Hands up – don’t shoot!” could be heard from protesters at a recent gathering in Ville Platte, Louisiana.Yet, while free speech is a part of the First Amendment, it doesn’t extend as far as you might think.One example: your job.“Those protections are nuanced,” said Mark Gaston Pearce, who is with Georgetown Law’s Workers Rights Institute and is a former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board under President Obama. “People are under the false impression that a private sector employment relationship affords you all of the rights that are guaranteed to you by the constitution – but it does not.”In other words, an employer, in a state where employment is “at will,” could potentially fire someone for attending or participating in a protest.“Provided, of course, that it’s non-discriminatory,” Pearce said.There are a few exceptions. Federal and state employees are protected because they work for the government. Unions also have some protections. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The intersection of a global pandemic and a national opioid crisis is a place Alvin Dutruch knows well.“This kind of came out of nowhere,” he said.Dutruch is a recovering opioid addict who spent time in prison in Louisiana, but now he works to coach others dealing with addiction.“I have 33 months of clean time, which is the longest period clean time that I've had in the last 15 years,” he said.However, he added that it’s the past six months that have been some of the toughest of his recovery.“The only thing I'm doing is I'm just secluded here and I'm in my head,” Dutruch said. “And that is the worst thing that a recovering addict can do is get in their own head because in all this self-doubt starts coming around.”It’s a seclusion stemming from something we saw first-hand this summer in Vermont: the pandemic forcing recovery treatment centers to close their doors.“The pandemic hit and, of course, everything just went, everyone just retreated to their homes,” Gary de Carolis, director of the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County, Vermont, told us in July.Experts say that isolation is likely leading to more opioid overdoses.The full picture of 2020 is still unfolding, but according to the Association of American Medical Colleges and national lab service Millennium Health, which recently analyzed a half-million drug tests taken during the pandemic from March to May, there was an increase of 32% in non-prescribed fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, found in those tests.Overall, drug overdoses increased 18% during that same time.The numbers don’t surprise Dutruch.“You didn't take a self-help class or life-skills class to ever get you prepared for a pandemic that is going to cut off all of your recovery resources to you,” he said.Though he admits it’s not perfect, Dutruch said telehealth and virtual meetings can help, anything to give someone in recovery a connection to someone else. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Firefighters recently pulled six dogs from a burning building in Washington D.C.Crews responded to the scene Tuesday after receiving a report of a row house on fire.Four residents made it out but told firefighters six dogs were still inside. One by one, the pups were pulled out of the building.One of the dogs was found unconscious but was treated and revived at the scene.
