SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of 16-24 year olds looking for jobs is rising across the country, almost getting back to the level it was at before the recession.According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20.89 million teens and young adults had jobs in the summer of 2017. That made it the 7th straight year of employment growth in that industry.Similarly, the unemployment rate for people aged 16-24 fell for the 7th straight year. It was at 9.6%, the lowest it had been since 2000. While there still aren't as many teens and young adults working as there was in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, it's a sign that more are looking for, and finding jobs."I'm Saving for a Car"Like many of his peers, Coronado High School Junior Quinn Perez plans to work this summer. He already has a job lined up at Holland's Bicycles."I've worked there for about 2 years now and I've worked my wya up to one of the manager positions," Quinn says.His goal is simple, to save enough for a car."I've always been a fan of Camaros," he says, before adding, "But I'll probably go for a Honda or Jetta or something like that. A little more in my price range."Other students just like having their own money to spend, like Anna Hinz, who is still looking for a job for the summer."It makes me feel like I have a little control over everything I do, rather than my parents making plans for me.""It's all about the attitude"But for the people who do the hiring, why you're working can be as big of an indicator of success as anything.Patti Woods is the Talent Acquisition Supervisor for the YMCA. She oversees hiring of around 1,500 teens and young adults each summer to work as counselors and lifeguards.She says your attitude is as important as anything else."Skills can be learned," she says. "I want people who are positive, flexible and willing to take feedback."Woods advises teens and young adults to start their job search early. The YMCA does most of their summer hiring in the spring, because they have thousands of applicants to consider."Don't think you need to wait for the summer to find a summer job," she says. If you wait for summer, a lot of those jobs will be gone already."Woods says the Y still has some open positions. Other fields, like retail and restaurants still have lots of openings as well. A recent search of sites like jobs.com and Monster.com for the keywords "Teen Jobs, San Diego" turned up hundreds of jobs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is a memorial of candles, notes, and flowers along 4th Avenue near Main Street in Chula Vista.They are in memory of 23-year-old Christina Garcia, who was found dead at a nearby field on Aug. 5th. Chula Vista police say they were called out to 3100 block of Main Street after someone found her body. They say she had an apparent gunshot wound and opened a homicide case.“That afternoon, she wanted to see her daughter and pick up the truck, so it was a brief encounter,” her mother, Lisa Garcia, said. “I expected her to come back, and I wish I took advantage of that situation longer.”Lisa says Christina leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.“I think the saddest thing for me is that her daughter is only going to know her through pictures because she’s so young,” She said. “She’s never going to remember her mom’s touch, her kiss, her voice.”Lisa says her daughter was very likable and smart.“She tested out in the 10th grade and started southwestern college and finished her classes there,” Lisa said. She was also a skilled welder and liked working with her hands. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three six-month-old wallaby joeys are being hand-raised at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park before they are old enough to be welcomed into the park’s mob of wallabies.Photos released by the zoo show the wallaby joeys spending time in their pouches where the zoo says they are most comfortable.The wallaby joeys, which currently weigh between two and three pounds each, are being bottle-fed.Once fully grown, wallaby females can weigh between 26 to 35 pounds.The wallabies will join numerous other red-necked wallabies and gray kangaroos in an exhibit at the soon-to-open Walkabout Australia. 616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Association of Governments will debate Wednesday the best way to get people to the airport. Four possible plans involving public transportation are involved. One would create a central terminal on Navy property near Old Town and tunnel under the airport with a people mover. Two other proposals would involve a terminal, but use an elevated people mover. The fourth option would extend the trolley, adding tracks along Harbor Drive. Dorene Robertson said the predictability of public transportation would be a benefit. “I know the shuttle's not going to get in a car accident, I know I'm going to get here when I plan to get here, I'm not going to get stuck on the freeway and not get here. So it takes away the uncertainty of getting to the airport on time,” said Robertson. Alex Santos, who typically relies on Uber to reach the airport, says he would only use public transportation if it was direct. “If it was dropping me off in front of my house or a townhome I live in, or a block away, that'd be perfect.” The SANDAG plans would cost anywhere from .8 billion to .7 billion dollars. They would serve as many as 44,000 people per day by 2050 and decrease traffic on Harbor Drive as much as 35 percent. Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement that " I am stopping the use of the carotid restraint by my deputies effective immediately.""I have and always will listen to any feedback about the public safety services we provide. Working together, we can ensure San Diego remains the safety urban county in the nation," he added. San Diego Police Chief Nisleit said during a news conference that he would direct officers in a memo Tuesday to end the use of the carotid restraint procedure following a weekend of nationwide protests against police violence.“It’s the right thing to do for the community and it’s the right thing to do for our officers," Chief Nisleit said. “Some will say it’s taking away a tool, I say it’s adding a layer of protection."The announcement comes as thousands of people throughout San Diego County took to the street to protest the death of George Floyd. Following the announcement, the Oceanside Police Department said they would also end the use of the carotid restraint.
