BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Wednesday pledged to cement legislative ties.The pledge came out of talks in Beijing between Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok.In his opening remarks, Wu said the meeting was his third with Choe this year.The first meeting took place when DPRK leader Kim Jong Il visited China in May. Choe was then a part of Kim's entourage.Wu and Choe then met on the sidelines of an international parliamentary leaders' meeting in Geneva in July."Three meetings in one year reflects our special relationship," Wu said, adding that he expects Choe's visit to boost bilateral relations and ties between the two nations' legislatures.Saying China and DPRK are good neighbors, Wu noted that China-DPRK relations have withstood the tests of changes in the international arena.China-DPRK relations have witnessed significant progress this year, Wu said, citing DPRK leader Kim Jong Il's two visits to China during which Chinese President Hu and Kim reached a number of important agreements.Wu said it is the unswerving principle of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to cement and develop friendly ties with the DPRK.China hopes to work with the DPRK to carry out the consensus of their leaders while maintaining high-level exchanges and stepping up strategic consultation, Wu said.Choe hailed China's remarkable achievements of the reform and opening-up and China's modernization drive, expressing hope the Chinese people will make further progress in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.On legislative ties, Wu said the NPC and the SPA play crucial roles in their countries' politics.The NPC hopes to work closely with the SPA on state governance and legal system building while boosting communication and consultation on international and regional parliamentary organizations, Wu said.Choe began a five-day visit to China Tuesday. After spending time in Beijing, he will travel to northeast China's Jilin Province.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed Monday that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government will wage the fight against corruption with greater determination and more forceful measures as the situation remains "grave".Addressing a plenary session of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's anti-graft body, Hu said all work should be done with the fundamental interests of the majority of the people as the core concern.Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said problems that seriously violated the public interest and sparked the most public complaints should be addressed to ensure social justice.He said efforts were needed to strengthen ties between the Party and the people and to enable the people to play a more active role in fighting corruption.Hu pledged to "combat graft strictly and punish corrupt officials severely" so as to win trust from the people.Hu admitted that prominent problems remained in the fight against corruption and efforts to build a clean government, and warned of a "grave situation and arduous tasks."He called for enhanced supervision and monitoring of the implementation of major central government and Party policies and measures and the promotion of a corruption-free work style among officials.He called for reinforced efforts to build a system to prevent and punish corruption."More efforts should be made to investigate graft in key industries and key posts," he said, stressing the supervision of procedures concerning the promotion of local officials to prevent abuse of power or other corrupt conduct.Figures from the CCDI show 146,517 officials across China were punished for disciplinary violations last year, including 5,098 leaders at the county head level or above and 804 officials who were referred for prosecution.Discipline inspection bodies received almost 1.43 million petitions and tip-offs last year and recovered 8.97 billion yuan (1.35 billion U.S. dollars) in economic losses for the state."All comrades in the Party must serve the people with all their hearts and use their power to seek benefits for them. During her visit, China and Germany issued the second communique in two countries' history, which was considered a historical event by both sides.The Sino-German relations have entered a new phase, Merkel said. HANGZHOU, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun on Tuesday applauded the contributions that Chinese literary writers and authors had made to enriching people's lives and called on them to create more works that are true to life and close to people.Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a congratulatory letter that was sent to the organizing committee of the fifth Lu Xun Literature Prize, one of China's most prestigious honors.The award ceremony was held in east China's Shaoxing City, the hometown of Lu Xun (1881-1936), one of China's most well-known contemporary authors and essayist, on Tuesday night.Named after Lu, the prize was first awarded in 1986.Writers of outstanding short- to middle-length novels, poems, prose, essays, reportage, literary reviews and theoretical works will receive the award, which is bestowed every two years.
