Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Bridging the gap between the community and the police department, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the men and women who patrol their streets every day. Daniel Palmer and Russ Connelly reminisced the good old days when the original owners from the 1950s took good care of the then-new Fairmount Park community. "Being in the area that is in the center of everything, it's very desirable," said Connelly, president of the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association. But as the years went on and the homes changed hands, so did the vibe of the neighborhood."The streets were dirty and the houses were getting more dilapidated," Palmer said. Palmer said there were numerous reports of drugs, break-ins, and speeding problems along Parrot Street."We have a straight part of a downhill side of the street called the 'Parrot Way speedway,'" Connelly said. "A person was hit and run just a couple of hundred yards from my house," Palmer said. But the moment they shared their concerns with patrol officers, they said something changed. Instead of merely ticketing offenders, they said the officers took the time to engage with the community."I think that's had an effect on a lot of the neighbors because they suddenly seem to slow down, watch for traffic, watch what's going on," Connelly said. "You see people putting a coat of paint on their house. You see people picking up their yards. People are happier. They feel more secure," Palmer said. So as a token of their appreciation and hard work, the Fairmount Park Neighborhood Association threw a party for the Mid-City police officers and elected officials who make their area safe. Thank you, they said, for making Fairmount Park the desirable, sweet community it once was. "It's more of a family environment than it was five to six years ago. In all honesty, it's a lot cleaner. People are more friendly. There's more participation, more interaction. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The sound of illegal fireworks in the San Diego area is not uncommon around the Fourth of July, but there is an increase in activity this year. San Diego Police Department Sergeant Matthew Botkin said from May 21 to June 21, 2019, the SDPD received 37 calls regarding illegal firework reports. During that same time period in 2020, there were 236 calls.Related: Fireworks continue boom in New York as residents wonder why the noise“I was sleeping, it was like 12 midnight, 1 a.m. and I heard explosions kinda close to my window,” said Stina Pezze, a Mission Beach resident.Jamie Young, a Pacific Beach resident, also has heard them at night, saying she’s lived in the area for 16 years and is used to the typical occasional illegal fireworks around the summer holiday, but this year has been much worse and started earlier.“They started easily a couple weeks ago and it would just be random weeknights we’d get woken up by them at 2 in the morning,” said Young.Neighbors are chiming in online asking where they’re coming from and why there seem to be more. Sergeant Botkin said the simple answer is that they don’t know."I'm not quite sure why the increase, I don’t have a reason why that’s the case but there’s certainly an uptick in them and we hope they go down," he said, also pointing out the difficulty in issuing citations. “We’re always more attentive this time of year to calls like this but you can imagine it’s really kinda difficult to nail down where these are coming from unless it’s coming out of your backyard."He noted that neighbors play a key role in reporting people using fireworks because citing specific locations makes police response easier. He also mentioned how dangerous fireworks can be, with 180 people across the country going to the hospital every day for firework-related injuries around this time of year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- With the rainy season ahead, the City of San Diego is offering ways for residents to save money on their water bills by removing lawns and installing rain barrels. The City is offering .25 per square foot for lawns that are converted to turf that can capture rainfall for reuse. Homeowners that convert their lawn into drought resistant landscape can apply for financial rebates.Customers may receive  per gallon of barrel storage capacity for residential rainwater collecting up to 400 gallons or 0 per property. Rain barrels are a great way to conserve water and reuse for irrigation purposes as well as preventing pollution, according to city officials. Applications are available for Rainwater Harvest, to apply click here. For more information on the types of rebates and water conservation tips visit the City's website. 949
