SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters on alert after seeing the latest Wildland Fire Potential Outlook maps released by the National Interagency Fire Center. The maps show San Diego with an above average wildfire potential that increases from June through August and starts to wane slightly in September.Cal Fire Public Information Officer Thomas Shoots said the outlook focuses on three things; "We're dealing with fuel, weather and topography." Shoots said the agency can't do anything about the topography or weather, but every neighbor can do their part reducing fuel, especially around their home.RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeShoots acknowledged the winter weather gave San Diego County a reprieve fire-wise, but it posed a new problem: new growth that's already drying out."A grass fire can run a lot faster and spread faster which means our resources are spread out quicker, and then that means it has the heat and momentum to build up to the bigger fuels," Shoots said.Just down the road, a neighbor had landscapers pruning her yard."I think it's very important to have this done...helps the whole neighborhood," said the woman named Gene.Cal Fire said the best time to get the landscaping work done is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.Last week, neighbors in Rancho Santa Fe saw the danger become a reality when Cal Fire said a landscaping crew using the lawn mower sparked a 3-acre fire near Fairbanks Ranch."It's starting to get to the point where it's too late; we need you to clear while we have the chance," Shoots said, referring to hot weather making these incidents more likely."We need all the help we can get," he said."Definitely, they've got a lot of work ahead of them, I think," Gene said.Cal Fire reported this year to June 16th, there have been 1,386 fires, burning 11,954 acres across the state. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Federal indictments were unsealed Thursday charging 75 people nationwide, 40 in San Diego, with involvement in an international money-laundering scheme.Prosecutors said those charged have been involved with crimes ranging from drug distribution to money laundering.Investigators seized more than million, 95 kilograms of methamphetamine, 63 kilograms of heroin, 10 kilograms of fentanyl, 92 kilograms of cocaine, 252 kilograms of marijuana, and 20 firearms, including semiautomatic assault rifles and handguns.RELATED: Ex-MLB pitcher Esteban Loaiza now faces federal drug charge"We have siphoned the cash and the life out of a San Diego-based international money laundering organization with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel," U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said. "By following the money, we have discovered large quantities of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine that are no longer destined for the streets of America."According to the indictments, Jose Roberto Lopez-Albarran, described as a "significant" broker for a Mexican-based international money laundering group, laundered tens of millions of dollars in drug money from the U.S. to Mexico between 2015 and 2018.Lopez-Albarran, who was arrested in San Diego on Feb. 9 and remains in custody, reportedly oversaw a network of co-conspirators to assist in transferring the millions to drug suppliers across the border, including individuals working for the Sinaloa Cartel.RELATED: Alleged drug dealer charged in Camp Pendleton Marine's overdose death"Taking on and stopping transnational criminal organizations requires dedication and sacrifice," District Attorney Summer Stephan said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From across the country to here in San Diego, there is no denying racial tensions between law enforcement and some communities. Locally, San Diego County has seen protests over officer-involved shootings and deaths of people in police custody. The 2016 shooting of Ugandan immigrant Alfred Olango sparked protests throughout El Cajon. Olango’s sister called 911 to report that her brother was displaying erratic behavior. Olango pulled something out of his pocket officers believed was a gun and, according to police, he assumed “what appeared to be a shooting stance.” Officer Richard Gonsalves fired his gun at least four times, killing Olango. Earlier this year, a jury in a separate civil suit found the officer acted reasonably.In National City, the death of Earl McNeil in 2018 sparked questions from his family and protests at city council meetings. McNeil, who had mental illness, went to the National City Police station seeking help, according to his family. Police said when he went to the station, he was making paranoid, threatening and irrational statements. Police say he told them he was in possession of a controlled substance. A statement from National City police said he was transported to County Jail for processing and exhibited signs of medical distress. According to his family, he suffered brain and nerve damage that led to his placement in a coma. He was pronounced dead June 11, 2018.Bishop Cornelius Bowser is a former gang member who grew up in San Diego. “I was up to no good every day,” he said. He turned his life around and is now a local activist, vocal about what he calls inequities in policing. That includes overpolicing, with more negative than positive interactions.“What I mean by being overpoliced is that the community is saturated with law enforcement. They’re looking specifically for specific people. When a black person, just by being black and young, that makes me a criminal. That makes me a threat,” Bowser said. He feels there is a lack of community policing, which is commonly defined as the use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address concerns. “The culture has to be changed, the way [police] come into our community—they have to build those relationships. And they have to be here long enough,” Bowser said.The District Attorney's Office analyzed officer-involved shootings over the past 25 years.
