SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Temperatures throughout San Diego County will warm slightly each day leading up to the arrival of a heat wave for Labor Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The agency issued an excessive heat watch that will be in effect from Friday morning through Monday evening in the western valleys, the mountains and the deserts. An excessive heat watch will also be in effect from Saturday morning through Monday evening in coastal areas.High pressure will strengthen over California throughout the week and begin ushering in the sweltering conditions on Friday, forecasters said. Monsoonal moisture is not expected to accompany the weekend heat, meaning it will not feel as muggy as recent heat waves.Temperatures in the deserts could reach 119 on Sunday and 118 on Monday, while highs in the western valleys are expected to top out at 109 on Saturday, forecasters said.High temperatures Wednesday are forecast to reach 76 degrees near the coast, 80 inland, 83 in the western valleys, 90 near the foothills, 94 in the mountains and 109 in the deserts. 1087

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley was added to the 30th annual list of the top 10 endangered landmarks and cultural landscapes in San Diego released Tuesday by the Save Our Heritage Organisation.SOHO called the facility -- known until recently as Qualcomm Stadium -- "one of the few mid-century designed, multi-purpose stadiums" to remain standing in the United States."Innovative design features include the pre-cast concrete, pre-wired light towers and spiral concrete pedestrian ramps," according to SOHO. "The novel form of the stadium -- eight concentric circles -- provides excellent sight lines."While current proposals for the site include knocking the stadium down, SOHO urged city leaders to adapt the structure for future uses like college football or soccer games.SOHO, which advocates for maintaining San Diego's historical buildings and sites, as well as unique architectural styles, also criticized the city for continuing to ignore Presidio Park, which it described as "a decaying and unkempt embarrassment," and Balboa Park, where many of the major buildings are behind in their maintenance needs.Others on the list are: 1166

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county's flu death toll inched closer to 70 last week, while lab-confirmed flu cases continued to decline, the county's Health and Human Services announced today. The county received one report of a flu-related death last week, a 74-year-old North County man who had additional medical issues. County health officials did not disclose whether he had received this flu season's vaccine. The county's flu death toll now sits at 68.The county confirmed 86 flu cases last week, down from 114 cases during the prior week. Confirmed flu cases have declined for six consecutive weeks since reaching a season-high of 692 in mid-March. County health officials have now confirmed 9,373 flu cases to date this season."Flu activity in the region continues to wane, but it is still elevated for this time of year,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. While flu season appears to be wrapping up, county health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. Residents also can call 211 or visit the county's immunization program website, sdiz.com, for a list of county locations administering free vaccines. 1518

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Convention Center will light its Sails Pavilion orange beginning at sundown tonight and Sunday in recognition of World Homeless Day, city officials said.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said millions of people around the world experience homelessness every day.``San Diego has made great strides over the past few years to invest in solutions that get people into safe, sanitary conditions and on a path to a permanent home,'' the mayor said. ``We continue to make progress during this pandemic with 600 people and counting getting housed through Operation Shelter to Home.''The convention center was turned into an emergency homeless shelter on April 1.``Our Sails Pavilion will shine orange for World Homeless Day to acknowledge the needs of people who experience homelessness and how different communities are responding,'' said Rip Rippetoe, CEO and president of the convention center.``Especially during this time when our most vulnerable San Diegans face COVID-19, we are grateful to our community for coming together and successfully implementing Operation Shelter to Home.''The first World Homeless Day was held a decade ago. 1172

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to amend an agreement between former Mayor Bob Filner and the developer Carmel Partners over the development of an apartment complex that drew criticism. The development's current owner, Trea Blvd63, LLC, sought to nullify the agreement, which required the development's owner to rent apartments to tenants by the room rather than by the bed. When it was being built in 2013, opponents of the apartment complex argued that it more closely resembled a dormitory rather than the luxury units it was billed as.``I applaud my council colleagues for correcting these corrupt mistakes of the past, and moving forward from Filner's blatant misuse of power,'' Sherman said. ``This is a good reminder that big problems happen when elected officials abuse the power of their office.''Carmel Partners began work on the CentrePoint apartment complex, located in Rolando, in 2013. The city ordered the stoppage of construction of the complex, citing the need for additional construction permits. According to City Councilman Scott Sherman's office, Filner also ordered San Diego's Development Services Department to not conduct inspections on the development's completed phases, keeping construction workers from continuing with the project. At the same time, the Rolando Community Council demanded that the CentrePoint project, and the developers of any other new projects in the area, pay for improvements to the neighborhood. The CentrePoint development offered to pay 0,000 for improvements.Then-City Councilwoman Marti Emerald, representing the area, suggested that the project needed additional changes regardless of the funding. CentrePoint subsequently sued the city in U.S. federal court, arguing that Filner, Emerald and the rest of the city government had illegally stanched the development. The city and CentrePoint eventually reached a settlement, in which the development's backers.Sherman framed the dispute as an overreach by Filner and called it a victory for property rights. Sherman was in his first year on the council at the time. The council voted 8-0 to amend the agreement, with City Councilwoman Dr. Jen Campbell absent. 2210
