SAN DIEGO, California — One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family. He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk. He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife. The couple has four children, one with special needs. As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship. They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house. The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey. She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong. It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help. She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. "It really hits home that everyone really does just care and sees how much he has sacrificed for our country."Fish says many have already stepped up to help with the house but that they may still need a sliding door and fence. Those wanting to help the Stacy family can also donate to their Go Fund Me page.  1885

San Diego shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has notified nearly 1,500 workers that they could be out of a job next month. The shipbuilder, however, says it anticipates letting go of closer to 350 workers. NASSCO says the layoffs are related to a dry dock accident in July that caused damaged to its facilities, although the workers union president says other factors are at play.“We are pursuing all available options to avoid or lessen the impact of these reductions and hope to increase our workforce as soon as possible to support work expected in 2019,” NASSCO president Kevin Graney said in a layoff notice to the state. RELATED: San Diego dry dock floods following barrier collapseThe list of jobs impacted includes 129 welders, 85 electricians, 84 painters and 82 pipe fitters.  Robert Godinez, who heads the Boilermakers Union Local 1998, said the number of potential layoffs is high because NASSCO uses an evaluation system to guide which workers it lays off. Those with the lowest evaluation are out first, and that can change with training.Godinez said he expects the layoffs to last about four to six months until NASSCO can fix its dry dock.  "If they lay off 400, 500, 600, 700, that should cover that notification requirement," he said. The layoffs come after NASSCO held a large hiring fair in April, as it looked to add 800 to 1,000 new welders and shipbuilders. However, Godinez said the shipbuilder did not hire even close to that number. He said Navy repair work fizzled and that a construction project got set back. Additionally, a union newsletter mailed before the accident reported 48 workers had been laid off  - a number too low to trigger a WARN public notice.  “People weren't ready for this, they weren't ready for the layoff,” Godinez said. “They were walking into the shipyard, they were watching these humongous banners that they’re going to be hiring like crazy and everyone’s on the upswing, and all of a sudden the layoffs start.”At the time of the accident, the fire department said a barrier that keeps water from going into the ship collapsed, leading to a flood. No one was hurt. Godinez said 4 million gallons of water rushed in and hit a 70,000 ton ship. That damage is delaying the next order, leading to the potential layoffs.NASSCO spokesman Dennis DuBard pinned the layoffs to the July 11 incident, and said the company is working to remedy the situation. 10News has since inquired about issues related to the April hiring event. “We are working diligently so not all employees who were notified will be affected. We regret the impact this will have on employees and their families,” DuBard said. “The company has arranged a variety of programs and resources to assist those who will be affected.”Godinez said the union would be working to arrange for additional training for workers who could be laid off, so they can find new jobs.  3023

San Diego (KGTV)- Just weeks ago the Veterans Village of San Diego wasn’t sure they’d have the money to fund their annual Stand Down event. But thanks to generous sponsors, the organization is helping hundreds of homeless veterans this weekend. The three-day event is being held at San Diego High School. More than 700 veterans are expected to participate in the event throughout the weekend. A variety of services is being offered. Some veterans say they are in desperate need of housing, while others tell 10News they are just fighting to keep the roofs they already have over their heads. “I’m minding my own business, next thing I hear knocks on the door ‘hey you can’t park here,’” says Vietnam Veteran Robert Ewing who was given 15 parking tickets for his motor home in the last three months. “That’s why I’m here trying to get rid of these.”Ewing says it has been a struggle trying to find a safe place to park his motor home. Among a variety of services, Homeless Court is being provided at the annual Stand Down event. “The City Council needs to sleep on the streets for a couple of nights and see what the homeless go through. It’s no joke,” says Ewing. For more than three decades, the Veterans Village of San Diego has been putting together this event. It brings in more than 100 organizations to help the homeless. Even though donations were low a few weeks ago, organizers say they were never going to cancel the event. They are just grateful for their donors, so they did not have to scale the event down. 1529
