SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. He faces life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth.Merron allegedly attacked the woman as she was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street about 4:30 a.m. last Sunday, pushing her into a back room, taking her car keys and threatening her with a knife.Following a struggle, the victim, whose name was withheld, was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Southwest High School student was detained today for displaying what initially appeared to be a firearm over his home computer during a remote-learning class, police reported.A staff member at the Hollister Street campus reported the potential threat shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.Patrol personnel went to the teen's nearby Nestor-area home and called him out, then took him into custody for questioning, Officer Scott Lockwood said.After the youth -- who turned out to be in possession of a BB gun, not a real firearm -- complained of shortness of breath, medics transported him to Rady Children's Hospital for an evaluation.The student, whose identity was withheld, was not expected to face any criminal charges over the incident but will undergo a psychiatric screening intended to determine the motivation for his actions, Lockwood said. 895

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed when his car was struck by a trolley after he drove past a trolley crossing gate in the Valencia Park area, police said Tuesday.The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Merlin Drive and Imperial Avenue, east of Valencia Parkway, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 22-year-old man was driving a Toyota Prius southbound on 60th Street toward Imperial Avenue when he drove past trolley crossing arms and was struck by an eastbound trolley, Buttle said. The impact pushed the vehicle about 100 feet down the tracks.The victim, the only occupant of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station pleaded guilty Wednesday to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, faces a year in local prison when he is sentenced Nov. 1.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally stabbing a 65-year-old clerk inside an adult bookstore in the Midway District pleaded not guilty Friday to felony murder charges that could lead to the death penalty if he's convicted.Shaun Ward, 39, was non-responsive and kept his head down during his arraignment. He was ordered held without bail in the death of 65-year-old Diane Spagnuolo.Ward refused to answer questions from Judge Maureen Hallahan about his true name or date of birth.The judge read Ward his constitutional rights and his attorney entered the not guilty plea for him.Ward was charged with murder and special circumstance allegations that the murder was committed during a robbery and that the murder involved the infliction of torture.District Attorney Summer Stephan will decide later if Ward will face life in prison without the possibility of parole or capital punishment if he's found guilty.The victim was found dead inside the X Spot Adult Store on Midway Drive on Monday afternoon, according to San Diego police.
