President Donald Trump will announce his decision on who to nominate to the Supreme Court on Saturday, and CNN and the New York Times reported Friday per their sources that Trump intends to nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the court.Trump's formal announcement comes at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.Barrett’s likely nomination will come just eight days following the death of liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who laid in state in the US Capitol on Friday.Barrett, 48, was previously confirmed by the US Senate to the federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in 2017. Her vote garnered the support of three Democrats, Joe Donnelly, Tim Kaine, and Joe Manchin. She is a disciple of Justice Antonin Scalia, serving as his clerk in 1998 and 1999. Given her conservative bona fides, she is expected to give the Supreme Court a clear conservative advantage, fueling hopes from the evangelical right to overturn Roe versus Wade, which has set the precedent for abortion cases for nearly five decades. Liberals say Barrett’s legal views are too heavily influenced by her religious beliefs and fear her ascent to the nation’s highest court could lead to a scaling back of hard-fought abortion rights. She also would replace the justice who is best-known for fighting for women’s rights and equality.Sen. Dianne Feinstein told Barrett her views suggested religious tenets could guide her thinking on the law, the California Democrat telling Barrett: “The conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you.”Barrett responded that her views had evolved and that she agreed judges shouldn’t “follow their personal convictions in the decision of a case, rather than what the law requires.”While two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, have said that a confirmation should not come so close to an election, enough Republican senators have said they would be supportive of Trump’s nominee to ensure a confirmation.Trump will likely become the first president to fill three Supreme Court vacancies in a single term since President Richard Nixon’s first term from 1969 through 1973.At just 48, Barrett would be the youngest justice and her tenure could last for decades. She’s made her mark in law primarily as an academic at the University of Notre Dame, where she began teaching at age 30. She first donned judges’ robes in 2017 after Trump nominated her to the 7th Circuit. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 2464

Protecting yourself from sickness has become a top priority for many people right now.Whether you're trying to steer clear of the novel coronavirus or germs in general, there are a few simple things families can do to keep their immunity in top form."First, it's important to remember that nothing you do is 100% guaranteed in preventing you from getting sick, but there are certain lifestyle changes you can make that can actually help your immune system react better when there are pathogenic invaders that would cause diseases," said SaVanna Shoemaker, a registered dietician with Healthline.Shoemaker and other experts overwhelmingly say getting enough sleep is number one."Making sure that you’re getting plenty of sleep,” said Shoemaker. Sleep and immunity are so deeply linked, so just getting adequate sleep can help you from getting sick as often.""When you have a disruptive sleep cycle and you're not getting good, adequate, restorative sleep, then our immune system takes a hit for that," said Joe Weydert, the Chair of Integrative Medicine at the American Academy of Pediatrics. She says younger children need nine to 11 hours of sleep, while teenagers could use eight to 10 hours. Also, watch out for stress. Consistent, high levels of stress can weaken your immune system."In these goofy times that we’re living in right now, we’re all experiencing high levels of stress. Kids may not say 'Oh mom, I’m stressed,' but they may manifest it by being more irritable or not sleeping well," said Weydert.Getting outside or prioritizing time to relax can help.Another major factor in keeping our immunity strong is our diet – eating rich, whole foods that are not processed. Probiotics can also help.As for supplements, "the thing you need to consider with supplements is there’s no guarantee. Now there are some supplements that some studies show may boost your immunity, but so far there’s no research in any supplement that shows it can prevent COVID-19," said Shoemaker.Vitamin D has a direct impact on our immune system, preferably straight from the sun. Elderberry is a supplement that's strongly recommended by many doctors for families, as it acts as a barrier to viruses."Other nutrients which I think are important are vitamin C and zinc. Those work together to help make what we call tight junctions in the epithelial cells. So, our epithelial cells need to be tight together so germs can't get through and vitamin C and zinc help maintain that tight junction with things," said Weydert. While supplements are certainly beneficial, experts advise getting the vitamins naturally through food. These tools are helpful in keeping your immune system at its best and a great addition to other safety measures like wearing a mask, washing your hands and social distancing as many do their best to avoid COVID-19. 2830

President-elect Joe Biden has picked an experienced but not widely known state regulator, Michael Regan of North Carolina, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Regan is head of North Carolina’s environmental agency. He was one of several contenders whose name emerged only in recent days. Biden’s pick was confirmed Thursday by a person familiar with the selection process who was not authorized the discuss the matter publicly before the official announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity.According to the Washington Post, if confirmed, Regan would be the first Black man to run the agency. 614

Quaker Oats, the parent company of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup, says it will completely rebrand the line — including changing the name and logo — saying the current brand is based on a "racial stereotype."“We acknowledge the brand has not progressed enough to appropriately reflect the confidence, warmth and dignity that we would like it to stand for today,” Kristin Kroepfl, vice president and chief marketing officer of Quaker Foods North America, said in a press release. “We are starting by removing the image and changing the name. We will continue the conversation by gathering diverse perspectives from both our organization and the Black community to further evolve the brand and make it one everyone can be proud to have in their pantry.”Bottles of syrup and boxes of pancake mix will no longer carry the image of Aunt Jemima beginning in the fourth quarter of 2020. A name change will be announced at a "later date." Quaker said the new name would "quickly follow the first phase of packaging changes."The press release did not indicate what plans the company had for the new brand.Aunt Jemima debuted in 1889 as the "world's first" ready pancake mix. For decades, the Aunt Jemima mascot drew on the "mammy" stereotype — a minstrel caricature of black women that reinforces slavery-era values like loyal servitude. The caricature is often represented as a heavy-set black woman with a handkerchief in her hair. The mascot evolved throughout the years, but it wasn't until 1989 that the brand redesigned Aunt Jemima to remove her handkerchief and add "pearl earrings and a lace collar" to give her a more "contemporary look."“We recognize Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype," Kroepfl said. "While work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough.”Aunt Jemima's rebrand comes as institutions across the U.S. hold conversations about race amid nationwide protests, calling justice for George Floyd. Floyd's death in police custody in Minneapolis on Memorial Day has prompted weeks-long, mostly peaceful protests in dozens of cities across the country against racism and police brutality. In its press release Tuesday, Quaker said that the Aunt Jemima brand would donate "a minimum of million over the next five years to create meaningful, ongoing support and engagement in the Black community." 2437
