My 100-square-meter house was flattened. My 2.5-hectares of cropland was destroyed," said Fu, a soybean and corn farmer at the Yaodianzi Village in Dunhua City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast China's Jilin Province.All the houses of the 286 families in the village were destroyed. Fu's family, including Fu, his 70-year-old father, his wife and son, along with their fellow villagers, now live in temporary tents in the local forest police headquarters in Dunhua. The forest police also provide meals for them.Floods have left 85 people dead and 66 missing in Jilin over the past two months, local authorities said Saturday.More than 5 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 1.5 million people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, almost 82,000 houses have collapsed and 198,000 others have been damaged, the statement said.Economic losses were estimated at 45 billion yuan (6.6 billion U.S.dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.Compounding the problems, more downpours were forecast to hit the province in the coming two days.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday denied claims in a U.S. government report, saying it exaggerated China's military strength."We firmly oppose this report," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a press release when asked to comment on the annual report by the U.S. Defense Department.She said the report exaggerated China's military strength, and unfairly blamed China for some problems that exist in the bilateral military relationship."China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is defensive in nature," Jiang said, noting that China is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."We urge the U.S side to respect this fact," she said.Jiang also urged the United States to stop issuing such reports on China's military, and work towards improving relations between the two militaries and the two nations, instead of working against China.

WUHAN/XI'AN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in two Chinese provinces traversed by the Hanjiang River, the largest branch of the swollen Yangtze River, issued fresh flood warnings Friday.The Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in central Hubei Province said areas along the Hanjiang River will face severe floods.Pressure is building at the Danjiangkou reservoir, which is already dealing with the worst flooding of the year so far.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 150.74 meters by Friday, about 1.74 meters above the warning line, and is expected to rise to 152 meters before the end of the month.Engineers at the reservoir more than doubled the flow rate of water from 1,920 cubic-meters per second to 5,000 cubic-meters per second.Along the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River in Shaanxi Province, floods and landslides had left at least 73 people dead and 121 missing as of Friday noon, the provincial government said.About 213,000 residents from 24 counties and districts in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in southern Shaanxi have been evacuated. More than 60,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.A new round of rainstorms began to pound the region Thursday. Between 20 to 80 millimeters of rain has fallen, raising water levels in the Hanjiang River.Authorities in Shaanxi have ordered disaster relief agencies and government departments evacuate flood-threatened residents as soon as possible.Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of 9:00 a.m. Friday.

TOKYO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- New Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa on Friday called for deepening of Sino-Japanese mutually beneficial strategic relations."In recent years the leaders of the two countries have created a conducive environment for the development of bilateral ties. I am very glad to see that," Niwa told Chinese press in Tokyo.Upon his assignment to China, the Japanese ambassador said China and Japan, as close neighbors, should deal with each other for the upcoming 1,000 or 2,000 years rather than 10 or 20 years. In the long run, both countries share a lot of common interests, and a stable, friendly relationship is the ultimate goal.The former president of Itochu Corp. said that he aimed to boost communication, strengthen economic cooperation, and build on the mutual trust between the leaders of the two countries.Niwa also said in the age of multipolarization, no one can conduct diplomacy with knowledge of China alone. So the relations with South Korea, and the United States are also important.Niwa was appointed by Prime Minister Naoto Kan in June to the key diplomatic post, making him the first ambassador to China from outside the government sector since the two countries normalized ties in 1972. BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.
