(AP) — A man who gained internet fame as "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker" was sentenced to 57 years in prison Thursday for the beating death of a New Jersey man he had met in Times Square.Caleb McGillvary will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence under terms imposed in state Superior Court in Union County.The 30-year-old Alberta, Canada, native was convicted last month of killing 73-year-old lawyer Joseph Galfy at Galfy's New Jersey home in May 2013. Authorities said the two met in New York City and the defendant stayed at Galfy's home.McGillvary alleged he acted in self-defense following an attempted sexual assault. Prosecutors said his statements were inconsistent and also cited the victim's extensive injuries. Galfy was found beaten to death in his bedroom, wearing only his socks and underwear.Several days after Galfy's death, an employee at a Starbucks in Philadelphia recognized McGillvary, and he was arrested at a bus station.A few months before meeting Galfy, McGillvary gained a measure of fame after intervening in an attack on a California utility worker.In a TV interview viewed millions of times online, he described using a hatchet he was carrying to repeatedly hit a man who had struck the worker with his car, and also fend off a further attack on two women. 1321

Facebook has come under fire for a "barbaric use of technology" that allowed the sale of a child bride to be held on its site.An auction was held on the social media platform for a 16-year-old girl in South Sudan which sought payment for her hand in marriage.Facebook said the post was taken down as soon as the company learned of it, but that wasn't until after the girl was married.According to children's rights organization Plan International, the girl was bid on by five men, some of whom were reportedly high-ranking South Sudanese government officials.Activists are concerned that this auction -- for which the father reportedly received 500 cows, three cars and ,000 in exchange for his daughter -- could inspire other families to use social media sites to receive larger payments.Plan International's country director in South Sudan, George Otim, said: "That a girl could be sold for marriage on the world's biggest social networking site in this day and age is beyond belief."He added: "This barbaric use of technology is reminiscent of latter-day slave markets." 1084

ESCONDIDO, Cali. (KGTV) — A recently released video shows two burglars forcing their way into a hospice care nonprofit in Escondido.Jan Jones heads The Elizabeth Hospice. Its corporate offices sit on the third floor of an office building in the 500 block of La Terraza Blvd.  One day in July around 4 a.m., two people were recorded on surveillance video sneaking into the parking garage. Minutes later, they're at the main door of the nonprofit. One of the men tries the handle, but can't get in. Then they move onto another secure door, which requires a badge to open.Moments later, from a camera on the inside of the offices, the door is seen being yanked on over and over, before two men forced their way in.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodOne is wearing a hoodie. The other man is sporting a cap and a large backpack. They are seen going from room to room, raiding desks and shelves, and grabbing electronics. Then they split up and make their way out.  Among the items stolen are three laptops."No patient data, but they are used to provide the services we provide," said Jones.Also gone: A pricey camera used to make videos for critical training sessions."We care for people who are seriously ill, and we care for their families, and so anybody doing that would be heartless and should be brought to task. I think whoever did that has no soul," said Jones.The door the men damaged has been replaced by the landlord. The other damage is harder to undo. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 55-year-old man died Monday afternoon following a crash in Fallbrook, according to California Highway Patrol.The agency said the crash happened on East Mission Road west of Red Mountain Dam Drive around 1:16 p.m.CHP said a 47-year-old woman driving a Mustang drifted to the left into oncoming traffic, striking a Toyota Tacoma driven by the 55-year-old man.The driver of the Tacoma was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the Mustang was also taken to the hospital for major injuries, CHP said.Officers later determined that the driver of the Mustang was under the influence of a drug. She was arrested before being released into the care of Palomar Medical Center, CHP said.The crash is under investigation. 767
