SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North Park woman is wondering what went wrong after she quickly paid off a fine for a parking ticket, and then got hit with a big late fee.On the second Tuesday in November, Stacy parked her car on Meade Avenue near her home in the morning. When she got off work later that day, she found something unexpected on her windshield."I didn't read the sign correctly. Parked in a spot that said 'No Parking' and got a ticket," said Stacy, who asked 10news not to use her last name.For parking in a street sweeping zone, she received a ticket for .50."Wrote the check the next day and sent it in the mail the following day," said Stacy.Stacy says she included the ticket in her payment and put the citation number on the check."At that point, I thought everything was fine," said Stacy.A few weeks later, she got a notice from the city saying the citation hasn't been paid, and she had a few weeks to pay it. Stacy wrote another check for .50 and sent it in the mail. She stopped payment on her initial check. Fast forward to late December, when she got another notice. Her payment had been received, but she now owed a late fee of ."How I felt was frustration. I felt a lot of frustration, because I felt like I had done what I was supposed to do," said Stacy.Stacy ended up paying the late fee online. She's not alone. After posting details of her ordeal on the Nextdoor app, another driver responded with a similar story. He reported that his check wasn't processed until after the late deadline."My concern is other people aren't able to afford late fee," said Stacy.Stacy won't be mailing any more checks when dealing with the city. "If checks aren't the way to do things, and they can't get to the volume ... we just need to know about it," said Stacy.Stacy says her initial payment didn't get lost in the mail, because the city tried to cash it - weeks after the late deadline.A city spokesperson released the following statement:"Check payments are processed by a third party vendor located in Inglewood, Calif. The average processing time in calendar year 2019 was six days for payments mailed to the vendor. Recently, the vendor encountered delays due to the installation of new remittance processing equipment. The new equipment had connectivity issues which created a backlog of payments. Customers who reached out to the Office of the City Treasurer during the backlog were advised not to stop payment on their checks, the postmark date was considered the legal payment date. When the payments were processed, the postmark date would automatically roll back any late fees if assessed. The Office of the City Treasurer generally advises customers to use the online option as the payments are posted in real-time ... (Stacy) put a stop payment on her original check payment. When stop payments are initiated on checks, it triggers an automatic process that rolls back the original payment. When this occurs, the bank will assess a stop payment fee that is added to the balance due. Late fees were automatically assessed. Her original payment was timely. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit and business owner came together to donate thousands of dollars to families in need during the pandemic Wednesday.Non-profit Black San Diego started up in September with the goal of bolstering Black-owned businesses and giving them tools to succeed.They have a Facebook page with 36,000 members.On December 19th, Porschia Wyatt posted asking for prayers for her family."Recently my husband was laid off from his job, he works for the Cheesecake Factory, so time’s been hard for me and my family," she said.She and her husband have a 15-year-old daughter, 7 and 8-year-old sons and a 20-month old daughter.Getting Christmas presents was going to be hard, and November 16th made it even more difficult."I had just ate pizza and next thing you know I started throwing up and I couldn’t breath or anything so I was rushed to the hospital," she said she had an abdominal blockage.She underwent three surgeries and came home on the 25th. Now she had huge medical bills to worry about, which was what pushed her to type a message to the BSD community.She got an overwhelming response, more than a hundred comments and a surprise at her doorstep Wednesday morning.Jaime Harris, owner of Big Block Realty, was holding a giant check for ,000."There are so many families that are affected you know? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A landmark Supreme Court ruling today extended workplace protections for LGBTQ workers nationwide.Years ago, and a few months into a new job in San Diego, Lina Craychee says she came out as transgender and was promptly transferred from a store location to a corporate job."My boss told me I had to. They wouldn't let me present as female in the store level, because it would hurt business," said Craychee.Craychee says she kept silent and accepted the transfer because she needed the job. It's the type of silence she hopes will fade away after an historic Supreme Court ruling. By a 6-3 majority, the court extended 1964 Civil Rights Act protections to LGBTQ employees, who now can't be fired or discriminated against in the workplace because of their sexual orientation.While California protects LGBTQ workers against discrimination, nearly 30 states do not."Huge feeling of relief and victory," said Eddie Reynoso, executive director of the Equality Business Alliance in San Diego.Last fall, Reynoso camped for 72 hours on the Supreme Court steps for the opportunity to witness the arguments."In terms of impact, this will be bigger than the marriage equality ruling," said Reynoso.Reynoso says the ruling sends a powerful message across the country."Ultimately it means the workplace is going to be a safer place. LGBT workers will have an affirming work environment," said Reynoso.While this ruling is directed at the workplace, experts say this could open to door for other challenges involving LGBTQ discrimination. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant and dollar store were damaged Sunday morning after a fire started in Lincoln Park.The fire started inside the Herencias Mexican Food restaurant around 6 a.m. on the 5000 block of Logan Avenue.Crews arrived on scene and the fire was knocked out by 8 a.m.No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the blaze, but fire crews say a neighboring Family Dollar store was damaged.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 463
