UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China supports for UN General Assembly to play an even greater role in handling international affairs, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday.Yang made the remarks in a meeting with UN General Assembly President Joseph Deiss at UN Headquarters on the sidelines of a high-level meeting on anti-poverty goals.The foreign minister voiced hope for the General Assembly to attach greater importance to development issues, proactively implement the outcomes of the UN high-level meeting, pay attention to the concerns of developing countries and further promote international development cooperation.On Monday morning, Yang also held separate meetings with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and the foreign ministers of Khazakstan, Indonesia and Switzerland.He told Mousa that China hopes for a stronger Sina-Arab strategic relationship of cooperation, and that China remains committed to supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people in seeking legitimate national interests.

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Monday called for international cooperation to deal with economic challenges and achieve common development.Li made the remarks at a seminar here marking the 30th anniversary of China's cooperation with the World Bank. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said China would advance practical cooperation with the European Union (EU) in all areas.Li made the remarks Friday when meeting with a delegation from the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED), which is the largest group in the European Parliament.China hopes the two sides work together to expand common interests, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, so as to promote the China-EU relationship in a maturer and more steady way, Li said during the meeting.Since the two sides forged diplomatic ties 35 years ago, China and the EU had scored leap-forward development in bilateral relationship, which was exerting more and more influence to the world peace and development, Li said.Noting inter-party contacts constitute an important part of China-EU relations, Li, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the CPC is willing to deepen dialogue and exchanges with the EPP-ED.Joseph Daul, chairman of the EPP-ED and also head of the delegation, said he is willing to cement inter-party exchanges with the CPC and push forward the EU-China relations.

  

URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. He visited rural households, schools, farms, a crude oil pipeline station at China-Kazakstan border, industrial zones, and army camps.

  

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Merchants Bank said Friday its profit rose 57.4 percent to 20.59 billion yuan (3.07 billion U.S. dollars) in the first three quarters from one year earlier.The jump in net profit was mainly due to higher interest income, the bank said in its business report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange.Also, total assets of the mid-sized lender had expanded to 2.36 trillion yuan by the end of September, up 14.10 percent from the end of 2009.Additionally, the bank's non-performing loan ratio was 0.64 percent, down 0.18 percentage points from the beginning of this year.Shares of the bank were down 2.41 percent at 14.57 yuan in Shanghai and down 1.13 percent at 21.95 HK dollars in Hong Kong Friday.
