BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's chief negotiator Ching Pin-kung hailed Wednesday significant progress on cross-Straits relations over the past year. The cross-Straits relations in 2008 have made several breakthroughs, said Chiang, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), at Wednesday's press conference. SEF and mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), the two main negotiation bodies, held their first meeting in Beijing last June after the talks were suspended for almost 10 years. The second meeting was held in Taiwan in November. The two sides reached six agreements after the two rounds of talks, including the historical direct links of transport, trade and post services which started on December 15. "With all these breakthroughs, the cross-Straits ties have turned to be normal and practical with mutual trust and understanding," Chiang said. Chiang said SEF would persist with building "positive" and "interactive" cross-Straits relations in the coming new year. The main topics in the next round of the talks between the mainland and Taiwan, scheduled for later this year, would include joint efforts on cracking down on crimes, financial cooperation and regular cross-Straits flights, Chiang said. Board members, supervisors and consultants in SEF planned to visit the mainland in 2009, according to Chiang.
BERLIN, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in the German capital Berlin late Wednesday for an official visit to the country. The premier is scheduled to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Vice Chancellor Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations and further cooperation between the two nations amid the global financial downturn. Upon his arrival, Wen said in a statement that currently Sino-German relations are faced with a sound opportunity of development. The two nations have maintained frequent high-level contacts, and economic and trade cooperation has been expanding steadily, Wen said. Both sides also witnessed fruitful dialogues on such fields as science and technology, education, culture, and youth exchanges, he noted. Bilateral consultation and coordination on international affairs have also been strengthened, he added. The premier expected his meeting with Merkel would further enhance mutual trust and broaden consensus between the two nations. Wen also expressed the belief that his visit will further push forward the Sino-German partnership, which bears a global responsibility. Meanwhile, the premier, on behalf of the Chinese people, extended Chinese lunar new year greetings and good wishes to the German people. During his two-day visit to Germany, Wen will also attend a forum on Sino-German economic and technical cooperation and deliver a speech. Germany is the second leg of Wen's European tour after Switzerland, where he attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The trip will also take him to the European Union headquarters, Spain and Britain.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday spoke over telephone with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern. The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago. They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful. President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship. In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted. Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation. The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency. On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip. China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C front row) talks to students at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, on Dec. 20, 2008. Wen arrived in the university's library and chatted with students there on Saturday after attending the closing ceremony of a year-long exchange program between Chinese and Japanese young people. BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged to university students that the government would seek to provide more jobs for graduates and "put the issue of graduate employment first." "Your difficulties are my difficulties, and if you are worried, I am more worried than you," Wen told the students at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Wen made the remarks in a surprise visit on Saturday afternoon after attending the closing ceremony a year-long exchange program between Chinese and Japanese young people together with former Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo. He said the country is in a difficult period as the global financial crisis has continued affecting the country's real economy. The government has begun measures to sustain the economy, such as the four-trillion-yuan stimulus package and interests cuts. "We are considering taking more measures at proper time. But currently we are most concerned about two issues, migrant workers returning home and employment for graduates," Wen said. The financial crisis and China's slowing economic growth has forced 4 million migrant workers to return to their rural homes, according to a report from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The report also said as of the end of this year, 1.5 million graduates are likely to have failed to find jobs, and the country could see an ever tougher employment situation in 2009 as there will be about 6.1 million seeking jobs. "We are also studying a package to guarantee jobs for graduates and it will kick in soon", Wen said. "The government will encourage major enterprises to increase recruits from graduates, seek more jobs in grassroots, offer opportunities of further study and skill training." Scientific research projects conducted by companies, institutions and universities should recruit graduates, and companies must not lay off graduates even if times are hard, he added. Wen reiterated "confidence", saying it is much more important than gold and currency.
BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or Cabinet, agreed in an executive meeting on Wednesday to speed up the reform and development of the inland Chongqing municipality. China has four municipalities: Beijing, Tianjin in the north, Shanghai in the east, and Chongqing in the southwest. "Local authorities are required to accelerate the overall development of rural and urban areas and promote environmental protection and natural resources conservation, to turn Chongqing into an important growth pole in western region," according to the meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao. Local governments should help people in the Three Gorges area to develop local pillar industries, modern agriculture and improve rural production and living conditions, according to the meeting. The city should also step up construction of a new district in its north and a newly-approved bonded zone and carry out regional economic cooperation.
