MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The re-energized racial justice movement has brought to light more systemic disparities, especially in criminal justice reform.“What we are saying is we have to have a system that does not prejudice people due to their poverty,” said Jared Mollenkof, an executive board member of the Minnesota Freedom Fund. “In reality, if you have enough money, you will always get out.”The Minnesota Freedom Fund started in 2016 as a small operation dedicated to ending cash bail systems. They helped bail out about 67 people last year.Following demonstrations set off by George Floyd's killing, donations started flooding in to help get protesters out of jail. Just since May, they've now bailed out at least ninety people.People all over the world, about 1 million individuals, have donated some million.“We have criminalized everything. We arrest people for bull**** and then we try to force it all through a system that would not be able to keep up, but for the fact that it leaves all these people in cages and counts on the fact that people want to get home,” said Mollenkof.The Minnesota Freedom Fund says getting people out pre-trial now, with COVID-19, is even more important.It says in the past, a third of people it has bailed out have had their cases dismissed.People are less likely to plead guilty when they're not held in custody. They are more likely to keep their job and even tend to get less harsh sentences if they are convicted.The Minnesota Freedom Fund says it intends to use the influx of donations to help arrested protesters.There are similar efforts in other states that you can find through The National Bail Fund Network. 1670

MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - The F-35C landed in Miramar Tuesday, the first of it's kind for the Department of Defense, according to officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.UPDATE: Officials later clarified the F-35C arriving at Miramar was the first for the Marine Corps.There are three versions of the F-35 Lightning II. The F-35C is the "carrier version", the largest of it's kind and able to land on an aircraft carrier's runway.The fighter jet is the most advanced in the military, "everything you look at is displayed in the helmet, I mean it's like in the movies," Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Cedar Hinton, USMC said.Hinton is the newest commander of the Black Knight Squadron at MCAS Miramar, who will inherit the incoming F-35Cs."This is an exciting time in the Black Knight history. This squadron was stood up in WWII like a lot of squadrons, this particular squadron's able to break a lot of milestones." He mentioned milestones that started in the 1950's with the F-9F Panther. That was the "Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighter" and landed with the Black Knights at Miramar. Then in the 1960's the squadron was the first in the Marine Corps to fly the F-4B Phantom.In the 1980's they were the first to fly the F/A-18.The F-35 got it's first test in combat in 2018, deploying to Afghanistan, and then in Iraq a year later."They've had some pretty good success with it, I mean it does what we paid for it to do," Lt. Col. Hinton said.It's record isn't pristine. The jet faced scrutiny when it suffered mechanical failures during development. In 2018, an F-35 crashed in South Carolina."I mean single engine airplane, but this engine is by far probably the most advance engine ever built... That engine is more reliable than two engines on an F-18 I'd say," Lt. Col. Hinton said.Miramar has been waiting for this moment since they retired the F/A-18 Hornet last June.Miramar will get another F-35C next week, and a third in March. The plan states the air station will get 75 jets over the next 10 years."We've got to start working the systems, we have to start integrating it with our software," Hinton said there's a lot of work to do to get the squadron up and running. More companies are trying four-day work weeks.Some are doing it to avoid laying people off during the pandemic. Others say it creates a better work-life-balance with employees at home.Elephant Ventures is a software company that started testing employees working four 10-hour days. It's a move to help employee morale and parents dealing with childcare and remote learning.“I think you still have the age-old conversation of if it's 40 hours compressed into four days, you still have how much productivity are you actually getting in a 10-hour workday,” said Barb Holland, an Human Resources Knowledge Advisor with SHRM.Productivity has gone up in other countries, like at Microsoft in Japan, when they tried a four-day work-week last year.Zip Recruiter has seen an increase in job postings that mention four-day work weeks this year.“If you're not wanting to lose your good workers or you're wanting to make sure they're not looking elsewhere for those places that are hiring, you have to be thinking about, ‘how do I retain my good staff,’” said Holland. “I don't want to lose them and flexibility I think is going to be a key piece of retaining staff in the future.”That HR expert says flexibility could be key to attracting new workers in the future.Elephant Ventures plans to test its new work week this month. Musicians of the Nashville Symphony have created a fund to raise money for furloughed members due to the COVID-19 shutdown.The Nashville Symphony Players’ Assembly set up the fund on their website. They're raising the money for 83 members of the orchestra who are still on a furlough that could last a full year. Click here to donate to the Nashville Symphony members. "It's really terrifying. You have a lot of single parents in the orchestra," said Melinda Whitley, a long time viola player for the symphony.Whitley said she knows of at least two musicians who have had to sell their home because of the furlough, which started on July 1."No one prepares, not on a musician's salary, to spend a year with no income," she said.To encourage people to donate, and to continue to play their music, the Musicians of the Nashville Symphony have continued to play live music online. This past weekend an online concert was held at St. George Episcopal Church in Nashville.A number of concerts have also been planned to help raise money for the musicians."This is Nashville. And it's a very creative place and a supportive place. If we can continue to serve the community the best way we know how then they will continue to help us. That's the best we can do for ourselves at this point," said Whitley.Whitley said she's worried more musicians will leave the orchestra if something doesn't change soon. MILWAUKEE — Surveillance video captured two porch pirates on a casual morning stroll. But what they don't know is that the owner of the package they're about to steal actually wants it to get taken. "Usually I get very mad when I see the package get stolen, but now this one I was like proud to show the video," said Jamie, who left a package of sweet revenge on her Milwaukee porch.Out of fear of retaliation, Jamie asked that her identity be concealed and to only use her first name. She says they've had about eight packages stolen from their front porch and have tried everything to fight back. They installed security cameras, asked for signed deliveries and even had items placed behind a fence. But somehow the thieves continued to be successful. Eventually, they decided to have everything delivered to work, but after a gift sent to her a month ago was stolen as well, she decided that was enough. "That's when we ordered the next package," she said. "We went on to a website that does anonymous deliveries and you can pick from all sorts of different fecal matter. The cheapest one is cow, we decided to go in full blast and we chose gorilla." The thieves didn't like what they had scooped up, and ended up tossing the item into a neighbor's yard. But they aren't the only thieves she's caught on camera. Video also shows a woman stealing that gift someone sent Jamie, that contained memorial stickers honoring her late father. "She threw it because it wasn't anything important to her but to me that was the most important package that had been taken off our porch," said Jamie. A neighbor ended up finding the discarded stickers in a nearby park. Jamie says she's tried to report the thefts to police, but she's been told it's a lost cause and the chances of catching these criminals are slim. So she hopes a little package payback will prevent thefts in the future. "We do live in a nice neighborhood," she said. "It's a nice a street, they're nice neighbors, we just don't know why it keeps happening to us."  2106
