NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for a man they say assaulted a New York City bus driver who asked him to put on a mask before boarding the Manhattan bus.According to the NYPD, the unidentified man attempted to get on the northbound New York City Transit Authority (MTA) bus near Madison Avenue and East 29th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday without a mandatory face covering.The bus driver, 62, stopped the man, telling him he had to put on a mask to ride the bus, police said.According to authorities, the man punched the bus driver in the face before fleeing the bus in an unknown direction.The victim suffered pain and swelling and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.Face coverings or masks are required on all MTA buses, subways and trains as the city continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.The NYPD has released the above surveillance images of the man for whom they're searching.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Rebecca Solomon on WPIX in New York City. 1022

NEW YORK CITY — For the second straight night, demonstrators rallied in support of a Staten Island bar that has been blatantly violating coronavirus restrictions despite the rising spread of the virus in the area.More than 100 protesters packed the area outside Mac's Public House on Wednesday night to support the bar that New York City Sheriff's deputies shut down on Tuesday.Demonstrators questioned the reasoning behind COVID-19 restrictions and were critical that certain businesses — like chain retail stores — were allowed to stay open while local bars have been shut down.On Tuesday, the New York Sheriff's Office initiated surveillance at Mac's Public House after receiving numerous complaints that the bar was violating state health orders that have shuttered indoor dining at restaurants and instituted a 10 p.m. curfew.Deputies said that a sign on the bar's window declares itself in an "autonomous zone."Authorities said plain-clothes deputies went in, were seated at an indoor table, and were able to order food and alcoholic beverages in exchange for a mandatory "donation" of .Deputies also say they saw other patrons also eating and drinking inside the bar.At 5:40 p.m., deputies entered the establishment through the unlocked front door and found 14 people inside the bar.The sheriff's office said the deputies issued appearance tickets to multiple employees, including a bartender and cook, for various violations of city and state laws.Co-owner and manager Daniel Presti was arrested for obstructing governmental administration when he refused to leave the business, officials said.Presti, 34, was taken to the sheriff's office, issued appearance tickets and released from custody, according to authorities.Following the arrest, about a dozen officers lined up in front of the bar, blocking patrons from entering.On Tuesday night, the sheriff's Office said a crowd of about 50 people showed up to protest the shutdown. Nine-year-old Jacob Thompson is your average kid. His obsessions include Minecraft and Legos, and he's a huge "Star Wars" fan.He's also a photographer, singer and comedian, according to his stepmother, Tara Artinyan. And most of all, he really, really loves penguins.But Jacob has Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, and doctors told his family in early October he probably only had a month to live.So they'll celebrate Christmas early this year, and Jacob wants people to celebrate with him by sending him cards, his mother, Michelle Simard told CNN."He got some cards from this Halloween, and he opened up and saw them and it was like getting a gift. He read it to us and had a big smile his face and his nose scrunched," Jacob's father, Roger Guay, told CNN in a phone interview. "He was excited to see what people had to say and it just brightened his day."Fighting a long battleJacob was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma when he was 5. According to the American Cancer Society, only half of children diagnosed with the disease reach the five-year survival mark.After Jacob was admitted to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on October 11, doctors discovered that the neuroblastoma had spread to his head and was incurable, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his mother."People have called him an old soul and I believe it because he has taught us so much about life and about people," said Guay. "He's accomplished everything that he needed to do by 9 years old, and a lot of people don't accomplish that, ever."An early ChristmasArtinyan said the family decided to "fast-forward" Christmas to give Jacob one last celebration.And for him, that means a lot of snow, a decked-out tree, and of course, a real-life Santa Claus.But before his improvised Christmas celebration takes place in early November, Jacob asked for cards from anyone around the world who wanted to share his Christmas spirit.And only five days after he announced his wish, he has already received more than 100 cards from people all over the country -- and even beyond."We got over a hundred, and they're from all over the world. NEW YORK (AP) — A 75-foot Norway spruce has arrived at New York City’s Rockefeller Center to serve as one of the world’s most famous Christmas trees. The tree was trucked in Saturday morning and lifted into place by a crane. The tree will be decorated over the coming weeks. It was donated by Al Dick of Daddy Al’s General Store in Oneonta in central New York. NBC says it's broadcasting the tree-lighting at 7 p.m. Dec. 2. No in-person spectators will be allowed this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. NEPHI, Utah – We all know teachers have incredibly tough jobs where they are asked to wear many hats. This year, amid the COVID pandemic, it will be a school year unlike any other.Schools in metropolitan areas are often the focus of media coverage, but teachers in rural parts of our country are facing the same problems.In the Juab School District in Nephi, Utah, the teachers are heading back to school. Classrooms are getting those finishing touches. Cleaning stations sit ready and desks are waiting to be filled.“It’s going to look a lot different than we’ve experienced in the past,” said Natalie Darrington, a math teacher in the Juab School District.Darrington is used to working with numbers. Smaller class sizes, plus fewer teachers, equals all sorts of fun interactions.“I know all the kids and I love seeing them in the grocery store” Darrington said. “I can’t go to the grocery store in my pajamas.”This year, the equation is not the same. Add in COVID-19, a pretty mean multiplier.“I don’t know how many students are going to show up,” Darrington said. “I don’t know how many students are going to elect to go online on any given day.”Like many districts across the country, students can choose how they learn this year.“The biggest struggle we face right now with COVID is getting support for the technology we need to be using,” said Juab School District Superintendent Kodey Huges.Even in a district with less than 3,000 students, Hughes said the hurdles are high.“The teachers can only do the great job they can do if they have the resources and the support to get out of the way so they can do it,” Hughes said.Enter small town ingenuity and hard work.This year, veteran teachers, like Mrs. Darrington, are becoming coaches to newer hires.“A lot of teachers leave the profession of teaching not because of money, but because we have to wear a lot of hats,” Darrington said.The hope is that together they can make it through this science experiment of a school year.“We’re just rolling with the punches here,” Darrington said with a laugh.The halls of Juab Junior High School will be a place where positive thinking is just as important as critical thinking.“My mantra this year is attitude,” Hughes said with a smile.As it is with any lifelong educator, there is always a lesson to be learned.“I know it’s stressful and overwhelming, but I feel like if we waste this opportunity to learn and to grow then it’s been all for not,” Darrington said. 2472
