SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family hit hard by the pandemic is picking up the pieces after a fire gutted their home.Raegan Gaedke's brother shot cellphone video of smoke pouring out of their home on Verlane Drive on Sunday evening. Minutes before, Raegan, 16, and her brother Ryley, 17, had returned home from a grocery run, before discovering smoke in their parents' bedroom."Ran and got my dog out. My brother turned off the power and got the fire extinguisher, but it was too late. The fire spread too much," said Gaedke.Their mom Cyndi, who was visiting relatives, says fire crews later told them the cause was a window air conditioner. The home they had been renting for the last 12 years is a total loss."So hard for me to comprehend we have nothing. It's all gone," said Cyndi.Cyndi says they did not have renters insurance. It's a purchase set to the side."You think you'll get back to it, and you don't. Won't make that mistake again. It's hard to describe how stressful this has been," said Cyndi.The stress levels already high since the start of the pandemic. Cyndi's husband, the breadwinner of the family and a commercial fisherman, has been out of work. His job counted on now-grounded international flights for shipping. The amount of money they family is receiving from unemployment is modest. Paying the rent had become a concern."We did have quite a bit of savings, but that's all gone. it's been tough and awful. My husband has had a lot of anxiety, as well as me," said Cyndi.Right now, family members are staying with relatives. A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family. 1617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday.The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said.  “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes.The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken mother is making a plea for tips after a burglar makes off with a computer with with "priceless memories."An upset Sheila Conway shared her story with 10News, weeks after she returned to her home on Norwich Street to a break-in. It appears the burglar opened an unlocked outer door, before somehow opening another door. Taken were Conway's purse and her silver HP laptop. Inside that computer: A lifetime of memories of her only child, her son Tyler Peckham. Tyler, diagnosed with schizophrenia, took his own life in 2014 at the age of 26. Just off the kitchen is a wall memorial dedicated to Tyler, filled with photos showing Tyler growing up into adulthood. Conway says the computer contained hundreds of photos, most of them not backed up. “Cried a lot and just furious. It wasn’t a laptop, but memories that were stolen … everything from baby pictures to adult photos that I’ll never see again,” said Conway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was Tased in the face and stabbed several times during a fight in the Rolando Park neighborhood, according to police. The incident happened near Newsome Drive and Odom Street around 1:19 a.m. Sunday. According to police, two brothers were visiting their girlfriends in the neighborhood when the two men got into a fight with a nearby group. I know I probably lose some business, possibly yours too, because of my choice not to chase him away but I won't. He's not looking for handouts and he tries not to bother anyone.
