SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Uber driver helped a Lyft driver after a crash on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley Monday.The Uber driver told 10News he was exiting eastbound I-8 at Mission Gorge Rd. at 1:45 a.m. when he saw an SUV on its side, blocking the road.The man turned on his hazard lights and used his Uber car to block the road while he ran to help, he said.The Lyft driver was trapped and screaming for help, according to the man.The Uber driver said he kicked the windshield until he formed a hole the Lyft driver could climb through.Paramedics took the Lyft driver to the hospital with cuts and bruises.CHP officers are investigating the cause of the crash.The Lyft driver was not arrested but told the CHP his 'mind wasn't working', according to Officer Jim Bettencourt. 806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman died and her son was hospitalized after a shooting at a Linda Vista home early Monday morning.According to San Diego police, officers were called to the 2200 block of Crandall Drive at around 3:15 a.m. in response to a report of gunfire in a home.Officers arrived to find a male and female down with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.The victims were taken to the hospital, but the woman -- identified by police as a 46-year-old Vietnamese female -- died from her injuries.The injured man -- described by police as a 28-year-old Vietnamese male -- is on life support, but police noted that he is not expected to survive his injuries.Police said they were not actively searching for a suspect, as they believe one of the victims was the shooter. 783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An official with the Encinitas Union School District confirmed Sunday a presumptive positive case of COVID-19.In a release sent to families of the district, Superintendent Andree Grey said "individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary" tested positive. Grey could not provide further details citing privacy restrictions."I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. At the same time, we want to provide you with as much information as possible," Grey said.Grey said county health officials are investigating the case and that the patient is isolated at home.The district is notifying people who may have been exposed and asking them to self-quarantine, Grey added.READ FULL STATEMENTMarch 15, 2020 Dear Staff and Families, As you know, as a nation and as a community we are seeing the increasing numbers of citizens testing positive for COVID-19. An individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary has tested presumptive positive for COVID-19. In situations with infectious diseases, we are required to follow the direction of the Center for Disease Control, California Department of Health, and the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). This includes following procedures related to HIPAA and privacy standards. I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. At the same time, we want to provide you with as much information as possible. The San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services is currently in the process of investigating and the individual is in home isolation and being monitored. EUSD is notifying individuals who may have been exposed and asking them to self-quarantine. Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals and humans. This novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is a newly discovered coronavirus causing respiratory illness that has not been previously detected in animals or humans. Due to the way the COVID-19 virus is spread, per current protocol (directed by the Centers for Disease Control), HHSA suggests we consider all of us as being potentially exposed. If you are ill, it is recommended you separate from others in the home, wear a face mask, cover cough and sneezes, clean hands and surfaces often, and avoid sharing personal items.
