CHANGZHOU, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday called for more favorable policies to encourage the construction of affordable housing.Li made the remarks at a meeting on affordable housing held in Changzhou city of east China's Jiangsu Province.He reiterated that China would complete construction of 5.8 million units of affordable housing, including low-rent housing, public rental housing and resettlement housing for relocated residents from redeveloped urban shanty towns.In May, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development signed an agreement with local governments nationwide to build 5.8 million units of affordable housing."Meanwhile, measures should be taken to increase the supply of commercial housing to meet people's reasonable needs of housing consumption," he said.He said local governments should adopt a realistic approach to affordable housing construction and plans should be based upon local needs.For populous cities, construction should focus on public rental housing that provides homes for low- and medium-income families, newly-employed school graduates and migrant workers, he said.
ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Amid sirens and blaring horns, people across China Sunday stood in tribute to victims of a massive mudslide in a remote northwest town.Chinese leaders, students, workers and members of the public paused for three minutes from 10 a.m. Sunday, a week after the devastating mudslide hit Zhouqu County, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province.At least 1,248 people have died and 496 are listed as missing.Chinese President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and other top Chinese leaders stood and paid silent tribute to the victims at the beginning of a meeting by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee held in Beijing on Sunday morning.DEEP GRIEFAt the Dongjie Village in Zhouqu, more than 5,000 rescuers and villagers stood still on the debris of mudslide, bowing their heads in commemoration of those killed in the disaster.A huge black banner hung in front of the mourners, and wreaths lay on the ground. The white lettering on the banner read, "Mourning in deep grief for deceased compatriots of the Zhouqu massive mudslide.""I only feel sad as I stand on the debris of our homes," said villager Zhang Xiujuan."Although my husband, my son and I survived, I lost more than 30 relatives in the mudslide," she said.In Dongjie, two thirds of the families were buried when the mudslide struck. And 368 of the 848 villagers died in the disaster.Before and after the three-minute tribute, rescuers including troops and medical workers continued to clear the debris, searching for bodies and spraying disinfectant in the area.Some survivors sat silently on the debris, still holding out hope that the bodies of relatives could be found.

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Five fishermen are missing after their fishing boat collided with an unknown vessel that then fled off the coast of south China's Guangdong Province early on Wednesday, local authorities said.The wooden fishing boat sank after colliding with the unknown vessel along the coast of Lufeng City in the early morning. Seven fishermen aboard the boat fell into the water, and two were subsequently saved by rescuers, the Lufeng Municipal Emergency Affairs Office said in a statement.The unknown vessel fled the scene following the collision, it said.Local maritime authorities are searching the area for both the five missing people and the runaway vessel, it added.
BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader in charge of disciplinary and supervision work Thursday stressed the need for higher-caliber anti-graft officials in the country's fight against corruption.He Guoqiang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a forum with representatives of municipal-district level anti-corruption officials.He, also head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, told the anti-corruption officials to stand firm in their faith of socialism and remain vigilant in the fight against corruption.He said the officials should improve their work skills through theoretical studies and training.The anti-corruption officials should always be people-oriented and carefully listen to public opinion, He said.He also told the officials that it was imperative for them to be self-disciplined and clean-handed to show an example.China trained more than 2,000 anti-graft officials at county level nationwide in 2009 and over 400 officials at city level in this June.About 850 anti-graft officials at municipal-district level around China are being trained in Beijing currently.
BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday denied claims in a U.S. government report, saying it exaggerated China's military strength."We firmly oppose this report," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a press release when asked to comment on the annual report by the U.S. Defense Department.She said the report exaggerated China's military strength, and unfairly blamed China for some problems that exist in the bilateral military relationship."China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is defensive in nature," Jiang said, noting that China is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."We urge the U.S side to respect this fact," she said.Jiang also urged the United States to stop issuing such reports on China's military, and work towards improving relations between the two militaries and the two nations, instead of working against China.
