BOONE COUNTY, Ky. – Authorities in Kentucky are warning parents of a kidnapping scam. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says the ruse is commonly known as a “virtual kidnapping ransom scam,” and victims describe it as terrifying and very realistic. Two separate families reported that they received random phone calls from a foreign phone number on Monday and Tuesday. When the parents answered, they heard who they thought were their children saying, “They have me” and “I’m in a van,” according to the sheriff’s office.During the first incident, officers say the purported kidnapper told a father, “If you want to see your daughter again, follow my instructions.” He quickly disconnected the call and contacted his wife, who then confirmed that their daughter was safe and still at school. The second call reportedly included similar threats, along with additional demands. The sheriff’s office says the alleged kidnapper demanded, “All the money you have” and followed up with a threat, saying a mother's child would be killed if she hung up on him. While keeping the culprit on the phone, the mother was able to contact deputies who confirmed that her child was safe and still at school. If you or a loved one receives one of these calls, the sheriff’s office says it’s important to remain calm and immediately begin taking the steps to verify the whereabouts of your child.“It is also recommended for everyone to check their social media privacy settings and to verify what information can be viewed by the public on these accounts,” wrote the sheriff’s office. “This information could be used against you to make the scam seem more realistic.” 1656

As the United States discusses easing restrictions on commerce and government activity amid the spread of coronavirus, a recent spike in cases in Hong Kong shows the challenges of repoening society. In late February, the number of cases in Hong Kong was relatively stable. According to press releases from Hong Kong's government, the region had nearly 100 cases. At the end of the month, Hong Kong began easing restrictions and reopening government institutions. But in recent days, Hong Kong has been addreessing another wave of cases. In the last week, the number of cases in Hong Kong has doubled to 386, as of Tuesday. "The first wave was the worries of transmissions from Mainland (China), so we have put in a lot of measures," Hong Kong Executive Carrie Lam said. "You can see from the statistics that actually the last Mainland-related infection case happened a long time ago now - it's in February, early February. The second wave was the local transmissions, with those clusters arising from dinners and other things. Now we are facing the third wave."While many of the early cases were from travelers from Mainland China or other parts of the world, a number of recent cases have been reported with no known link to travel or related cases. 1263

At least 19 journalists have been arrested, 36 journalists shot at by police with projectiles, and 76 journalists have been assaulted during the period of May 28 through 31 while covering protests throughout the US. Those figures are according to research conducted by U.S. Freedom Tracker, which keeps a tally on incidents attacking the news media’s right to report. The group said on Monday that it generally documents 100 to 150 “press freedom violations” per year in the US. In just four days, that number is well over 100. The group said that it is still investigating a number of other incidents, and it is possible that figure could increase in the coming days. Of the 76 reported assaults on journalists, 80% were by police, either through physical encounters or being shot at. There have been a few notable incidents in recent days, including a group of CNN reporters getting arrested in Minneapolis on Friday; a Louisville TV journalist being shot at with projectiles by police; reporters from Fox News being attacked by protesters in DC; and an MSNBC reporter being attacked on Saturday. Adam Symson, the CEO of the E.W. Scripps Co., which is the parent company to this station, decried the assault on press freedoms in a memo to employees on Monday. “I am greatly alarmed at the violence and hostility targeting news media, by both police and protestors,” Symson said. “I want to acknowledge that this feels like a new and unexpected dynamic. The targeting of journalists is unacceptable and inexcusable, and we will defend our right to report the news.” 1578
