SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scripps Research scientists have figured out how to reverse the desire to drink in alcohol-dependent rats. According to a news release, the researchers were able to use lasers to temporarily inactivate a specific circuit in the brain to reverse the behavior. “This discovery is exciting—it means we have another piece of the puzzle to explain the neural mechanism driving alcohol consumption,” says Olivier George PhD, an associate professor at Scripps Research and senior author of the new study.Though the discovery is exciting news for science, researchers say the treatment is far from ready for human use. George says he believes that the discovery will open the door to developing drug and gene therapies to treat alcohol addiction. “We need compounds that are specific to this neuronal circuitry,” George says. In the U.S., more than 15 million adults suffer from alcohol use disorder, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. 991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s violent crime rate fell in 2018 while the city’s overall crime rate rose. According to an early report from the Brennan Center for Justice, San Diego’s violent crime rate fell by 0.7 percent. Overall, however, crime is up. San Diego’s crime rate rose by 3.4 percent from 2017 to 2018. RELATED: City turns to community leaders to reduce crimeThe report looked at the Nation’s 30 largest cities. While San Diego’s overall crime rate was up, most other large cities saw a major reduction in crime. New York City saw a nearly 2 percent decrease in crime while Los Angeles saw a 3.3 percent reduction. Meanwhile, Chicago, a city known for its crime, saw a 9.5 percent increase in crime. In contrast, San Francisco saw a 9 percent decrease in crime. The budget also calls for the establishment of a new office of Equity and Racial Justice.Another million is earmarked for technological resources related to behavioral health services, including telehealth, electronic health record upgrades, outreach and engagement, workforce recruitment, and retention.The proposed spending plan is 9 million -- or 2.5% -- larger than the last fiscal year's budget.Residents can share their opinions on how they believe the money should be distributed on Monday at 9 a.m.There is another public meeting scheduled on August 12th at 5:30 p.m.County supervisors will vote on formally adopting the budget during their August 25th meeting.The public health crisis has pushed back a formal approval of the budget, which usually happens in June. 1136
