Have you ever considered traveling alone? It can be intimidating, especially as you get older. But Leyla Alyanak, who is in her 60s, says she prefers it. “Ninety percent of the time I travel on my own, and I love it," Alyanak says. She's traveled all over the world, from Kyrgyzstan and South Korea, all by herself. Alyanak took her first solo trip when she was just 15 years old. One of her favorite perks of traveling alone is the freedom. "The freedom to decide what I want to do, when I want to do," she says. While being adventurous is exhilarating, Alyanak says there are some downsides to traveling solo.First, it can be expensive. Because you’re alone, you don’t have someone to split the costs of lodging and other exposes. Secondly, there are times were a solo traveler can experience loneliness. However, Alyanak says traveling solo does force you to meet new people. Then, there’s the issue of safety. "Yes, there is a little bit more of vulnerability but nothing you can't prepare yourself against,” she says. “All you have to do is expect things are going to be like that you just need to be a little bit more careful and watchful." If traveling solo sounds fun but you're still unsure, Alyanak recommends planning a solo trip close to where you live. When you’re ready to go abroad, choose a country where English is prevalent, like Canada, England and Ireland. "Then, they should embrace a country where the tourist infrastructure is really good, but at the same time, the language is different,” Alyanak recommends. “But enough people do speak English in places like Mexico, Italy, Spain." Once you're feeling really adventurous, try a place with a language barrier. Alyanak says your saving grace will be the smartphone app Google Translator. "Going to a country where you don't speak the language or any of the languages, that can be a little unsettling, so I’m really glad I had the app with me. It made all the difference." She says all her experiences while traveling solo has given her a newfound confidence. "Take it easy,” she says. “Take baby steps. Start small and just relish the freedom that you are going to have all on your own." Alyanak blogs about her solo adventures and gives tips to those who are thinking about traveling alone on her website 2298

Hurricane Dorian has parked itself next to Grand Bahama Island, with heavy rain and damaging winds forcing those on the island to remain in shelter, Monday evening. According to the National Hurricane Center, Dorian had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph as of 11 p.m. ET, which has fallen since making landfall in the Bahamas on Sunday evening.According to the 11 p.m. Monday update from the National Hurricane Center, the eye of Category 4 Hurricane Dorian is creating life-threatening storm surge and catastrophic winds over Grand Bahama Island. The hurricane is expected to drift westward or west-northwestward over the next 24 hours, which will cause a prolonged period of devastating winds and storm surge over Grand Bahama Island, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center. The center says by late Tuesday, a weakness in a ridge becomes more pronounced and Dorian should turn northwestward near the east coast of Florida. By Tuesday, the hurricane is expected to make a northeastward turn ahead of a broad mid-latitude trough. The hurricane center says a small change to the left of the NHC forecast could bring the core of the extremely dangerous hurricane onshore of the Florida east coast within the hurricane warning area. In addition, Dorian's wind field is predicted to expand, which would bring hurricane-force winds closer to the east coast of Florida even if the track does change.Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles.Swells will begin affect the east-facing shores of the Bahamas, the Florida east coast, and the southeastern United States coast during the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. 1791

Graduation day is a huge milestone, but this year, many students around the country won’t experience it. Amid a COVID-19 outbreak, many schools are canceling their commencement ceremonies. After four hard years of college, University of Colorado-Boulder senior Drake Olson won’t get to walk with his fellow seniors for graduation. He's just one of the many seniors across the nation that may not take part in a graduation ceremony. “A lot of my friends from out of state they have moved back home already to do online classes, so now, it’s kind of like I never got to say goodbye,” he said. What should be a time filled with joy and excitement is now a mixed bag of emotions for both Olson and his parents.Olson’s mother, Becky Olson-Kahn, feels sadness and relief for her son.“I think this is very scary time, and I really agree with the decision,” she expressed.Like many parents this spring, she won’t get the chance to watch her first-born son walk up on stage and receive his diploma.“We’re grateful he’s actually able to graduate and a way for him to complete college,” she said. “We are focused on that, but I do hope later in the summer we can have friends and family come over to celebrate.”As for what’s next for Olson and his graduating class, the university mentioned possibly postponing commencement. The college is considering including summer 2020’s class to walk in winter 2020’s graduation. 1418
