HOUSTON (AP) — The Trump administration is detaining immigrant children as young as 1 in hotels before deporting them to their home countries. Documents obtained by The Associated Press show a private contractor hired by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is taking children to three Hampton Inns in Arizona and Texas under restrictive border policies implemented during the coronavirus pandemic. The hotels have been used nearly 200 times, while more than 10,000 beds for children sit empty at government shelters. Federal anti-trafficking laws and a two-decade-old court settlement that governs the treatment of migrant children require that most kids be sent to the shelters for eventual placement with family sponsors. But President Donald Trump’s administration is now immediately expelling people seeking asylum in the U.S., relying on a public health declaration to set aside those rules.Lawyers and advocates say housing unaccompanied migrant children in hotels exposes them to the risk of trauma as they’re detained in places not designed to hold them and cared for by contractors with unclear credentials. They are challenging the use of hotels as detention spaces under the Flores court settlement.Federal immigration authorities say the contractors caring for the kids are “non-law enforcement staff members trained to work with minors.”Hilton, which owns the Hampton Inn brand, said in a statement Tuesday that all three hotels were franchises and it believed rooms were booked directly with those owners. Hilton wouldn’t say how many rooms had been used to detain children or how much the rooms cost. 1628

I hope House Republicans will vote against the very weak National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which I will VETO. Must include a termination of Section 230 (for National Security purposes), preserve our National Monuments, & allow for 5G & troop reductions in foreign lands!— Donald J. If you're a night owl, you may want to consider spending your winters in northern Alaska.Utqiagvik, Alaska, formerly known as Barrow, experienced its last sunrise and sunset on Sunday for about two months. The town of about 4,000 people is now beginning its 65-day period of darkness, known as polar night.Polar night is a common term in places that don't experience sunrise for more than 24 hours, according to CNN meteorologist Judson Jones."This happens every year," Jones said. "If you live above the Arctic Circle, there will be a day when the sun sets for the rest of winter. The good news? It will return and then during the summer when it won't set for days."The northern third of Alaska lies above the Arctic Circle, the ring of latitude that encircles the frigid Arctic polar region.Although Utqiagvik is not the only Alaskan town to experience this phenomenon, it is the first one on the polar night location list because of how far north it is.For about one to two months, the residents of Kaktovik, Point Hope and Anaktuvuk Pass will also be without the sun. Their final sunsets will happen between late November and early December, according to CNN affiliate KTUU.The sun officially set at 1:43 p.m. Sunday in Utqiagvik, starting its 65-day hiatus from the town. It won't peek above the horizon again until January 23, 2019.The-CNN-Wire 1357

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested 115 San Diego and Imperial County, California residents in a three-day sting targeting federal immigration law violators, officials said Friday.Among the group were 50 convicted criminals and seven people who re-entered the United States after being deported. All but seven of the arrests took place in San Diego County, according to ICE.Those arrested include a Center Street Locos Gang member in Oceanside who had been deported four previous times. He had multiple criminal convictions including grand theft, controlled substance for sale, and driving under the influence.A Kazakhstan citizen wanted by authorities in that country on charges of tax evasion and embezzlement was taken into custody in Oceanside. Interpol had issued a ‘Red Notice’ arrest warrant for him in November.Another high-profile arrest included a Mexican citizen who had served a federal prison term in 2009 after being convicted of illegal re-entry after deportation.  Officials said he had three criminal convictions for spousal abuse and had previously been removed from the U.S. to Mexico on ten prior occasions.  RELATED: ICE arrests 150 in Northern California, blasts Oakland mayor over warningAn immigrant who illegally reenters the United States after having been previously removed faces a felony prison term of up to 20 years, according to ICE. Four of the people arrested in the sting will face federal criminal prosecution for illegal re-entry after deportation. Those who are not facing federal charges may be immediately removed from the United States.“This week’s operation targeted public safety threats, such as convicted criminal aliens, individuals with final orders of removal, those who illegally re-entered the country after being removed, and individuals who have otherwise violated our nation’s immigration law,” said Greg Archambeault, field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in San Diego. The three-day sting comes after a report in the Los Angeles Times indicating more immigrants with no criminal history were arrested by San Diego's Immigration and Customs Enforcement from October to December 2017 than anywhere else in the country. ICE officers arrested 1,622 people without criminal records, and 637 people with criminal records in San Diego during the first fiscal quarter of 2018, according to the LA Times.RELATED: San Diego murder suspect was undocument immigrant, sources sayICE said there are public safety targets who have not yet been arrested, including a Mexican citizen convicted of statutory rape and sex with a minor in 2012 and a known gang associate convicted of domestic violence in 2010. Both men had been previously removed from the U.S.In a news release, ICE officials cited California state laws that affect the way the agency operates. 2875
