KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A new poll released after the Aug. 8 primary shows incumbent U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D – Missouri) in a tie with Republican Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley. It is a seat the Democrats need to hang onto to have any chance of gaining control of the U.S. Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a 51-49 advantage, with VP Mike Pence able to cast the tiebreaker. The poll, conducted Aug. 8-9 by Missouri Scout, shows the race tied, which is in line with a series of polls conducted in the race since this spring. Both candidates received 47 percent of the vote, with six percent of those polled saying they were undecided. The poll also asked respondents their thoughts on amending the state constitution to permit the use of medical marijuana, with 54 percent of respondents approving.Roughly 60 percent of respondents also said the state should increase its minimum wage to .60 per hour, with a stair-step increase of LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — Coast Boulevard in La Jolla was shut down Thursday, and will remain temporarily closed, as city crews began emergency construction to stabilize a nearby cave. The city closed Coast Blvd. late Thursday to begin an emergency project to stabilize Cook's Crack after geology experts discovered a zone of weakness in the cave, which is located underneath the street.During a press conference, crews said the concern is an outright collapse of the section of road over the cave. Currently, the weakness "is not a slow settlement" and could fail if erosion happens underneath the street. Much of the dense rock had eroded, and now sand and roots were showing through from underneath. As part of the project, sections of Cave St. and Coast Blvd. will be temporarily closed to traffic for about six weeks. The city said it will make accommodations for nearby residents and business affected by the closure.Officials said the discovery came as the city assessed repairs to Coast Blvd."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, said. "The busiest two weeks of summer, literally ... Obviously safety's the number one concern for any city, and we respect that." Heine said crews are allowing pedestrians to continue to walk through the area. The city called in crews from Texas, who drove in overnight to take over the project. Friday, the crews began drilling into the street above to locate some of the weakest points. Eco-friendly polyurethane will be used to shore up those weak points, crews say.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store. The section of coastline is populated by several small caves that tourists can explore through an entrance in The Cave Store or kayaking nearby. The section of Coast Blvd. over the cave is a popular route to visit the cove and coastline, as well as restaurants that dot the street. 1954.85 per year to per hour by 2023.The poll was conducted by TJP Strategies, a Democratic consulting firm, on behalf of Missouri Scout, with 1,785 likely 2018 general election votes and a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.Missouri is not the only traditionally red state that Democrats hold a US Senate seat in. The seats in North Dakota, Indiana and West Virginia could also be turnovers from the Democrats to the Republicans. For the Democrats to regain control of the Senate, not only would it need to hold on in traditionally red states, but also take two seats from the Republicans. The two best possibilities for the Democrats to make gains in the Senate are in Arizona and Nevada.  1692

Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearings concluded Thursday with the Senate Judiciary Committee setting a full Senate vote to seat her on the Supreme Court on Oct. 22.Should more than half of Senators vote to confirm Barrett next week — and the Republican-controlled Senate appears to have the votes to do so — there will be time to seat the judge on the Supreme Court ahead of the 2020 election on Nov. 3.Democrats attempts to delay the vote reached a peak on Thursday, as Democratic senators on the committee opened the Thursday by filing motions to push back a committee vote.Thursday's portion of the hearing opened with only one Democrat — Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois — in the room. Durbin argued that a quorum was not present and that the hearing should be delayed. The Republican-controlled committee quickly voted to change the rules to proceed with the hearing and set the date for a vote on Barrett's confirmation for Oct. 22.Following that vote, Democratic committee members called for motions to delay a vote on Barrett's confirmation. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, called the process "rushed," and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota called it a "sham." Republicans, like Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, offered a defense of the proceedings, saying they were within historical precedent.Graham allowed all lawmakers who wish to speak on the proposed motions to delay a vote will have the opportunity to do so, but added that he "hated it" for the witnesses who were scheduled to speak at the hearing later on Thursday. Witness testimony did not begin until nearly two hours after they were originally scheduled to start. The witnesses are to speak to Barrett's character before committee members give their closing statements. They include apolitical experts from the American Bar Association and the Federal Judiciary, as well as witnesses called by both Democrats and Republicans.Witnesses from the American Bar Association said they deemed Barrett qualified to serve on the Supreme Court, basing their decision solely on her judicial acumen.Witnesses called by Democrats argued that Barrett's nomination threatens several precedents, like legal abortion, public healthcare and LGBGTQ+ rights. Witnesses called by Republicans spoke to Barrett's personal character and her reputation as a "textualist" and "Constitutional originalist."Barrett was present at the hearing for any part of Thursday's hearings.Throughout her two days of questioning, Barrett attempted to mostly avoid sharing her views on hotly-debated judicial topics like abortion and public healthcare. However, President Donald Trump has said in the past that he would only nominate a judge to the court who would work to overrule the Affordable Care Act and abortion protections provided in Roe v. Wade, and Barrett's past opinions make it clear that she fits those qualifications. Graham himself lauded Barrett as an "unabashedly pro-life" and "conservative" woman during Wednesday's hearing. 3001

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — An unknown man assaulted actor Arnold Schwarzenegger during a public appearance in South Africa on Saturday, but the 71-year-old appeared to quickly recover and say "I'm just glad the idiot didn't interrupt my Snapchat."Video shows the former California governor standing and filming children at a sporting event in Johannesburg when a man makes a flying kick into his back. Schwarzenegger stumbles forward. The man is quickly grabbed by security. Off camera a man shouts several times "Help me!"The video shortly afterward shows Schwarzenegger smiling and shaking hands with bystanders but then walking out ringed by security.Schwarzenegger later posted on Twitter: "Thanks for your concerns, but there is nothing to worry about. I thought I was just jostled by the crowd, which happens a lot. I only realized I was kicked when I saw the video like all of you. I'm just glad the idiot didn't interrupt my Snapchat."He had been attending his Arnold Classic Africa event, which features dozens of sports and fitness activities. In a separate Twitter post, the event blamed a "crazed fan" for the assault. The statement cited organizer Wayne Price as saying the assailant was "known to the police for orchestrating similar incidents in the past" and that Schwarzenegger was "fine and still in good spirits."The actor confirmed he had no intention of laying charges and would continue with another appearance on Sunday as planned, the statement said. 1474

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A potentially flammable sea flare washed ashore at La Jolla Shores Tuesday, leading to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad investigation.A person who was walking on the beach near Kellogg Park found the flare canister and took it to the lifeguard station. The witness did not notify lifeguards, who found it about 3 p.m.Lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky said the flare had not been detonated and still posed a danger, despite the presence of water in the canister. The device appears to be similar to an MK 58 Mod 1 marine location marker. An online description indicates the marker is designed to be a smoke and flames reference-point marker on the ocean’s surface. It is used for antisubmarine warfare, search-and-rescue operations, man-overboard markings, and as a target for practice bombings. The bomb squad reached out to the military Tuesday for guidance in the emergency. Troops from MCAS Miramar were called to the scene to investigate. Shortly after 8 p.m. Marines had removed the device and cleared the scene. There were no reports of injuries. 1089
