SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A growing number of San Diego companies are offering a low-cost healthcare plan for their employees. However, those employees have to go to Mexico for services. “It's cheap. It's easier,” says Alejandra Martinez. She’s one of the employees at the Hotel del Coronado who has opted for the hotel's cross-border HMO health plan called SIMNSA, which is licensed by the State of California.“[Are you] saving like 60 to 80%?” we ask. “Oh, yes,” she responds.Christina Carrillo is the president and CEO of SIMNSA. The plan provides for ER and urgent care visits in the U.S., but for everything else like routine medical care and prescriptions, employees must go to Mexico.The company has a network of providers across the border. Drivers get a medical pass to avoid long border waits. The monthly savings can be significant.“From the studies that we have, a typical U.S.-based plan for a fully insured HMO product will charge over ,000.00 for a family to receive healthcare coverage. SIMNSA tells 10News that its doctors belong to the National College of Physicians. SIMNSA is building a new, private hospital in Tijuana.“The facilities that we own are first class,” says Carrillo.Several San Diego hotels, casinos and restaurants are offering the option to their employees. Currently, the plan is only open to Mexican nationals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A popular summer reading program in City Heights had to adapt to overcome challenges from the Coronavirus.In previous years, the United Way of San Diego County's Readers in the Heights program offered kids a chance to explore books through active reading and play at community centers throughout the area. It aims to help kids avoid the summer "brain drain" of falling behind while not in class.In 2020, the Coronavirus Pandemic threatened to cancel the program, since gatherings were prohibited."We heard across the board that the transition from in-person to online schools was leading to a bit of online fatigue," says Ian Gordon, the United Way of San Diego County Senior VP and Chief Impact Officer.Rather than more Zoom-based readings or online classes, the United Way of San Diego County decided to base the program out of each family's home.They gave out 1500 books and more than 400 activity kits to keep the kids engaged over the summer. They also encouraged parents and siblings to read with the kids."It was different in many ways," says Gordon. "But it absolutely was successful."According to the United Way of San Diego County, 93% of the families in the program continued reading throughout the summer. At the end, 85% of the kids said they enjoyed reading, compared with 55% at the beginning of the summer.Parents also said they felt more confident and comfortable reading with their children."It was really nice," says Emily Lira. Her son Brian and daughter Emily took part in the program."It gave me more time to set apart from my schedule to read a book with the kids," she says.The United Way of San Diego County also gave the families face masks and hand sanitizer to help with safety during the summer. They also gave out backpacks filled with school supplies to help the kids adjust to school in the fall.The United Way of San Diego County partnered with City Heights Community Development Corporation, Karen Organization of San Diego, Words Alive, San Diego Council on Literacy, City Heights Weingart Library, Fleet Science Center, Traveling Stories, International Rescue Committee Small Business Development Center, RevCult, Target, UWSD’s Women United, and Count Me 2020 to provide all of the books and materials to the families, free of charge. 2298

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A marijuana delivery driver was robbed at gun point and shot in North Park late Friday.According to San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims, the 21-year-old victim was making a delivery in the 2000 block of Haller Street at about 9:01 p.m. when a gunmen approached his vehicle and demanded marijuana.Related: Million dollar Fed?cartel seizureThe driver grabbed the suspect's gun and as they wrestled for the weapon the driver was shot twice in the right hand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego judge says police departments must release records related to officer misconduct.The decision comes after local media groups, including 10News, sued to keep some police unions from blocking departments from following a groundbreaking new law in California.“This court finds that Senate Bill 1421 applies retroactively, to all, keyword, all personnel records of peace officers not only now but prior to January 1, 2019,” said San Diego County Superior Court Judge Eddie Sturgeon.Senate Bill 1421 requires departments to release records of officer-involved shootings and major uses of force, officer dishonesty and confirmed cases of sexual assault to the public.Several police associations in San Diego County sued to block the release of records, arguing Senate Bill 1421 doesn’t contain any express provision or language requiring retro-activity or any clear indication that the legislature intended the statue to operate retroactively. They claimed the bill eliminates the longstanding statutory confidentiality of specified peace officer or custodial officer personnel records.“These records have been under seal for 45 years, and when you have that kind of duration, and decisions are made for that long than it is going to create substantial disruption when the law changes, and all of a sudden these things have been under seal for four and half decades are available for public perusal,” said Richard Pinckard, attorney for the unions.An attorney for the ACLU argued they intervened in the case to defend the public right to know saying the law was designed to be retroactive.“These are fundamental matters that the public has a right to know,” said David Loy, attorney for the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties. “To restore public trust the public has to have the right to know and observe what the officers have done and what the agencies have said about it.”The Judge ruled no records could be released before March 29. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new leadership course created by a San Diego entrepreneur is breaking down barriers for minority women in business.Christelyn Karazin grew up in Los Angeles County, where she said she didn't see a lot of representation in the classroom."A lot of times I would be the only Black person in the classroom, the only Black person anywhere," Karazin said.She said she learned to get comfortable in a predominantly White world."I graduated from Loyola Marymount University as a Communications Major and graduated Cum Laude. I thought I had all the skills I needed to do really well and then I met my boss from hell," Karazin said solemnly.At the first "get to know your team" lunch, her boss said she was "lucky" to get the salary she was hired with and told the group how much she made, which was more than her colleagues. Karazin said she felt cut down at every turn.Her parents didn't have knowledge in this arena. She said her father was a sharecropper's son with an eighth-grade education and her mother was a schoolteacher.She was missing a rudder to navigate office politics, giving her the idea to launch a leadership course. It would teach other women what she's learned through decades of trials and tribulations."A big part of The Pink Pill is about learning the game and I organized it based on game pieces in chess... The king is a hierarchy management style, with very direct communication. I have a direct communication style but not everybody does." Karazin said knowing the communication style of your bosses and leveraging that will propel you upward.Lean In's State of Black Women in Corporate America Study published in 2020 shows Black women are severely underrepresented in senior management roles.Highlighting the importance of tools that help underrepresented communities rise. The Pink Pill for Business launched online on June 15."We have hundreds of people enrolled now," Karazin said. "It gives me such pleasure that the things I have went through, my failures, and this horrible experience was turned into something amazing."
