BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A U.S. judge says the IRS can't keep withholding coronavirus relief payments from incarcerated people, potentially clearing the way for at least 80,000 checks totaling more than 0 million to be sent to people behind bars in the United States. The ruling gives the IRS until Oct. 24 to reconsider the payments for those who were denied or had their money intercepted solely because of their incarceration. But for incarcerated people who didn't file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, another deadline is looming -- they have until Oct. 15 to apply for the checks. The IRS and Treasury Department have not yet decided whether to pursue an appeal. 669

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- A Brooklyn karaoke bar with over 280 people inside was shut down over COVID-19 violations early Sunday, according to the New York City Sheriff's Office.Authorities shut down Legend KTV karaoke bar in Borough Park around 2 a.m.About 281 people were inside the location, which exceeded Department of Building occupancy and had a vacate order from 2018, the NYC sheriff said. The location’s liquor license was also revoked in 2019.The venue had windowless, private party rooms with 25 to 30 people inside, according to a law enforcement source.Inside one of the rooms was a young child who was running back and forth between tables, according to the source. While 281 people were inside, authorities believe there were likely more people as about 40 dispersed when the sheriff’s office arrived, the source said.At least six people were arrested for offenses, including child endangerment, authorities said. This story was originally published by Cristian Benavides and Kristine Garcia at WPIX. 1013

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- New jailhouse pictures that appear to glorify and praise the man accused of murdering Boone County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Pickett have appeared on the internet."Outright despicable. It makes me sick to my stomach that this can reach social media," said Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen. The pictures show 21-year-old Anthony Baumgardt and his fellow inmates laughing and posing."He's not only celebrating with people in jail. I don't know if he is celebrating the crime, but it doesn't seem to bother him. That is what hurts me the most. That is what hurts people who have seen this," said Sheriff Nielsen. One image even describes Baumgardt as a "Hoosier Hero"."I don't like hearing that. It makes me uncomfortable. Because I don't know why anyone would call him a hero," said Sydnie Graves, Boone County resident."I'm kinda old school. It breaks my heart," said Mike Holt, Boone County resident.Baumgardt is behind bars in Hamilton County. According to the sheriff there, people visit inmates by video and they can share pictures with those they visit with."He has rights we have to honor like we have to honor with any other pre-trial inmate. We are gonna monitor the situation. Monitor Mr. Baumgardt's activities," said Hamilton County Sheriff Mike Bowen.Baumgardt's attorney, Allan Reid, told Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis, "It is not mature, respectful behavior considering the tragic circumstances of this case. And I will talk to him about it."Baumgardt is being held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail. His next pre-trial hearing is May 16.READ | Anthony Baumgardt: "No remorse" for what happened to Deputy Pickett, man he's accused of shooting | Father of deputy shooting suspect says it "was a monster" who shot Deputy Pickett?| Court records detail Deputy Pickett suspects' criminal history  1900

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — At least two protesters were struck by a vehicle Monday during a demonstration against racism in Bloomington. The incident happened around 9 p.m. Monday in the area of 6th and Walnut in Bloomington near the Monroe County Courthouse as the protest was wrapping up.Hundreds of people had been taking part in a rally and protest march through Bloomington in response to an alleged racist attack at nearby Lake Monroe over the weekend. In that incident, which was caught on video, several men attack and allegedly threatened to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Geoff Stewart was one of the two people struck by the vehicle during Monday's protest."A woman driving the vehicle came up to the stop and had started revving her engine toward us, and we tried to stop her and let her know that the crowd is clearing up," Stewart said. "But, she and her passenger both wanted to go right away, so they started to push. They pushed into the woman that was with me and when she pushed again both of us went on the vehicle."Stewart said when the driver started to accelerate, the woman he was with ended up on the hood of the vehicle, and he ended up hanging off the driver's side of the vehicle."I was just trying to block her vision so she would slow down, so I tried to pull myself as far in her way to obstruct her view," Stewart said. "She drove through red lights and made her turn up here that threw both of us off the car."One protester was transported to the hospital with injuries, and another was checked at the scene. The extent of their injuries is currently not known. This story was originally published by Cameron Ridle on WRTV in Indianapolis. 1704
