Investors were in a rotten mood Tuesday.Seemingly good results from Dow components Caterpillar, Coca-Cola and United Technologies didn't please Wall Street. The Dow closed down 425 points, or 1.7%, after opening with a 130-point gain. At its worst point of the day, the Dow was down more than 600 points.The Dow has fallen for the past five straight days — its longest losing streak in more than a year — and has given up its gains for the year.Why the nearly 650-point swing in the Dow in a matter of hours? Once investors took a closer look at the results, they focused on the negatives.Caterpillar, for example, warned that profit margins would probably not get any higher this year than they are now.And Coke investors were disappointed that lower prices may have helped drive sales -- even though Diet Coke finally returned to growth. Shares of Caterpillar plunged 6% while Coke's stock lost 2%.Verizon was one of the few companies that posted strong results Tuesday that didn't seem to have any caveats -- and it was rewarded for it. Shares of Verizon rose 2%.But other earnings reports were downright gloomy. 3M, another Dow component, lowered its outlook for the year. That sent its stock plunging 7%. Insurance company Travelers, also in the Dow, fell 3% after its earnings missed forecasts.All this negativity dragged down other old-school, classic industrial Dow companies too. "There is no rule that says rising rates are bad for the stock market."Mills added that since 1928, stocks have actually done a little bit better when rates have gone up. The market has gained about 11% on average during years that rates have gone up and 9% in years of falling rates.But jittery investors don't seem to care about historical market facts right now. (WXMI) — An 11-year-old girl in Ionia is spreading Christmas cheer and collecting gifts to give to children with long-term hospital stays.Over the past week, hundreds of boxes have been stacking up in 11 year-old Mchalie Walter’s garage.“The first time we got a ton of packages it made me really happy,” Mchalie said.Mchalie is overjoyed and she won’t even be the one opening the presents.RELATED: East County family's Santa treehouse helps families in needMchalie is collecting them for kids at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. (CNS) - Thousands of Irvine residents evacuated due to the Silverado Fire were returning home Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which injured two firefighters and has blackened 13,354 acres, and containment has increased from 5 to 25%, authorities said."Today, fire crews will reinforce existing controlled lines," a Cal Fire spokesman said. "With favorable weather, fire crews will find opportunities to establish more control lines."And so far, though more than 69,000 buildings were threatened by flames, none were destroyed.This follows a night of moderate fire behavior as red flag conditions -- high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation -- ended, according to the agency.According to Orange County Fire Authority's Steve Concialdi, who serves as spokesman for the Silverado Fire, residents in the following areas of Irvine were cleared to return:-- Residents south of Portola Parkway and west of the 133 Toll Road, as well as those east of the 133 Toll Road to Portola High School-- From north of Great Park Boulevard to Irvine Boulevard, including the commercial area west of Bake Parkway and south of Irvine Boulevard to Toledo Way-- South of Portola Parkway, east of the 133 Toll Road and west of AxisIrvine Boulevard between Axis and Alton Parkway remains closed, Concialdi said.The repopulation was a "testament to the hard work of all firefighters on the ground and in the air that have worked hard the past two days to protect life and property," Concialdi said, adding that no homes have been damaged or destroyed as a result of the Silverado Fire.At its height, 70,000 people were under evacuation orders in Irvine and another 9,500 evacuated in Lake Forest, according to the OCFA and Lake Forest officials. It’s not always what you teach, but rather how you teach.And at the University of California, Irvine, lecturer Thomas Eppel, Ph.D. is helping educate others for the digitally driven world.“I spend more time, or at least as much time, teaching online as I do in a traditional face-to-face format,” he said.Eppel is talking about is UCI’s Digital Learning Lab at the Paul Merage School of Business, a full-on production studio designed for remote learning which was built before COVID-19 forced campuses to close.“I always say the Paul Merage School of Business was maybe the most prepared school, certainly here on campus, when the pandemic hit,” Eppel said.He believes the digital learning lab offers three distinct advantages to traditional learning: convenience, flexibility and mastery.“To be able to watch a video over and over again and until you truly master the material, I think is another huge advantage of online education,” Eppel said.It's an academic advantage students say has helped them prepare for life post pandemic.“In terms of COVID, I think it did mean we were better prepared for what was happening,” said Sarah Kutner, an MBA candidate at UCI.Kutner has taken online classes at other schools before but says the DLL is online learning at a higher level.“I think it definitely has moved our transition because we already did have some focus on how can digital technology augment our learning experience,” she said.With more colleges transitioning to remote learning, a lot of them are reaching out to leaders at UCI, looking at ways they can improve their digital learning experiences.“We’re also able to help our sister schools here at UCI along with the central campus,” said Natalie Blair, UCI’s director of digital learning.She says with more schools investing in this kind of education, her staff is committed to helping others.“We’re definitely leading and if you stop learning you stop leading,” Blair said. “So, we’re always iterating and improving our methods.”Blair added that even though more students are now learning from a distance, this technology means that they’re not learning alone. 2130

It’s no secret we’re living in a very divisive time right now. It seems to be Democrats versus Republicans, or conservatives versus liberals. Whether it’s a family member or life partner, many of us are living with someone of an opposing viewpoint.In recent years, Jim Ryan has gotten used to playing pool by himself, but of course, he’d rather not play alone. He says in his old age he’s really appreciated having somebody else by his side.“I’m a widower and it’s nice to have a significant other that can help you out, and you can help them out,” Ryan said.Two and a half years ago, he met a new partner, but it didn’t take long to find out their political opinions were very different. He says he’s been a lifelong Democrat, and she’s a Republican. In a game of pool, if he were solids, she’d be stripes.“She said well, ‘Is that a dealbreaker since we’re opposite viewpoints?’ And I said 'Well, let me get back to you on that’ and we’ve been dating ever since,” Ryan said.Even though their feelings for each other are mutual, Ryan’s partner did not want to be identified in this story. He says she told him there’s too much tension between parties right now. Nonetheless, they have found a way to continue loving each other regardless of their political differences.“Politics, like religion, can be a game changer,” Couple's Counselor Ray Wynfield said.Ray Wynfield has been a couple’s counselor for nearly four decades. He says he offers advice to couples who politically disagree.“It’s a choice, people need to know it’s a choice. You can end a relationship over a church or religion, you can a relationship over politics – over Trump and Biden.”However, if you want to keep the peace between you and your significant other, or another family member, Wynfield says there’s a simple solution.“Don’t discuss it," Wynfield said. "Unless you can discuss it in a kind and respectful way where both people’s opinions and both people’s positions are respected.”Ryan says that’s something he often practices.“There are times where I have to bite my lip, and usually I’m the one that bites my lip,” Ryan said.According to Wynfield, if you and a loved one are struggling to get along in the midst of election season, you can work on skills to find peace between each other.“We need good communication skills, we need skills on how to be aware of our emotions, how to be aware of other people’s emotions,” Wynfield said.If you really do want to discuss politics, he says you shouldn’t react to another person’s views in a hateful way.“Even if you don’t like their candidate, even if you don’t respect their candidate, even if you think their candidate is evil, you don’t say that,” Wynfield said.In his 70 years of life, Ryan says he’s had civil conversations with people of opposing viewpoints. He’d like to see the same happen at the Capitol and all over the country.“I have a lot of friends that are lifelong Republicans and we get along just fine,” Ryan said.Above all else, Wynfield says we need to focus on the good our loving relationships bring us. He says there is so much more to each of us than our political affiliation.“What I hope people do in the next two weeks and after the election regardless of the results – that people can be kind and loving to each other and really appreciate the magic that they can have with a special friend,” Wynfield said. 3368
