Gregory and Nina Barta were on vacation when they saw surveillance video of three people allegedly stealing from their home in Romulus, Michigan. Two of the suspects are complete strangers, but the third is their own 17-year-old son.The Bartas said that their son has had issues with truancy and incorrigibility but nothing like this. "It was devastating to see our own son carrying our belongings out of our house," said Gregory Barta. "It's very troubling but also very scary because we have daughters. What would have happened if they were home?"The couple immediately notified Romulus Police. Captain Joshua Monte said they are investigating and that the three suspects could face charges of home invasion and receiving and concealing stolen property. "You feel helpless," Nina Barta said.The couple's son had been living at home, but after the alleged burglary Monday afternoon, he didn't return. They tried to reach him through social media because he doesn't have a cell phone."Nothing he took was his. Everything was ours," said Gregory Barta. The items stolen include the couple's computer, jewelry, tools, televisions, and three firearms that were in a safe. Wednesday afternoon, Action News learned that police had taken the couple's son into custody. It's possible he saw his mother's Facebook post because he went to a store in Garden City where police said he told a worker that Romulus Police were looking for him. Garden City detained the teen for Romulus Police.Police said some of the stolen items were recovered, but not the guns.Captain Monte said investigators are still trying to identify and locate the two other suspects seen on surveillance video. Facebook says it has removed nearly 200 social media accounts linked to white supremacy groups planning to rally members to show up at protests over police killings of black people - in some cases with weapons. The Facebook and Instagram users were associated with the Proud Boys and American Guard, two racist groups already banned on Facebook. Facebook officials said Friday the platform was already planning to remove the accounts for violating its ban on hate groups but decided to act when the groups attempted to exploit the protests prompted by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  611

Governor Bill Haslam has granted executive clemency to Cyntoia Brown by commuting her life sentence. The governor's office announced the decision Monday morning. She will be released to parole supervision on August 7, 2019, after serving 15 years in prison.Watch live: Brown's attorneys speak after Governor Haslam grants clemency“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life. Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.”As part of her parole, she cannot violate any state or federal laws and will be subject to a release plan approved by the Tennessee Department of Correction and special supervision conditions, including employment, education, counseling, and community engagement requirements. Brown's parole supervision will continue until August 7, 2029, at which point her sentence will expire. In 2006, she was convicted of first-degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery in the killing of Antioch realtor Johnny Allen. She was sentenced to life in prison. At the time of the crime, she was 16-years-old.Advocates have said that Brown, now 30, was a victim of sex trafficking and shot the 43-year-old in self-defense. Many doubt the justice of our country, and with good reason. Black people see the repeated violation of their rights without an urgent and adequate response from American institutions. We know that lasting justice will only come by peaceful means. Looting is not liberation, and destruction is not progress. But we also know that lasting peace in our communities requires truly equal justice. The rule of law ultimately depends on the fairness and legitimacy of the legal system. And achieving justice for all is the duty of all.This will require a consistent, courageous, and creative effort. We serve our neighbors best when we try to understand their experience. We love our neighbors as ourselves when we treat them as equals, in both protection and compassion. There is a better way — the way of empathy, and shared commitment, and bold action, and a peace rooted in justice. I am confident that together, Americans will choose the better way. 3934
