While negotiations continue in Congress to reach a deal to avert a partial government shutdown, there is virtually no chance a vote will happen Friday night -- all but assuring there will be a government shutdown at midnight. The House has adjourned, and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn says there will be no vote Friday night in the Senate.Barring any very unexpected change, the third government shutdown of the year will happen.Vice President Mike Pence, budget director Mick Mulvaney and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were on Capitol Hill on Friday afternoon meeting with senators, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, about finding a solution. The President has repeatedly said he is unwilling to accept anything less than billion for his long-promised border wall. But the fact that the billion border wall is viewed as a measure that would be impossible to pass in the Senate indicates that votes aren't there on the Hill to meet the President's demand.Funding for roughly a quarter of the federal government expires at midnight, including appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and other parts of the government. 1266
US authorities in Philadelphia seized a cargo vessel in June with nearly 20 tons of cocaine on board. The ship, as it turns out, is owned by a fund run by banking giant JPMorgan Chase.A source close to the situation said on Wednesday that the ship, the MSC Gayane, is part of a transportation strategy fund run for the bank's asset management unit. That means JPMorgan Chase does not have any operational control of the vessel, a Liberian-flagged ship that is run by the Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company. The bank had no comment.Law enforcement agents 573

WASHINGTON — The U.S. added 2.5 million jobs in May as the unemployment rate fell slightly to 13.5%.The new report indicates that the economy is recovering from the coronavirus pandemic faster than previously thought. The monthly unemployment report for April painted a bleak picture of the economic devastation wrought by COVID-19 — the unemployment rate jumped up to 14.7 percent, a jump of more than 10 percentage points. The report also suggested that more than 20 million jobs had been wiped away from the economy. But Friday's report painted an encouraging sign that businesses are quickly re-hiring workers as states gradually lift coronavirus-related lockdown restrictions. While some states are moving faster than others, every state has moved forward in lifting at least some lockdown restrictions.During a press conference at the White House Friday, President Donald Trump took credit for the newest report, claiming the economy's strength prior to the pandemic allowed for a quick bounce-back. 1015
