SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service unveiled its newest forever stamp Wednesday, honoring pioneering astronaut and UC San Diego professor Sally Ride.The ceremony, held at the UCSD campus, featured several of Ride's family and friends, including her life and business parter, Tam O'Shaughnessy, astronaut and Director of the Johnson Space Center Ellen Ochoa, and tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King.RELATED: First American woman in space to be honored with the Sally Ride Forever Stamp"It's amazing the impact and the long-lasting impact that Sally Ride's going to have," King told 10News. "She just kept doing it her whole life, so she would just be so honored with this."Ride was the first American woman in space. Upon leaving NASA, she became a professor. Ride simultaneously founded a business called "Sally Ride Science", which is housed at UCSD. It is dedicated to inspiring young people in STEM.Ride died of pancreatic cancer in 2012 at age 61. 1124

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pinch of the partial shutdown on federal government agencies and employees approached a squeeze Wednesday as workers prepared for their first pay period without a paycheck. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees who are furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown are anticipating an end to the political standoff. The partial shutdown, which took effect Dec. 21, forced 420,000 workers to continue their jobs without pay. 380,000 workers were furloughed nationwide. 5,000 of the affected workers are in San Diego County, according to Rep. Scott Peters' office, which cited the Association of Federal Government Workers. Border Patrol agents enforcing the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County are among the affected employees. So are TSA agents, including those who kept holiday travelers safe at Lindbergh Field. Dozens of national parks and museums, including Smithsonian facilities, closed Wednesday as they ran out of money. Yosemite National Park limited entry due to problems with human waste and public safety. Visitors were told to use restrooms in nearby communities before entering the park. The Coast Guard is scaling back boating safety checks, mariner licensing, and fishing law enforcement, according to Politico. Tax filing season, which usually starts in January, may start later, and many IRS workers may be called to work without pay for filing season. The most recent pay period ended Dec. 22, with paychecks arriving Dec. 28. The next pay period ends Jan. 5, with the check due Jan. 11. There’s a possibility that check may never come. Workers may be paid retroactively but it would take an act of Congress. To make the financial picture even more grim for federal employees, President Trump issued an executive order Friday, freezing their pay for 2019. Their 2.1 percent hike was supposed to take effect this month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three of the four American tourists killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Sunday night were from San Diego.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey told 10News David Baker, a Coronado resident, was killed in the crash. The US Embassy identified Brandon Stapper and Asher Burke, who also lived in San Diego, as victims earlier in the day Monday. They were riding in a helicopter that crashed in the Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana on country's northern border at 8:35 p.m. Sunday (2:35 a.m. ET), Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement posted on its website."A rescue team was dispatched immediately and they arrived at the Central Island at around 11:20 p.m. and located the wreckage at 3:20 a.m. with no survivors," Kenya's aviation chief Gilbert Kibe said.READ: Pilot, 4 Americans killed in helicopter crash in KenyaStaff at Stapper's graphics company near Mission Hills told 10News that they learned Sunday evening the self-made entrepreneur was killed in the accident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego County jury trials are on-hold because of the pandemic. Local court officials have requested another extension from the Judicial Council of California for jury trials to be postponed through mid-September.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about the challenges of returning to jury trials. “We’re at 25-hundred jury trials that need to be tried,” she told us.Trials were halted on March 17th. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process. “What we can't do right now is bring a jury into the courthouse. When you can't even go to a restaurant to eat, the idea of bringing hundreds of people in to sit in a room together is not recommended,” she told ABC10 News.Courtrooms are being retrofitted with plexiglass barriers to protect everyone from jurors to defendants to court staff. Judge Alksne said other safety measures like social distancing will also be implemented, when appropriate.“Once you do resume the process of summoning jurors, what if they just don't feel comfortable? They fear the risk?” we asked. “Jury service is a duty that we hold in high regard. We can't have criminal justice service work without jurors so I would hope that by the time we actually pull jurors in and ask them to come down that unless they have a health condition that would make it unsafe here, that they would be willing to serve,” she responded.The court is still working through other complex issues like the possible need for more alternate jurors. “In other jurisdictions where they have tried to start jury trials up and down the State of California, one juror getting COVID-19 or having symptoms will send everyone home and you'll have a mistrial,” she added.Judge Alksne also said there are currently about 300 violent felony defendants in custody who are waiting to be tried. 1903

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. Construction is set to begin June 2020 and finish by June 2022. 1116
