PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway reopened to visitors Monday after storm damage that closed the popular attraction for almost two months. The Valentine’s Day storm severed the power feed to the mountain and washed out a road, according to tram officials. Crews spent weeks making necessary repairs and cleaning up damage. The closure kept 100,000 visitors away, tram officials estimate. The storm led to almost million in repair costs and lost revenues. “It’s been a long six weeks for everyone, but today we are delighted to finally welcome back Tram visitors. On behalf of the entire Tramway staff, we are thrilled to be back open for business and truly appreciate the community’s support throughout our closure,” said Tramway General Manager Nancy Nichols. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which is the world’s largest rotating tram car, opened in 1963. Its 80-passenger cars take travelers from the desert floor to the Mountain Station at an elevation of 8,516 feet in 10 minutes. Visitors can enjoy two restaurants, a natural history museum, documentary theaters, and hiking trails at the top. The tram opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. And it got to the point where I was tired of burying brothers.”Those feelings are not unusual for veterans. The VA says more than 1.7 million veterans get treatment for mental health each year.Enter the non-profit Pets For Patriots.“Very simply, Pets For Patriots seeks to give veterans a new pet friend, while saving the most overlooked, undervalued shelter dogs and cats around the country,” said Beth Zimmerman, who founded the nonprofit.Zimmerman said the organization works to help veterans heal emotionally while helping pets in need do the same.“There were two different populations--veterans and shelter animals--that had different, but very complementary needs,” she said. “And if I could find a way to bring them together in a really intelligent way and an innovative way, that it would help both of them.”In the 10 years since Pets For Patriots began, the program has paired together nearly 3,000 veterans with shelter pets around the country. Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl at a hotel in Wickliffe, Ohio on Friday night.The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at the Econo Lodge Wickliffe-Cleveland East, 28611 Euclid Ave. Police said it appears the child's mother was handling a gun when it went off and the 2-year-old girl was shot in the chest.The mother initially told the 911 operator the gun's safety was off, but a few seconds later said the safety was on when she dropped the weapon."The safety was on when I dropped the gun and the bullet shot her. The gun dropped, I dropped my gun," the mother told the 911 operator. "She's gone. My baby's gone. She's not breathing at all. She's gone."The child was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from the injury, according to authorities.Police said the shooting appears to be accidental. The mother had the weapon legally and had a concealed carry permit. It will be left up to the Lake County Crime Lab and the prosecutor's office to determine if any charges are filed, police said. 1062
