YINGXIU, Sichuan, May 12 (Xinhua) -- One year after a massive earthquake hit China's southwestern inland, Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday mourned quake victims with a white chrysanthemum and a motivating speech calling for collective strength in face of extreme hardship.     On 2:28 p.m. Tuesday, exactly one year after the devastating quake shattered many areas in Sichuan and neighboring provinces, President Hu, in dark suit and a blue-and-white stripped tie, paid his respect at a white marble memorial wall on which a written record was inscribed. Chinese President Hu Jintao places a white chrysanthemum in front of a commemorative wall of the earthquake during the commemorative service to mark the first anniversary of May 12 Earthquake in Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, May 12, 2009Beside the monument wall stands a giant granite clock, purposely made cracked, showing the exact time as the tremor occurred. The mourning venue was located among destroyed buildings, including one once belonged to the Xuankou Middle School in the 12,000-resident Yingxiu town, the epicenter of the earthquake. Two thirds of Yingxiu residents lost their lives. Among them 44 were students or teachers from the particular school. A national flag-raising ceremony is held during the commemorative service to mark the first anniversary of May 12 Earthquake in Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, on May 12, 2009The former school gate was decorated Tuesday with white and yellow silk flower, a symbol of grief in the Chinese culture.     After solemn music played by a white uniform-clad military trumpeter, President Hu said, "The country mobilized the fastest, widest and strongest relief efforts when the whole Chinese nation was faced with the unprecedented challenge from the quake disaster."     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Sichuan hours after the quake hit the province to direct relief work.     "Our quick response helped save lots of lives and minimize property losses incurred by the quake," Hu said.     The most destructive quake in China's history, the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan's Wenchuan county and affected some parts of the provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu on May 12, 2008, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing and the property loss valued at, in official estimates, more than 800 billion yuan (117 billion U.S. dollars).     Mentioning global aid to China's quake relief, Hu said, "On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I express, once again, heartfelt thanks to foreign leaders, governments, political parties, social institutions and embassies in China for their deep care and support to quake relief and reconstruction."     He also thanked United Nations organizations and other international institutions and foreign friendly personages for their care and support

BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with U.S. special envoy for climate change Todd Stern on Monday, calling for more dialogues and substantial cooperation with the United States on climate change.     "China has noticed the change of the U.S. government on climate change as well as the positive measures it has taken," Li told Stern during their meeting in the Great Hall of the People.     To strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two countries helps the growth of China-U.S. ties and benefits the international cooperation to fight against climate change, the vice premier said. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (1st R) meets with Todd Stern, U.S. special envoy for climate change, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, on June 8, 2009.    Stern said his country is ready to enhance dialogue and cooperation in energy, environment and climate change areas and work closely for the success of the Copenhagen Conference at the end of this year.     A new protocol was expected to be born in Copenhagen by the end of this year to replace the Kyoto Protocol to prevent global warming and climate change.     Li said China approves the fulfillment of the Bali Roadmap as the key mission of the Copenhagen Conference, and also approves promoting the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol in a comprehensive, efficient and consistent way.     China would like to maintain the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" among developed and developing countries, actively participate in negotiations and play a constructive role to promote positive results from the conference, Li added.     Stern expressed appreciation for China's achievements in recent years in fighting climate change.     Li told the guest the Chinese government promotes sustainable development amidst efforts to address climate change, with conserving energy and protecting the environment as its national strategy.

MOSCOW, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are able to realize rapid economic growth after the current financial crisis tides over, said Chinese and Russian experts during a Beijing-Moscow televised conference on Monday.     The emerging economies, represented by the BRIC countries, are playing a stabilizing role amid the ongoing crisis, said Chen Fengying, director of the Institute of World Economy Studies in China's Institute of Contemporary International Relations.     Chen said the BRIC countries, which could contribute much more to the global economic growth this year, may further lead the world economy in a post-crisis era, should they realize the industrial restructuring and the transition of economic growth patterns.     Judging from macroeconomic indicators such as international balances, scales of debt and deficit, the BRIC countries may weather through the financial crisis earlier than the major developed countries, said Lev Frainkman, an expert from Russia's Institute for the Economy in Transition.     These countries also have ample reserve funds to implement their anti-crisis measures, said Frainkman.     The BRIC summit scheduled to be held in mid-June in Yekaterinburg, Russia, has displayed BRIC countries' cooperative willingness to jointly ward off the crisis, said Sergei Alexashenko, director of Macroeconomic Studies at Russia's Higher School of Economics.     BRIC countries may integrate respective resources to seek cooperation in aircraft manufacture and software development, he added.     Li Yongquan, deputy director of the Euro-Asian Social Development Research Institute at China's Development Research of the State Council, said of all the bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the framework of the BRIC countries, he particularly expects a great prospect for China-Russia cooperation.     Li suggested China and Russia further exploit cooperative potentials in four spheres such as technologies, natural resources, human resources and marketing.

BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The China Ping An Insurance (Group), which had plans to buy a 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) stake in Shenzhen Development Bank (SDB), said Sunday that there are no changes in buying into the bank for the moment.     There are no changes in the bank, and the stake purchase aims to improve Ping An's financial service and asset structure, said Zhang Zixin, general manager of the China's second largest insurer via a telephone news conference.     Ping An and SDB will operate with their own plans. The management team of the bank will not change right now, according to the Frank Newman, president of SDB, and Richard Jackson, president of the Ping An Bank Co., Ltd.     The company said last Friday it would buy 520 million shares from the U.S.-based TPG's Asian arm Newbridge Capital for 11.45 billion yuan by the end of 2010. Newbridge Capital is currently the top shareholder in Shenzhen Development Bank.     The Ping An would acquire no more than a 30 percent stake in Shenzhen Development Bank after the two deals, and become the top shareholder instead.     The Ping An Group, together with Ping An Life Insurance, currently holds a 4.68 percent stake in Shenzhen Development Bank.
