckeyes were slated to play their sixth game of the year on Saturday against archrival Michigan, but a coronavirus outbreak prompted the Wolverines to cancel their matchup against OSU. The cancelation was announced on Tuesday.The move leaves No. 12 Indiana out of the title game. The Buckeyes previously defeated Indiana, giving the Hoosiers their lone loss of the season.“The decision was based on a competitive analysis which determined that Ohio State would have advanced to the Big Ten Football Championship Game based on its undefeated record and head-to-head victory over Indiana regardless of a win or loss against Michigan,” the Big Ten said in a statement.Ohio State is slated to take on No. 14 Northwestern in the title game.A huge factor likely came down to Ohio State’s chances of making the coveted four-team College Football Playoff. Democratic lawmakers are calling for Congress to rein in Big Tech, possibly forcing Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple to sever their dominant platforms from their other lines of business and imposing new uniformity on the terms they offer users. The proposals in a report issued Tuesday follow an investigation by a House Judiciary Committee panel into the companies’ market dominance. Those kinds of forced breakups through a legislative overhaul would be a radical step for Congress to take toward a powerful industry that has come under intensifying scrutiny over issues of competition, consumer privacy and hate speech."To put it simply, companies that once were scrappy, underdog startups that challenged the status quo have become the kinds of monopolies we last saw in the era of oil barons and railroad tycoons," the committee's report reads. "Although these firms have delivered clear benefits to society, the dominance of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google has come at a price. These firms typically run the marketplace while also competing in it—a position that enables them to write one set of rules for others, while they play by another, or to engage in a form of their own private quasi regulation that is unaccountable to anyone but themselves." 1271

(KGTV) - This weekend 47 teams from high schools around San Diego and other parts of the US will compete in the FIRST California Robotics Regional Championships.The event brings the teens together to test their engineering and science skills. The teams get six weeks to design and build a robot to complete a handful of tasks.But the technology isn't cheap, so many teams turn to local tech companies for donations.San Diego based tech-giant Qualcomm is the title sponsor of the competition. They also give money to individual teams. Organizers say the companies see it as a way to excite teens about careers in STEM."They look at this as their future workforce," says Regional Director David Berggren. "If we can get these kids invested in STEM fields now, they're going to be great future employees, and it's money well spent for the company."The actual dollar amounts aren't given, but some schools say companies donate thousands of dollars each year. Logos on t-shirts and team booths show companies like Apple, Qualcomm, Viasat, 3M, Solar Turbines, BAE Systems, leidos and more have made donations.In addition to the money, companies donate time, providing volunteers to mentor the teens through the design and building process. They work hands on with the teams, giving kids an up close look at careers in STEM fields."It's eye-opening, it's surreal," says Southwest High School Senior Alejandro Gendrop. "To not only have someone aid us with how we're supposed to organize our team, put it together, but also to get a view into the industry and how they work and how similar our work is to theirs, it's great."The competition in Del Mar is Friday and Saturday, and admission is free.
