LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s death count from the coronavirus has surpassed 15,000 even as the state saw widespread improvement in infection levels. A tally by Johns Hopkins University put California’s death toll at 15,026 on Sunday, the fourth highest in the country. New York has suffered by far the most deaths -- 33,081 -- followed New Jersey, which has about half as many. Texas is third. California has had the most confirmed virus cases in the country with about 775,000 but key indicators have fallen dramatically since a spike that started after Memorial Day weekend prompted statewide shutdowns of businesses. 630

In a statement Monday, hours after the crash, it said “the pilot of the downed F-15C Eagle from the 48th Fighter Wing has been located, and confirmed deceased.” "This is a tragic loss for the 48th Fighter Wing community, and our deepest condolences go out to the pilot's family and the 493rd Fighter Squadron," the statement said. The name of the pilot will not be released until all next of kin notifications have been made. 598
LOS ANGELES – A judge ruled Thursday that Starbucks and other coffee sellers in California must carry cancer warnings, according to the Associated Press. The decision comes after a lawsuit was filed by the nonprofit Council for Education and Research on Toxins that targeted several companies, including Starbucks and 7-Eleven, CNN previously reported. The lawsuit alleged that the companies “failed to provide clear and reasonable warning” that drinking coffee could expose people to acrylamide, which is created when coffee beans are roasted.Court documents filed by the nonprofit state that, under Proposition 65, businesses must warn people about the presence of agents that affect health. The coffee industry claimed that the acrylamide was present, but only in harmless levels. The industry also argued that they should be exempt because the chemical results naturally from the cooking process. In addition to paying fines, the lawsuit called for companies to post warnings about acrylamide with explanations about the risks of drinking coffee."I'm addicted to coffee, I confess, and I would like to be able to have mine without acrylamide," said Raphael Metzger, the attorney who represented the nonprofit."Coffee has been shown, over and over again, to be a healthy beverage. The US Government's own Dietary Guidelines state that coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle. This lawsuit simply confuses consumers, and has the potential to make a mockery of Prop 65 cancer warning at a time when the public needs clear and accurate information about health,” said Bill Murray, President and CEO of the National Coffee Association.Acrylamide was added to California’s carcinogen list in January of 1990. 1723
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Westfield Century City mall was evacuated Friday as police, firefighters and a bomb squad responded to a report of a manwith a gun and a fire inside a bookstore.Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the facility in the 10000 block of Santa Monica Boulevard at about 12:45 p.m., according to department spokesman Sgt. Barry Montgomery. When they arrived, people were streaming from the mall and they set about trying to locate the suspect, Montgomery said.A security guard informed officers he hadn't heard any gunshots or located any victims, according to the sergeant.``While proceeding with their search, officers were directed to a suspicious package located inside the Amazon store,'' he said. ``In an abundance of caution (an) LAPD bomb squad and (the) Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene.''At about 2 p.m., smoke was seen coming from the roof of the Amazon store. Fire sprinklers were activated inside the store, according to news reports. No injuries or shots fired had been reported as of 3 p.m., police said. People in parts of the mall were evacuated, but those in other areas of the large facility were advised to shelter in place while officers conducted a search, LAPD Officer Tony Im said.Paul Almond, a Century City attorney, told City News Service he was having lunch at Toscanova in the mall when the restaurant manager said police had ordered him to evacuate the restaurant. At that point the manager told diners and workers to leave immediately.Almond said he walked out of the mall and was joined on the sidewalk by numerous other shoppers and diners who had also been ordered out. He then went to a building housing a bank on the east side of Avenue of the Stars, across the street from the mall, and found that building too had been locked down.At the H&M clothing store, employees and shoppers were ushered into a basement area where they holed up for about two hours before the LAPD lifted the shelter-in-place order around 2:35 p.m.According to a broadcast report, a person described as a male in his late teens who had a gun was seen on a security camera, but there were no reports of any arrests. 2186
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress turned conservative commentator Stacey Dash ended her campaign for a Southern California congressional seat on Friday, about a month after it began. The "Clueless" star said in a statement on her website that she believed the bitterness in politics and the rigors of campaigning and holding office would be detrimental to her family.Dash, a Republican, faced long odds in the heavily Democratic 44th District, which includes part of Los Angeles, the city of Compton and other communities running south of downtown L.A.Republicans account for only about 10 percent of the voters in the district, which Hillary Clinton carried in the 2016 presidential election with 83 percent of the vote. There was no Republican on the ballot in the district's November 2016 House contest, which Democrat Nanette Barragan won.In her statement, Dash lamented a political system that "offers people on the lower end of the economic spectrum little more than symbolic gestures."Dash co-starred in the 1995 coming-of-age comedy film "Clueless." She worked as an on-air contributor at Fox News until 2016. 1116
