NEW YORK (AP) — Americans held back on spending during the start of the holiday shopping season, a troubling sign for retailers and the state of the U.S. economy. U.S. retail sales fell a seasonally adjusted 1.1% in November, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. It was the biggest drop in seven months, and a steeper decline than Wall Street analysts had expected. The Commerce Department on Wednesday also revised October’s report, saying that retail sales fell 0.1% that month, instead of rising 0.3% as it previously reported. Retailers had tried to get people to shop early, with Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and others offering holiday deals in October. The report points to a weak start to the all-important holiday shopping season, which can usually account for a quarter or more of a retailer’s annual sales. Black Friday was also a bust. Typically one of the busiest shopping days of the season, shoppers mostly stayed home after health officials warned people not to shop in person, and retailers followed suit by putting their best deals online. Half as many people shopped inside stores this Black Friday than last year, according to retail data company Sensormatic Solutions.“It will take a miracle to keep retail sales positive in December,” said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at global financial group MUFG.It is also another sign that the pandemic is slowing the U.S. economy as stores face tighter restrictions and people stay away home. 1475

NEW ORLEANS — A fast-moving Zeta has weakened to a tropical storm as it barrels northeast after causing havoc along the Gulf Coast. The storm raged onshore Wednesday afternoon in the small village of Cocodrie in Louisiana as a strong Category 2 and then moved swiftly across the New Orleans area and into neighboring Mississippi. The National Hurricane Center says strong and damaging wind gusts will continue to spread well inland across portions of Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia on Thursday. This could cause widespread tree damage and power outages.Nearly 2 million homes were already without power across several southern states before dawn Thursday. According to the website PowerOutage.us, about 1.8 million are without power in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Georgia has the most with more than 800,000 in the dark.Officials have made a repeated call for residents to stay inside after the storm passed and not go outside in the dark to assess damage.Throughout Thursday, NHC says heavy rainfall is expected near and in advance of Zeta in portions of the central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic and lower to middle Ohio Valley. It may lead to flash, urban, small stream and isolated minor river flooding. At least two deaths have been blamed on the storm, one of which died from electrocution in New Orleans.Hundreds of schools canceled classes or planned to open late across from the Gulf Coast to the Carolinas. In the Mississippi city of Waveland, Mayor Mike Smith told WLOX-TV that he was expecting to see a lot of damage in the morning. In Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards was expected Thursday to tour the coastal regions hardest hit by the storm. 1687

NORTH PARK, Calif. (KGTV) - Business leaders in North Park say a little-used parking garage could help solve the debate over adding bike lanes to 30th street. The City, as part of its plan to reduce greenhouse gases, wants to install bike lanes along a nearly 2-mile stretch of 30th street, from Juniper to Howard.NORTH PARK, Calif. (KGTV) - Business leaders in North Park say a little-used parking garage could help solve the debate over adding bike lanes to 30th street. To do so, they would have to remove parking from the street. One plan would take away as many as 420 spots. That has residents and shop owners worried about the impact it would have on the area.RELATED: City could replace hundreds of parking spaces in North Park with bike lanesBut North Park Main Street, a local group representing businesses in the neighborhood, says the solution is hiding in plain sight. They point to a six-story parking garage as the answer. The garage, located along 30th Street, has room for 383 vehicles. According to a recent study, it's rarely ever more than 50% full. That means about 200 spots are going unused."I will watch people come into North Park and circle the parking garage looking for a parking spot, not knowing they're circling a place with 400 available ones," says Angela Landsberg, the Executive Director of North Park Main Street.Landsberg says the garage is often empty because there aren't enough signs letting people know it's there. She also says the only entrance, on 29th Street, makes it hard for people to access. She'd like to see the owners do more to promote it as an option for parking in the area."I think that people are not used to getting out and walking," she says. "The expectation is that we are going to pull up and have parking right next to the businesses that exist and that's not realistic looking forward."The garage charges an hour, with a daily maximum. It also charges flat rates during special events. Landsberg says it's just a matter of changing people's habits when they come to North Park."There are other communities that would kill to have a parking structure like this," she says.ACE Parking, who operates the garage, send the following statement to 10News:"ACE supports efforts by the City of San Diego and other cities to encourage alternative mobility options like cycling. Through our Mobility Solutions Division which was launched in 2018, ACE is providing solutions for clients like the City of San Diego to support local businesses while enabling initiatives like bicycle lanes. In this case, solutions to improve the utilization of North Park off-street facilities could include promoting off-street parking by communicating live space availability counts, enhancing on-street signage, enabling online reservation options, establishing convenient parking application options, and initiating fully integrated validation options. NEW ORLEANS, La. – A critically endangered western lowland gorilla is pregnant with her first baby at a New Orleans zoo.The Audubon Zoo made the announcement Monday, adding that it will be the first gorilla birth at the facility in 24 years. The expectant gorilla, 13-year-old Tumani, came to Audubon from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in 2017.The zoo says the pregnancy is the result of breeding between Tumani and Okpara, a 26-year-old silverback gorilla, who came to Audubon from Franklin Park Zoo in 2017.Tumani's birth window for the infant is July 15 through August 20 of this year, according to the zoo.Animal care staff are working with Tumani to prepare her to be comfortable with the possibility of staff assisting her with feeding or caring for the infant. Another gorilla at the zoo, Alafia, is also being trained in the event that she would need to help Tumani care for the infant or act as a foster mother.“We are working closely with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ gorilla birth plan to guarantee that Tumani and the infant are receiving the best prenatal care,” said Audubon Zoo’s Senior Veterinarian Dr. Robert MacLean. “There are many risks involved with gorilla births, especially in a troop unfamiliar with an infant, but we are working with the entire troop to ensure they are ready for the new addition.”The zoo says many gorilla populations have declined or disappeared over the past few decades. In particular, western lowland gorillas have been dubbed critically endangered, with a population decline of more than 80%, mainly due to illegal hunting, disease, habitat loss, and an increase in poaching. 1637
