While Congress takes its time, major brands are stepping up to help small businesses.“That grant helped us tremendously to kind of keep everybody, give everybody a level of comfort that the company was on a solid financial footing, at least for a couple of months,” said Rohan Freeman, owner of 7 Summits Construction.Freeman owns a small construction company in Hartford, Connecticut, which received a ,000 dollar grant from Lowe’s that kept them from having to lay people off.Monday, Lowe’s opened its grant application process for small businesses, again. It runs through Sunday. Lowe’s says it will give million in grants.“We're seeing the impact that, you know, us having the ability to stay afloat and stay in business, having the community and now some of our nonprofits and some of our smaller clients are moving forward with their projects,” said Freeman.“As soon as we get to 2021, the pandemic doesn't go away and small businesses don't pick up from where they left. We need to continue to support them and ensure their future viability online,” said Liz Austin with eBay.eBay has helped small businesses during the pandemic by giving another 0,000 to 50 small businesses in grants. You can apply for a grant from eBay through December 11. When it comes to car sales in California, the Golden State is looking to get a little greener.“Most of our shoppers are looking for a hybrid,” said Chris Wesney, general manager of McCarthy’s, an independent car dealership in San Luis Obispo, California.Wesney says his team sells about 75 vehicles a month with electric vehicles making up 20% of those sales.“That increases every year, year over year,” he said adding he expects that number to increase even more after California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent executive order, which would ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035.“There’s a lot to learn when it comes to buying electric cars,” Wesney said. “The problem that I foresee for some vehicles dealers is the repair facilities.”The state’s mandate has industry leaders shifting gears, and it’s raised questions inside Cuesta College’s automotive technology department.“To just simply say, ‘yes, we’re going to do this’ without looking at all other implications kind of makes me a little nervous,” said John Stokes, division chair of engineering and technology at Cuesta College.Stokes says he supports this decision to move away from fossil fuels in theory, but in reality, he’s questioning everything from how to replace gas taxes to adding enough related infrastructure.“There are so many things that are still question marks on how to be able to do this,” he said. “Do we have the production to satisfy the electricity? Do we have the production for the battery capacity?”Other auto industry leaders are also speaking out about this proposed change.“I certainly understand big, bold ideas but only when they’re affordable,” said Cathy Reheis-Boyd, president of Western States Petroleum Association.Reheis-Boyd says right now there are 736,000 electric vehicles in California compared to 36 million cars and trucks that run on gas and diesel. She believes that taking drivers’ choices away in 15 years could cost many Americans their jobs.“I hope we can change our mindsets that’s to collaborate and bring these brilliant minds so California does have a path,” she said.A path that leads drivers back to the car lot where dealers like Wesney are preparing for the fuel of the future.“It will just be interesting to see how the powergrade and everybody adjusts to the increase demand for electricity,” he said. 2334

WEST SENECA, N.Y. — This is a story of Western New Yorkers answering a call for help with no hesitation. Mike Dalessandro of West Seneca needs a kidney. All I could do was pray for these people because it was just insane," said Mike Dalessandro.Dalessandro is a father of three, a physics teacher at Williamsville East, a deacon at Queen of Heaven Parish, and a candidate for a kidney transplant. 543

With Georgia playing a key role in this year’s presidential election, Democrats in the state are reminding voters to check the status of their ballot before a 5 p.m. Friday deadline.Voters in Georgia have until then to “cure” their ballot as the state has a rule that allows people who have their ballot rejected for administrative reasons, such as forgetting a signature, to fix their ballot. Ballots not cured by 5 p.m. Friday are thrown out.Georgia is not the only state that allows for ballot curing. According to the National Association of State Legislatures, 18 states have rules that allow voters to correct errors such as signature discrepancies. While in some states, the deadline to fix such discrepancies has passed, in other states, voters have up to three weeks to fix their ballot depending on the state.Other close states that allow ballot curing include Nevada and Arizona. Nevada gives voters seven days to correct a signature discrepancy. Arizona gives voters five days to make a correction.Pennsylvania is a state that does not have a process for ballot curing. According to WPVI-TV, some counties allowed voters to cure their ballot, prompting a lawsuit from Republicans. According to WPVI, nearly 1,600 voters in Bucks County had their ballot rejected, many for not properly placing their ballot inside of the “secrecy envelope," as voters in Pennsylvania are required to place their ballot inside an unmarked envelope, which is placed inside a marked envelope. In most states that permit ballot curing, elections officials are to notify voters of the discrepancy immediately. But with thousands of ballots being counted, there are questions on whether election officials are able to reach all voters.Stacey Abrams, a prominent Georgia Democrat who had an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2018, launched a website “CheckMyBallot.net” which allows voters in key battleground states to check the status of their mail-in or provisional ballot. What voters aren’t able to do through vote curing is change their vote. 2040

What happens when the pandemic and flu season collide? The situation has doctors concerned.“You could possibly have both and we don’t know how bad it will be if you have both,” said Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and California state senator. “Many physicians and scientists are concerned because both of the viruses attack your lungs and heart.”California already had its first flu death this season and Pan is pleading with the public to get the flu shot this year. It's unknown how someone who had COVID-19 will react with the flu.“Even if they were asymptomatic, will the flu be a lot worse for somebody who already had COVID? Because of the damage COVID already did to the lungs and heart that perhaps the patient is not fully recovered from,” said Pan.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has ordered extra flu vaccines. They're widely available now and it's recommended you get one before the end of October.Normally, vaccine rates for the flu are around 40%. Pan says it should be double that.“If you have someone who is not vaccinated, then they're going to be much more likely to transmit that flu virus to the person that had COVID,” said Pan.Pan also says it's going to be difficult to figure out if you have the flu or COVID-19 or both, without testing.Make sure you isolate if you have any symptoms. You can spread both the flu and COVID-19 before you develop symptoms. It takes two weeks after the flu vaccine to develop antibodies. Some hope the U.S. flu season will be milder because of mask wearing, hand washing, and social distancing. Other counties have seen that. 1601
