Some users feel that a respirator with an exhalation valve keeps the face cooler and reduces moisture build up inside the facepiece. However, respirators with exhalation valves should not be used in situations where a sterile field must be maintained…” according to the CDC’s website.Dr. Sala said testing has shown things like multiple layers of cotton fabric is better than a single layer, material of a higher thread count is more effective, and overall, “these studies emphasized the notion that if a mask doesn’t have a good fit (has gaps) its effectiveness is dramatically reduced.” Dr. Sala said even if the cloth mask is not ideal, it can still play a major role in preventing illness as more masks are worn by the population as a whole.Bottom line, choose a fabric face covering that fits and is comfortable around your ears or head, and keep it on while in public, especially when social distancing is not possible, to protect you and the people around you. 2864

Army Secretary Ryan D. McCarthy said Tuesday that he was suspending 14 leaders at Fort Hood after an internal investigation revealed "major flaws" in leadership at the Texas base.On Tuesday, McCarthy blamed leadership for allowing a culture that invited sexual assault against female soldiers to fester, saying the culture was "the direct result of leadership failures."McCarthy also said the Army would institute policy changes that he hopes to be in place by March 2021, adding that the internal investigation will "without a doubt will change the culture of the Army."Investigations into the alleged toxic leadership culture at Fort Hood began earlier this year with the disappearance of then-Pfc. Vanessa Guillen. She was last seen on the base on April 22 and was not seen until her remains were found at a nearby river in July.Hours after Guillen's remains were found, a suspect wanted in connection with her death died by suicide as police officers approached his car during a traffic stop. That soldier's estranged wife was later arrested in connection with Guillen's death.Guillen's family has maintained that prior to her death, she had been sexually assaulted by another soldier at the base. They also claim that she had been afraid to report the assault to her superior officers for fear of retribution.Weeks after her death, the Army said that while an investigation remained open, they had not found evidence that Guillen had been sexually assaulted.McCarthy did not make any specific statements regarding Guillen's case and the current status into the investigation into the assault allegations. However, he did say that Guillen's murder "shocked our conscience."Guillen's family held a press conference at the Fort on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.Speaking alongside Guillen's family, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said it is important for those aware of assaults to come forward."When a person is a victim, there no more powerful thing than love," Acevedo said. "I want to tell the community to come forward." Guillen's case wasn't the only sign of trouble at Fort Hood. Between January and late October, the Intercept reports that there were 28 deaths on the base, including five homicides and eight suicides.In October, The Intercept published a report that detailed fears of seven noncommissioned officers who said the culture at the base had grown so toxic that they feared for the safety of their soldiers.The report detailed rampant misconduct, including drug use, sexual assault and warning signs of suicide that were ignored by commanding officers.CNN reports that Fort Hood is home to 37,000 service members and has a total population of more than 60,000. 2682

Many Arizonans wonder if the state reopened too soon.From the moment casinos across the state opened their doors, thousands lined up to get through them. Now, the family of an employee at The Lone Butte Gila River Casino says reopening cost their father his life."It feels like a bad dream that I want to wake up from, but I can't," said Shawne Jackson, fighting through tears.Jackson is mourning the loss of her father, Robert Washington Jr. The patriarch of their family and her hero. The pain they feel now has influenced them to take a stand."I don't believe he was comfortable returning to work. He was very concerned," said Jackson.Washington was 68, a diabetic and had just recently beat prostate cancer.In May, when casinos were given the green light to open by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, Washington, a security guard for Gila River Casino Lone Butte in Chandler, was called back to work."He was tested prior to going back, and from what I understand, he tested negative," said Jackson.She says her father had a strong work ethic and financially needed to return to work. As someone with preexisting conditions, his family says he was told he could drive a golf cart around the perimeter of the casino and have limited interaction with customers. Still, they say he was posted at the door instead. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 five days later. Symptoms began appearing shortly after. He was hospitalized and later died on June 11.His relatives aren't the only ones to come forward regarding the safety inside Gila River casinos.KNXV has received multiple emails from other employees saying people continue to get sick and managers are keeping others in the dark regarding positive tests.Pointing out a cavalier attitude towards masks by customers, Jackson believes that starts at the top with the governor."They're looking to you to lead by example, and when you tell them that it's okay to not mask up, that's sad, that's a tragedy because you're putting innocent people in harm's way," said Jackson.However, just last Thursday, Gov. Ducey publicly said masks should be worn if social distancing is a problem, but did not mandate the use of them.Gila River instituted several precautions before opening, saying they would only operate at 50% capacity, provide masks and install Plexiglas barriers near slot machines. Jackson says she doesn't believe it's been strenuously enforced. American broadcaster Hugh Downs has died at the age of 99. The Downs family says Hugh died peacefully on Wednesday at his Scottsdale, Arizona home and was surrounded by family. Downs was born in Akron, Ohio on February 14, 1921.He had a career which spanned more than 60 years. Notably, Downs was a co-host on NBC's Today from 1962-1971, later he hosted 20/20 on ABC from 1978-1999 and announced for Tonight Starring Jack Paar.He also hosted the game show Concentration from 1958-1969.
