(KGTV) - The family of the man found in a barrel in San Diego Bay, near Chula Vista, is working toward closure two years after he disappeared.Omar Medina’s body was found Oct. 12, 2017, after a diver found a white, 55-gallon drum floating in the bay. She's the oldest of three and stepped in as an extra parent growing up, as they didn't have a father."This is the thing I cared about most growing up, he [Omar] was like a child to me," Villegas said.Thinking about her 28-year-old brother, she dreams of what could have been, "going to his wedding. I miss not meeting my nieces and nephews, I miss not having cousins for my kids." She spoke publicly for the first time this year at Chula Vista Police's Evening with Heroes fundraiser."Once they came in I felt a weight lifted off my shoulder[s] and that's what they've meant to me, they have definitely been that strength I'm not," she said police showed her family kindness and empathy."[Detectives] who put their photo on their desk and said they're out there. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

(KGTV) – Police are investigating the death of a woman whose nude body was found in the middle of a Chula Vista street early Thursday morning.At around 12:30 a.m., a person called 911 to report a naked woman lying face down in the middle of the 200 block of Shasta Street, near Second Avenue.Responding police officers checked the woman and found she was not breathing and had no pulse.Despite CPR attempts, the woman -- described as Hispanic, in her 20s, and a Chula Vista resident -- was declared dead at the scene.Police told ABC 10News there was no immediate indication the woman was struck by a vehicle. On Friday, police identified the victim as 33-year-old Laura Rodriguez.Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak said, "It's very suspicious at this time. The manner of death is unknown. At this time, we don't know why this person was here and why they were left here in the roadway."Officers are questioning neighborhood residents as part of their investigation."It's a bit of a shock. This is a very quiet neighborhood ... About 20 minutes before she was found, I heard a vehicle revving up its engine and going around the corner," said neighbor Roger Murray.The Chula Vista Police Department is trying to locate witnesses or anyone with information regarding Rodriguez's death. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A close family friend is speaking out after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed at a Chula Vista birthday party while defending his friend. Devin Griffiths was stabbed at a birthday party on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista on January 31. Reid Schneider, a friend of the family, says the party was first advertised on the social media platform Snapchat. Schneider says there was a doorman at the party as well as security guards. Witnesses say an argument between Devin’s friend and another teenager escalated into a fight outside. Devin, who was not involved in the original fight, intervened to help his friend when he was stabbed. "They started hurting Devin’s friend. Devin jumped in and he was beat down pretty bad and stabbed a few times," Schneider said. "He had some severe brain damage. I guess he was considered dead on scene and they kind of brought him back."RELATED: 15-year-old stabbed, killed protecting friend at Chula Vista birthday partyDevin underwent at least five surgeries within the first 12 hours, according to Schneider. He died on February 16 after being taken off life support. "There was a lot of times where we thought there was hope and and unfortunately there was too much damage," Schneider added. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - UTC Aerospace Systems plans to wind down manufacturing at its Chula Vista aircraft plant beginning early next year, eliminating around 300 jobs, it was reported Friday.The company -- a division of Farmington, Connecticut-based conglomerate United Technologies -- said the decision stems from ending production of certain commercial aircraft models, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.The Chula Vista plant builds aerodynamic engine pods and mounts for customers such as Boeing and Airbus.UTC Aerospace plans to keep an after-market spare parts distribution, engineering test labs and administrative jobs in Chula Vista, according to the Union-Tribune."We remain committed to being in Chula Vista," Stacey MacNeil, vice president of communications for UTC Aerospace told the newspaper. "There will still be 1,500 jobs there. We are not shutting down the entire location."The closure of manufacturing, however, will end production of aircraft components at the plant, which has been building planes and supplying aircraft sub-systems since Fred Rohr founded Rohr Aircraft Co. in 1940, according to the Union-Tribune."We recognize the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, and will not begin the wind-down until 2019," the company said in a statement. "We expect the entire process to take place over a two-year period."The layoffs include about 265 sheet metal workers who are members of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, according to the Union-Tribune.
