Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Charlie Dent announced Tuesday he is resigning in the "coming weeks," a decision that came after he first said he'd be retiring at the end of his term in Congress.The moderate Republican tweeted the decision came after discussions with his family and "careful reflection.""I am especially proud of the work I have done to give voice to the sensible center in our country that is often overlooked or ignored," he said in the statement. "It is my intention to aggressively advocate for responsible governance and pragmatic solutions in the coming years."In a statement Tuesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, thanked Dent for his service."Charlie Dent is a voice of reason and civility that breaks through the chaos and partisanship of Washington and he will be missed," he said.The governor's office also announced that there will be a special election to fill Dent's seat, but no set date yet.The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's February order creating new congressional districts in the commonwealth beginning next term included language that, if there were to be a special congressional election before the new term next January, it would be held under the 2011 congressional district map.Already, 43 House Republicans have announced this cycle they are retiring, running for another office or resigning outright, including Dent and House Speaker Paul Ryan. Outdoor equipment retailer REI announced they are looking to sell their brand new corporate headquarters in Washington, as they embrace working from home and remote work options.“The dramatic events of 2020 have challenged us to reexamine and rethink every aspect of our business and many of the assumptions of the past. That includes where and how we work,” said REI President and CEO Eric Artz, in a video call with employees Wednesday. “As a result, our new experience of 'headquarters' will be very different than the one we imagined more than four years ago.”The company’s headquarters is being built in the Seattle area, in Bellevue, and is roughly 400,000 square feet and sits on eight acres of land. Corporate staff was planning on moving in to the newly-completed building this summer, according to the Seattle Times. REI transitioned to nearly 100 percent remote work in early March for corporate staff. Washington reported some of the earliest cases of coronavirus in the country.Retail stores closed in March across the country and recently reopened.The company admits the sale will also benefit them financially. PALA, Calif. (KGTV) – An Oceanside woman is dead and a man and 11-year-old are hospitalized after a vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76. The family of three, a father, mother and son, were traveling from Palomar Mountain back to their home in Oceanside.At about 6:13 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol received a call from San Diego Sheriff's Department about a vehicle that had veered off the roadway. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Oceanside, said he was unsure of his location and knocked unconscious in the crash, but that he was somewhere along SR-76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside. He also was not sure what time they went over the edge, but said they had been driving around 11 p.m. Thursday night, which means they could have been down there for close to eight hours. Both agencies dispatched crews to find the vehicle and using his cellphone location, were able to find the vehicle just after 6:30 a.m. south of SR-76 near Bodie Blvd. The vehicle, a Subaru carrying, was about 300 feet down a steep embankment near the roadway."He wasn’t even sure when the crash happened. He thought he left somewhere around 11 o’clock last night, heading home from Palomar Mountain to Oceanside, so he may have been out there all night," said CHP Public Information Officer Mark Latulippe.The right-front passenger, a 30-year-old woman, had died from her injuries in the crash. The driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center. An 11-year-old male who was in the right rear of the Subaru also received major injuries and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital.The driver and child are expected to recover.A small dog was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Animal control helped locate the dog after the crash.Investigators are not sure how long the vehicle had been there. They believe sometime overnight the Subaru was traveling on SR-76 near the Wilderness Gardens Preserve when for unknown reasons it left the roadway and overturned down the embankment. All three victims were ejected during the crash and found either partially or fully outside of the vehicle, CHP says.The names of those involved in the crash were not released. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash and everyone is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt. 2342
PHOENIX — Besides being our best friends, there are plenty of important jobs our dogs can be good at, like assisting people with disabilities, arson investigations and police work. But is there a way to find out what is on a dog's resume before they go through all of that expensive training? Researchers at the University of Arizona believe they may have found a solution. It is called the Canine Aptitude Test and it is in the early stages of development. The test is for adult dogs and looks to see if a dog's cognitive behavior will dictate where they would have more success as a working dog. "With assistance dogs that help people with disabilities, only about 50 percent of the dogs who begin training ultimately make it through," said Arizona Canine Cognition Center Director Evan MacLean. That means that major amounts of money are going to the dogs with no return on investment.For those who rely on these pets to live their lives, they are forced to wait sometimes up to two years or more."If that were any other kind of medical procedure it would be, we would think about this as a horrible thing," MacLean explained. "I need this operation and there's a two-year waiting list to get it. So, we would do something about that. So we want to do something about that with the dogs, too." Shelby Smith spoke to the University of Arizona on the impact an assistance dog has had on her life with a disability."Picasso to me is more than independence ... he's my best friend," Smith said. "He's someone I lean on ... depend on to get through daily challenges that comes with having a disability." MacLean said that stories like Smith's pushed him to really ramp up his research."For a long time, we've been interested in whether you can predict which dogs will become good working dogs based on aspects of their psychology or their cognition," MacLean said. Parents are facing tough decisions as the school year looms: Should they keep their children in school, or pull them and send them to a school that's already prepared for distance learning?K12 Inc. is the largest online education provider in the K through 12 space. They serve 30 states, with 6,000 teachers around the country and 120,000 students. Distance learning is what they do best, and these days, they're getting flooded.It's what Kevin Chavous, K12's President of Academics, says is "dramatic" increase in interest from parents. They've received thousands of applications since the spring."These are families that otherwise wouldn't consider a virtual option, but all of them say the same thing — they're so fearful about their kids' safety," Chavous said. "They're educated consumers, shopping around trying to figure out options."Most of the calls to K12 are coming from heavily-involved parents. They want to know the data; they want to know about the education, the structure, the sports, and the possibility of meetups."A lot of the data we look at shows that anywhere from 10% to 40% of the average public school parent says there's no way they'll send their kid back to the brick-and-mortar school they're going to — not because they have problems, but they're deathly afraid of the safety issue," Chavous said.Parents everywhere have questions, and they want answers. Chavous addressed the school's biggest selling point."Well, we've been doing it longer, and we do it better and we've refined what we do," he said.Nearly 500 of K12's teachers have enrolled in a Master's in Education in Online Instruction.It was a fast switch to online learning that jolted parents this past spring, and it's something that Southern California mom Christy Hartman doesn't want to do again."I can't do another semester of what we experienced last year," she said. "It was disjointed, she was a 5th grader and spent about 45 minutes a day (e-learning) — no live instruction from teachers at all."Hartman says she's decided that if her local school district continues full-time distance learning, she'll pull her child and send her to Sage Oak — a large regional charter school that offers personalized learning.Kids at Sage Oak meet in person once every 20 school days, and the rest is teacher-guided, teacher-supported instruction, led by parents at home.Sage Oak was prepared for the pandemic before it ever happened."We didn't have to make a ton of changes," said Chelsey Anema, the school's student services coordinator. "We did have to go virtual — which is unfortunate because we love and value the time we get to meet with students each month — but we are equipped with meeting virtually, so it wasn't a huge struggle for us."Anema says Sage Oak is getting between 50 and 60 new student applications a day. It's a demand they can't meet due to a new bill that caps school funding and enrollment in California.Parents have some choices to make. And K12 recommends that parents do their homework."Call all of us. Call the school district. Ask those questions, seek better answers," Chavous said. "This is a precious time for America as we go through this education reset and global reset, and we have to do it right. You only have one chance to educate your child." 3278
