BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Chi Jae Ryong, Ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to China, and held phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ROK Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Friday.They exchanged views on issues including the situation of the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement released Friday night by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.Yang said China gives utmost attention to the exchange of fire between the DPRK and the ROK which happened days ago, and is very concerned about the development of the situation.The DPRK and the ROK should exercise calm and restraint, engage in contacts as soon as possible, and solve problems through negotiations and dialogue, Yang said."The pressing task now is to put the situation under control and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents," he said.Parties related should actively work for peace and facilitate talks, jointly safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula while adopting responsible attitudes, Yang said.Parties involved should work together for an early restart of the six-party talks, and push forward denuclearization process of the Korean Peninsula, Yang said.The DPRK, the ROK and the U.S. sides elaborated on their views on the current situation, and expressed the importance they attached to China's stance and their willingness to maintain contacts with the Chinese side.The ROK and the DPRK exchanged artillery fire Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving four people dead.China on Friday also voiced its opposition to any military acts in its exclusive economic zone without permission, days before a joint military exercise between United States and ROK on the Yellow Sea."We hold a consistent and clear-cut stance on the issue. We oppose any party to take any military acts in our exclusive economic zone without permission," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement Friday.

BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for strengthening efforts in ecological and environmental protection as the country strives for economic restructuring and improving people's livelihoods.Li made the remarks Monday at a meeting on the application of research results on China's environment. KUNMING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Ten people were detained following a dispute between coal mine contractors which led to a deliberate explosion, killing nine people and injuring 48 others in southwestern Yunnan Province, local police said Sunday.The explosion occurred at around 9 a.m. Thursday at a temporary shed built by the Xiaosongdi coal mine in Luxi county of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, according to local officials.Most of the casualties, however, were said to be with Yuejin coal mine, which is at dispute with Xiaosongdi coal mine.Local police concluded based on preliminary investigations the explosion was created by people.According to local authorities, the contractors for Xiaosongdi mine and Yuejin coal mine, which are close to each other, reportedly had a dispute after the underground shaft of one mine broke through into the other.Further, a spokesman with the provincial land and resources bureau said Sunday that the bureau had been investigating the dispute between the two mines and had been helping with the negotiations prior to the explosion.Pan Mingzhou, manager of the Yuejin coal mine, said, "the two mines had no dispute at all before October, and the negotiations were going well under the supervision of the provincial land and resources bureau.""I have no idea of why the explosion happened," Pan noted.The detainees included Wang Jianfu, contractor of the Xiaosongdi coal mine, and Zheng Chunyun, owner of the Yuejin coal mine, said the local police.Both of the mines have an annual production capacity of 90,000 tonnes.

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed.As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. I believe Mexico will continue to keep the principles to try to get the results of balance at the Cancun Conference," he said.Su noted that the ministers will arrive in Cancun in the second week of the conference. He hopes the ministers can play an active role in promoting the progress of the conference.A 70-strong-member delegation of the Chinese government, headed by Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, is cooperating with other parties to seek a solution to global warming in Cancun.The Cancun talks, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, are aimed at finding solutions to global climate change. It has attracted about 25,000 participants from governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations and research institutions in nearly 200 countries.
